  • I quite like this version. The percussion is great! Vocals are like a bucketful of nails though! lol

  • Bollox many classic pogues tunes not featuring Shane are still classics, instrumentals and of course worms

  • damn you spider !

  • it's an interesting take on the song, I like it actually

  • Best Celtic Music Ever (EXcept Dubliners ;) )

  • 37 dislikes? Get to fuck

  • Singer sounds more like a really really REALLY drunk Isaac Brock from Modest Mouse. Don't think it is, but it's what it sounds like.

  • music not bad but rotten singing

  • Anyone know who's doing the vocals for this?

  • @TheBrautigans Andrew Rankin

  • Star of the Count Down is a traditional song, very old in Ireland. First performance I heard was the Chieftans in the 1970s. The Orhtodox Celts are not Irish, they do Irish music (and do it well.)

  • @torporify I don't think Star itself is that old. It was first published in the 1930s. The tune itself is older but it isn't Irish. The English folk song Dives and Lazarus used it too but by far the earliest evidence is from Scotland in the 1700s where the same tune was published as the Scottish folk song Gilderoy!

  • is spider singing this version?

  • @killdog95 Andrew Ranken jumps out from behind the drums to sing this one when they do it live

  • love it, brillant nice sound man , cheers The Makem Folk Singer

  • the instrumentals are rlly good in this version

  • sounds a bit like the pogues, but i bet it is someone else who copies shane mcgowan. specialists to the "front"

  • @friederich66 Why is everyone saying this is not the pogues? Clearly you's know nothing about them, Its from the Pogues album "Look them straight in the eye and say Pogue Mahone". Just because Shane isn't singing doesn't mean it's not the pogues!!! They have other singers too.

  • @parade0000 well, at least i realized that is is not shane. by the way, i hate this kind of "folk"musik, i th ink it´s a crime to play the songs in a way they and especially flogging molly play it. always the same wumpawumpawumpawumpa-sound. one song sounds like the other.

now please do not write a letter of protest (this addresses anyone), ist´s my opinion and a letter wouldn´t change this in any way.

my interest startet in the late sixties with the jonstons and later the dubliners,

  • its bonus song from Hell Ditch...And it is from Pogues

  • @Bohumill2 Is it Joe Strummer?

  • van morison n chieftains

  • its van morrison the chieftains ...not the pogues

  • Ovo je totalno sranje! Orthodox Celts verzija je najbolja!

  • @The60657 Prav si! :)) Браво на сърбите!

  • This song is kickass, I don't know why you assholes who are hating on the pogues, are freaking out

  • Ugly ugly ugly, the Pogues are so ugly... they should really learn how to sing

  • i like the ortodox celts version better.

  • Well, they butchered this song...

  • very very good

  • It IS the f-ing Pogues (from Peace & Love 1999) and no, for godssake, orthodox celts DO NOT sing the original version.

    Morons

  • @JoysOfOi

I'm sorry.. it's the best rendition I've ever heard of the song

  • @JoysOfOi But they DO sing the best version ...

  • Comment removed

  • this is not bthe pogues this is pure shite

  • @lookinwell

im afraid it is the pogues son

  • Comment removed

  • @EverybodyLovesAnto

im afraid it is me auld son

  • @SteeleCurtain411 Its not the Pogues

  • @22grena

Yes it is. Might not be Shane MacGowan singing but it's still The Pogues.

  • @dunstanofgreen Exactly its not Shane MacGowan ergo its not the Pogues.

  • @22grena

Eh? So is every quality song The Pogues have done without Shane's vocals not actually The Pogues? Metropolis is one of the best songs they've ever written and it's an instrumental.

  • @22grena The point I am making is that Shanes voice is the Pogues. So if someone else sings a Pogues song first (and well unlike this track) it is the Pogues. But if someone else sings a Shane sung, then it aint the Pogues. I wonder if Shane had left the band when they sung this version. Im guessing he was gone 'cause its crap.

