Haven't seen it yet, but I've read dozens of reviews and they seem to be mostly 'fair", to a few being "very good", so that's not bad. The general concensus seems to be to ignore comparing it to the great Carpenter classic (one of my favourite movies of all time), and to think of it as a half decent prequel, and then it seems to come off as pretty good.

Its a prequal and you can let these overly critical movie buffs sway you from seeing an amazing movie or you can watch it and enjoy one of the best mainstream horror flics of 2011.

I'm one of those critical people; I wanted to hate it because they didn't use animatronics, and whereas a few parts with CGI was dissapointing, overall it was good and made for way more interaction with the thing than they were able to pull off in the original.
