The key to fighting the zombies is to take it slow and kill them one at a time. If you just run past them, you're more than likely going to run into even more and the ones you just ran from will catch up, and you'll be surrounded. Also, if your weapons aren't doing much damage, it's probably because their condition is low or they're just weak, low-level weapons. I would advise selling or just dumping some of them; you'll find better ones as you progress.