  • @22grena shane is singing here. just backup though. and this is very much the pogues

  • @prodigynitrogen He had left

  • @22grena wrong

  • @SteeleCurtain411 Yes it is the pogues, we can find a live version (from the brixton academy 2001) on 5CD box set, it's the drummer (Andrew Ranken) on vocals on this and a studio version on remastered edition of "peace & love" (originaly from 1989).

  • @lookinwell wtf, you deaf!?!?!

  • @lookinwell lol it sure is the pogues, I pretty sure this is when they kicked shane for being drunk all the time so the second singer sang through the whole album. Shane joined later again ofc :) Forgive me if I'm wrong

  • @lookinwell im sure this is The Pogues, im just as sure that it isn't Shane MacGowan singing... but a similar version appears on the "Just look them straight in the eye and say.. Poguemahone!!" box set

  • @lookinwell pwned

  • I'm pretty sure it is The Pogues, who else screams like Shane MacGowan?

  • @whatagreatusernam100 its not

  • Um, I don't think this is The Pogues. This sounds nothing like Shane MacGowan remotely.

  • @TroggDoor your right

    its not the pouges

  • 25 fool dislike this song. :)

  • Me mum used to play this on the accordion. This is the first version I've heard that sounds remotely like her rendition. Thanks, boys!

  • @4orkast Orthodox Celts are a Serbian Group who plays Irish Music(and they play it very well). However this song is an old Traditionnal Irish Song retaken by many groups(Dubliners,Irish Rovers,Pogues).

LONG LIVE IRELAND and BE PROUD OF YOUR GREAT CULTURE

    Greetings from Morocco

  • @TheSkyler3000 Instramental wise they are great, I hate when people put them down b/c they are not of Irish decent. I'll admit that I'm ignorant and even a racist Irish kid but that's just ignorant putting their work down, I respect the shit outta them.

  • @TheSkyler3000 thanks. That'll teach me to post when I'm not sure. ah well, thought the celts did a better job. OPINION

  • Great, great song. Thanks for posting!!!!

  • anyone have a link to the Dubliners one?

  • For some reason, the accordian makes me think of pirates...

  • @4orkast

    orthodox celts is the original?

    would you just fuck off

  • @SteeleCurtain411 No need for such reaction, he obviously doesn't know that this song is 100 years old. Cheers.

  • @SteeleCurtain411

I like Orthodox Celts and all but who doesn't realize this is a traditional song (music based on various hymns and songs with words from Cathal McGarvey)? The rhyming scheme is amazing and has the quality to survive generation after generation. In other words the song has reached the status of traditional quality because it can be covered by anyone and still sound fresh as if it were new.

Check my channel for another band I like..

  • @SteeleCurtain411 Nemoj me molim te zasmejavati, ovo je Irska pesma,Orthodox celts su samo obradili istu ... kao i mnoge druge ;)

  • Comment removed

  • @SteeleCurtain411 This version is the ugliest. Gotta admit that. Barley Bree's version is the best.

  • Comment removed

  • @4orkast

The Dubliners song is the original one i think, orthodox celts are from belgrade, serbia and are just making covers mostly...

  • @1The2Thing3 The star of the county down, is an old irish traditional song... I think we would never hear the real one ;=)

  • @1The2Thing3 dubliners? i thought irish rovers?

  • LOL. No. Cathal McGarvey wrote the song and he died in 1927...

  • @4orkast ortodox celts -.- they are not even irish

  • @maarhoefe but they are good.

  • @maarhoefe not even Celtic.

  • @4orkast this song was written in the early 1900s

  • @4orkast retard

  • @4orkast druze haha, ni ovo ni od ortodoxa nije original, to su sve irske nacionalne pjesme

  • @4orkast ahahahahahaha, hilarious! i LOVE the orthodox celts, i've loved them for the past 10 or so years, but they are NOT the original performers of this song, it's an irish folk song. and the pogues recorded it a ong time before the orthodox celts (although my fav version is by the orthodoxs :D)

  • @4orkast dude, orthodox celts was influenced mainly by the pogues.

Both are great but original is original

    cheers from Serbia.

