I'm a Brit and there's lotsa crap talked here about "great" British bands. Well none of 'em are in the same league as The Eagles. Coolest band of all time. So many of their tracks turn out to be "soundtrack to a lifetime" - with some I didn't realise this til years afterwards. Just completely awesome, unforgettable and a US national treasure.
"God knows I was feeling alive...riding with lady luck..." doesn't sound like a song about death to me. It's about leaving your girlfriend's house after a special night of loving, it's all about that special feeling...
Right...the only way it's about death is if he got killed on his way home from leaving his girlfriend's house....says plain as day...headed home after leaving your place... :) Great track and contrary to what others think...I believe The Eagles did the song better than Waits.
Thanks B-girl. Actually this song saved my life during a bad depression I suffered many years ago. I guess I should thank the Eagles as well as Tom Waits!

God I miss my 1958 Bel Air....Graduated in 1965...a Great time to be alive; unlike now.

Bel Airs ruled. What happened to the cool cars? Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against today's cars, but the classics were sooo much better.

This song is about DEATH.
Its the perspective from the Newly Departed at his OWN funeral.
6:00 in the morning gave me no warning,
I had to be on my way.
Stars beging to fade and I lead the parade
Cars are all passing me Trucks are all flashing me, talks about a Funeral Precession.
Kick ass Song!

dcvr999 - is this your interpretation, or has Waits said this himself?
It's certainly an interesting slant on the song.
