and that was a while ago im now 14 and looking to get into shooting again.
Do you guys think the ruger SR22 is a good small-caliber handgun?
I know they are light calibers but they can be just as deadly if hit on the right spot on say like a home intruder situation or something like that. and they are cheaper this is why i shoot 357 mag. 38 sp. and 22's. now back to the question is a ruger SR22 a good small cal handgun you think?
@BigDawg0145 I have one, I like it, it's quite reliable if you keep it clean, and don't buy butler creek magazines, they don't fit too well in the SR22, I like the shooters ridge ones better but that was before I found out Ruger makes 25 round magazines and apparantly they're the best, also it's decently accurate but I'm hoping to get it better by removing the barrel support block. but I was hitting a 12'' x 16'' target at 200 yards in high wind with it...10 inch group CCI Stingers
In most cases I'd say the Garand is the more practical choice. But, I just can't deny my love for anything carbine, so there you go! M1A, just because.
@MRcalibrecincuenta Let me clarify... The 308 rifle in the m14 is more powerful as they come in a larger capacity magazine (20 rounds compared to 8) and have the ability to go full automatic (M1 Semi-Auto) only. The round is similar but I do believe 30-06 is a stronger round. M14 is a better choice in a fire fight, but I'll be damned if I like it more than the M1. So I am with you on choice, but I mis-typed on the power output application.
@bluesbrothermike Oh ok i can see where your coming from now. The M1 is one of my favorite rifles of all time, i wish i had one. The only thing i dislike is the price of 30-06. But i might buy one later on and only shoot it once in a while because M1 ammo is quite pricey.
@monsterfreak97 i just got an M! garand for my birthday. it was a very humbling gift, i love it very much. that gun saw action in WWII and Korea, very historic firearm, and still shoots seamless.
@Super47max - good question - since these guns are so similiar I'd say it was more dependent on the shooter and ammo. I know a lot of guys use the Garand for marksmen competition. I found the Garand to be very easy to fire and also very accurate at 100 yards. I'd be interested to see how it does a 200 yards.
It depends on the distance. 600 to 1000yds the Garand SHOULD be better because the 30-06 uses cylindrical powder which burns slower down the barrel which makes it better suited for heavier bullets which are more stable at longer distances. Just my take having owned both rifles and being a handloader.
@Super47max theoretically you can get more accuracy out of the M1 Garand simply because it's chambered for 30-06 instead of .308. You can launch a heavier bullet from the 30-06 at the same speed as a lighter 308 round, and heavier bullet, both being .30 caliber, will have longer ballistic coefficient and bust through wind better.
@bgepp It's fiberglass. The reason they did that is because the M-14 was designed as a selective fire weapon. The original wooden hand guards were scorched from the heat. (Watch any good sustained rapid-fire AK-47 video on Youtube and you'll see their wooden stocks start smoking and catching fire.) Even though the M1a and other civilian makes of M-14 are semi-automatic only, they preserve most of the original's select-fire adaptations. Otherwise, you'd have a Garand in .308.
@GunMaker91 Not really, it was issued in such small numbers that it wasn't that big of an impact. Plus Hitler was dicking around with production that he switched major production to the G43 and then back to the K98 to go back to the G43 at the end. You can find some rare and extremely collectable bolt action rifles that are parts of the G43 and K98 combined to make an abomination of a weapon. It was made because of Russia knocking on the door and they were desperate for weapons.
the italians made somewhat of a cross between the m1 and m14. the name escapes me at the moment but it looks like an m1 but has a 20 round mag and is chambered for .308. you get the best of both worlds with that one
@yvesttt - not with muffs and 8 rounds of 30.06, you actually barely hear it. The legend of the "ping" aiding the enemy is assuming that the little sound can be heard above the din of war. I doubt it was an issue most of the time.