  • @MirLjudima Yes that's the point. Aca Celtic(leader of Orthodox Celts) has said once that The Pogues have had a great influence on Orthodox Celts, but because this song was written by Cathal McGarvey, 1866-1927 we can not say that the Pogues or Dubliners are original.Everybody can sing it and I can say that I like the Orthodox's Celts version the most and you can say that the Pogues are your favorite.... :) So....enjoy,and cheers from Serbia! ;)

  • @4orkast

ortodox celts is a great band but you obviously don't know what is irish traditional music. Star of a Country Down is probably older than your grand grand father.

oh, and i'm serbian and I love ireland. GO CELTS! GO POGUES!

  • @4orkast Ortodox celts isnt the original, but its the best version so far.

  • @4orkast

    are you retarded ?

  • Boys from county Down please help us rejoin and reunite Ireland.

  • @bannanachops I live in Co.Down... Would be nice. But if it ever happens...

  • @cudleycamerondudley yeah hope it does, I tend to get a bit worked up when drunk........

  • Love it!

  • Lol.

Ive only heard the Van Morrison version, this is a funny.

Thumbs up if youre Irish & Roman Catholic, like me.

  • this flaming song gets stuck in your head bad. thank christ they put it as bonus track on the "peace and love" cd. love the pogues. you guys were a part of my mispent youth.

  • BEST. PHOTOSHOP. EVER!!!

  • let me make it clear this is THE POGUES with andrew rankin on vocal hes normally on drums

  • Who is it? One things for sure it ain't Shane McGowan on lead vocals! Is it one they did after he 'left' the band?

  • Comment removed

  • @NakedSamurai5000

I can assure you that it is.

  • @SteeleCurtain411

i has to agree no one that ugly can sound any different...

  • @NakedSamurai5000 you're fucking stupid how the fuck can you confuse shanes drunken voice dumbass

  • Comment removed

  • @NakedSamurai5000 slop is what shane does "a realllyyy really bad day" thats bullshit this isn't sloppy for them sloppy for them would be accidentally playing the wrong tune shane sounds like shit but for some reason i cant stop listening

  • @NakedSamurai5000 its a cover by the pogues. the drummers singing this one.

  • @NakedSamurai5000 It most certainly is the Pogues. Andrew Rankin, the drummer, sings this one. He also " sings " " Worms " from the " Grace..." album.

  • Star of the county down?? I've seen her! <3

  • great band...great song.

  • just found out my name McATEE originates from the county down. TIOCFAIDH AR LA

  • All of you should check out a cover of this song performed by Orthodox Celts, one of the most famous Serbian bands that plays Celtic music. Just write Orthodox Celts Star of the County Down in the search box and enjoy.

    Celtic F.C !

  • got to say, the orthodox celts do a better version. they sing it with pride and heart and soul. these guys sing like they're totally plowed

  • ASYLUM SEEKERS IN IRELAND CAUGHT 'ASYLUM SHOPPING'

243 Asylum seekers were transferred to other EU states after being caught 'asylum shopping' where they looked for refugee status in 2 or more countries.

40 failed asylum seekers were deported last night, a further 202 opted for help in returning home voluntarily rather than being removed.

    source: Irish Independent 12/3/10

and there's no such thing as bogus asylum seekers, they say you are racist for saying so..

  • I think Rapalje's version is better

  • The music for this is excellent

  • this is one of da best versions of this songs..

    atleast magowan fights r side..

up banbridge twn.. we might b small.. but wee r mighty =D

    Éirinn go Brách

    Tiocfaidh ár lá

  • @humminbirdxx MacGowan doesn't sing this, its Andrew Rankin, the drummer,,

  • @RIProrygallagher I thought it was Phil Chevron this whole time! That does explain why it's not quite as melodic as say... Streets of Sorrow or Young Ned of the Hill.

  • @LAHFaust It's Terry Woods who wrote and sings "Streets Of Sorrow" and "Young Ned Of The Hill"... Chevron wrote "Thousands Are Sailing"...