@bgepp I heard the veteran soldiers would throw the empty clip down on the ground (from the M1 Garand) and as the enemy popped up his head they would shoot him in the head. God bless America…
Marie's r actually using them in the middle east right now so what does that say about the m1a. Great gun I own one and it is crazy accurate and has great knock down power
The M1 and the M14 are basically the same. The M14 is just a rechambered, slightly modernized version. The M1 was an excellent battle rifle, but it is obsolete. The M14 took the best parts of the M1 and improved on the weaker parts. For example, the M14 is basically an M1 with a flash suppressor, 20 round magazine, full auto capability, and fires 7.62x51 instead of .30/06
I love firing my Garand because it is literally a piece of history, the M14 has it's fair share of history but nothing like the Garand. Plus, many experts believe it is one of the factors that helped us win WW2
@dougsproblem BS You've never been on the business end of a rifle shot. Yea we do load it in less than a 3 quarter second. The ping is nice, lets your buddies know you're reloading, if they can hear, at least you don't have to yell "out" or "mag" or "up".
@dougsproblem I've heard that the "ping" giving away positions is sort of a WW2 urban legend. Battles are usually so loud, the chances of your enemy hearing a ping are not likely.
@dougsproblem The ping is far too quiet to hear, especially on a soft ground like grass or mud, snow, leaves, ect, even at a few feet away...however the enemy would see the clip pop out occasionally, and would likely wait till the American would come up from cover after reloading...then again his squad mates would cover his reload, the ping was never really a problem, sound wise, unless clearing out houses and such.
The Garand requires more discipline and trigger time to master due to its weight and heavier recoil, but is in several ways superior, not the least of these because of the simplicity of its gas system and brilliantly simple trigger group. The M14 is a fine weapon and the offspring of the Garand, but more complex. The ammunition may be expensive for the Garand, but the Greek M2 ball is good, as is the supply of reloaded brass.
The Garand's trigger group is hardly, "simple" ! Even a neophyte can tell they are much the same, albeit the 14 has the better metallurgy. Personally don't notice the difference in weight between the two, length, Yes ! For certain tho' is the Garand was over-the-top Brilliant for a weapon developed in the '30's, Patton's quote was absolutely correct, the 14 is really an updated version & that's not taking anything away from the 14, either !
@cheeeeezitz To be honest, that is a fallacy. Barely any GI's were killed by the sound. Germans never charged to attack a hiding American just beucase he knew he was empty. Simply becuase, usually, Americans moved in squads O.o The ping is not loud enough to hear in a heavy gunfight, (especially not the direction it came frum), and it takes less time to reload a garand than an M14. If GI's were killed by the ping, it was becuase they weren't in cover when they were reloading.
@SuperSneakySniper Agreed. Anybody who thinks GI's were killed by the ping hasn't tried shooting a lot of rifles off without proper hearing protection. There's no way in hell a solider on the other side is going to hear that in the midst of combat!
@magicapricot Naw they have rags covering thier heads, they can't hear sh!t XD
But no, I use the Garand for range shooting. I don't like the Garand or M1A/M14 for combat. I'd rather use a lighter AR variant. Same accuracy, just lighter. Just at the range, M1 G is mo fun XP (in my opinion)
@SuperSneakySniper The AR does not have the same accuracy as an M1 or M1A. It may be very close at shorter ranges, but as the range increases, the M1 and M1A pull clearly ahead in the accuracy department. Not slamming the AR mind you, as it's an awesome platform, just pointing out one of it's limitations when compared to these classic rifles.
@thesoutherncross100 The M14 wasnt even a famous war gun it was only in the Korean War and the US didnt like it but it's still a marvelous and great gun
@PromoPrime You mean the Vietnam war. The M1 was used in WWII and Korea. The M14 was designed in the late 1950s and introduced into service in 1959, just in time for Nam. I have fired both extensively. If I had to carry one wpn for survival, it would be that indestructible M1 Garand, along with the wonderful bayonet. I love the M14 too, but have seen the flash suppressor collapse like a chef's paper hat and the stock swell so badly you couldn't hit anything with the rifle.
"The M1 Garand is the greatest battle implement ever divised" General George S. Patton Jr.