  • @humminbirdxx what does that mean Eirinn go Brach,i heard that in one song by wolfe tones?Im not Irish but i love irish music:)

  • @dydburaz6667 It means "Ireland forever"!

  • Rock on

  • this version sucks!!!!! check out the orthodox celts version its way better

  • Yes Ortodox celts have the best version...:D

    and they are from serbia

  • personally, i like Mary's Lane.

  • redart ? :P

  • @lonz46 No it's not.

  • I was use to Van Morrison singing this; the more I hear the Pogues; the more I like it.

  • they have specific style i like irish rovers version better tough

  • Thats the real piece of music. Great. Five stars. Astrid

  • no mcgowan=no pogues

atleast for me thats how it is

  • @jewishhomie

I am agree with you :)

  • Is this Spider Stacy singing, I think he should just leave it to Shane McGowan

  • Andrew Ranken is singing

  • @JTpoguemahone

thanks, I was wondering for a while

  • was this post magowan then?

  • not yet, but sometimes he let other members sung

  • I've never heard the Pogues before. This is fantastic!

  • this isn't their usual vocalist. try sally maclennane

  • Will do. Thanks much, petercrouch.

  • the pogues playin live are better...dats nat as gud recorded...seen them last year...

  • Best version is the Irish Rovers'

  • Guess everyone who likes this song has their own favorite version; mine is by far Grace Griffith's, wish someone would post it, sigh.

  • this song is one of my earliest memories (along with I'll tell my ma) and the tune has always stuck in my head and the pogues are great

  • Speir rua do the best version I have ever heard of this song!!!

  • Pogues are truly amazing. However, Macgowan does not do the vocals on this version. Those duties go to drummer Andrew " the clobber-er " Ranken". The band has incredible depth both vocally, artistically and technically. And will surely be remembered as one if not the most vital bands of our generation.

  • I think wolfetones do this song the best.

  • my english isn't the best, so please ^^ don't mind ...

its the best song ever ... i love it <3

when i was as young child i played this song on the guitar when i was on tour with the scouts ...

    thank you for upload <3

  • Hiya, your English seems fine to me, good comment about an excellent song.

The Pogues are an amazing band, McGowan gets a lot of stick but you can't fault his amazing singing talent...Patrick.

  • McGowan is great, tho its a pity how he took to the drink as his voice has definately suffered.

  • type Orthodox celts - Star of the county down.I think it is the best version of this song. :) enjoy

  • maybe the singer was spider?

  • The singer is Andrew Ranken

  • Up the Ra from a coutny Down bhoy! Tiocfaidh ar la!

  • ^.^

  • It's Andrew Ranken doing the vocals.

  • the voice on this song is the drummer and im not sure what his name is ....james fearnley i think

  • Its PIRATES SINGING COUNTY DOWN YARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

  • belfast isnt in County Down!

  • Part of Belfast is in County Down as its on my deeds

  • Well if it's on your deeds it has to be so:) I know a house where a man goes to bed in co fermanagh and has breakfast in tyrone next morning. his house is right on the march line between the two counties, straight up, take care friend.

  • unfortunately this sounds very bad...

  • Well its good but kinda scaaress mee :-o

  • a very 'angry' rendition of a good song. scarey like what MurronMyFaveName said

  • May I ask who the vocalist is here?

Sure doesn't sound like Shane and I don't think it's Spider either?

  • i love it when people make songs thier own and shane macgowen always does! love it lad:)

  • sounds nice

  • Hell, this voice is incredible! :D I mean the incredible lack of voice! :D

  • NO, this is the Metallica of Irish traditional music! THIS IS A GREAT BAND! You just have to know what you are hearing!

  • More like the sex pistols of irish music really mate

  • I agree, but like the sex pistols they're supposed to sound like how they sound.

I rather like the pogues and their punk ties.

  • Please never compare the Pogues to either Metallica or the Sex Pistols ever again.

  • @jfranklin1876 dont say that you'll just encourage the drop kick murphies

  • @jfranklin1876

i wouldn't say that this is a compliment
