@elswick1542 Au contraire, mon Ami, this Ship was not planned as a Battle-Cruiser, but as the first "Fast Battleship". A cute Ship, indeed, but not smart enough.
@MegaGojira3000 Designed and laid down as a Battlecruisr always classed as a Battlecruiser.5000t of extra armour and its up to WW1 Battleship standards but not even close to WW2 standards.More than smart enough for 1921 to old 1941
could you please tell me what the songs called and who sings it, thanks. great video, i got HMS Hood as a radio model boat and shes 69 inces long. not been in the water yet, still in build but will be ready for its first sail this summer.
@1badapple1984 The track is called "The battle of the Denmark strait Beatnik turtle" free to down load, cut and past the above to Google it should be the first hit.
@tyke45 Warspite had thicker armour,a fire control system 2 generations of Hood,it also could use a more modern type of shell,Hoods only advantage was speed.
Yes I live about 20 miles North of the Tyne, the name is linked to the ship yard and engineering works at Elswick(Armstrong Whitworth later Vickers Armstrong)and specifically its most famous product the 15" 42 calibre mk1 Naval gun first fitted in the Queen Elizabeth class.
Depends on who,s top 10,my top 10 of battleships would have HMS Warspite at number 1 as its the greatest ship ever launched, discovery channel top 10 puts the QE class at third"Warspite" Hood at 10,but i dont rate it they put Yamato at 2,it was just a floating hotel and then a coffin.
@elswick1542 I believe you are mistaking about the Yamato class it was 1 of only 2 super class BB,s to be built Extremelly tough to sink granted vast over kill was use against both ships. It was clearly the greatest axis BB, to be built and IJN was by far the best axis navy, They were only axis navy able to build carriers, carrier based aircraft and train pilots ( the best in 41, early 42) to operate from carriers, best at night fighting, great heavy cruisers, by far the most aggresive skippers.
robin-yes I got this vid from your chanel-it appears elswick is near my neck of the woods-my dads generation quite a few worked in or had connections to the Elswick works. It is Vickers now and still makes the smaller British tank-the scimitar I think.
When I go back to my home town I pass the factory. It was once the longest single length walk through factory in Europe-over one mile under one roof. Its mostly gone now. -most of the plant is an Insurance company and British Airways call centre
My elder family who were in various armed services in the war reckon they heard that the Luftwaffe could i/d two seperate smoke streams way out over the north sea-and could follow them to the Tyne or the Wear. The Elswick works were targeted but never hit-the rumour was the smoke stream thickened and became v serious pollution over the Tyne -so much -that the bomb aimers could never see any factory or plant long enough for "accuracy" lol
Results of bombing warfare were much overestimated. Aerial views showed lot of smoke, so the analysis gave wrong results. Worst results were achieved by carpet bombing.
BASF Ludwigshafen (IG Farben) never interrupted production, same with all heavy industry all over the Reich. Even Dresden railways and main station was out of order less than 3 days. Highest production of German weapons industry was end of 1944.
Seems some politicians wanted reality to be according to their dreams.
I think the politicians were probably aware of the problems with bombing but chose to ignore them. The RAF worked out the maths invoved in "precision" bombing.
Pick a target and send 1000 bombers on the chance one might hit
It appears in Iraq the US politicians and even the military were sucked into the confidence that precision bombing is possible-and stats show that even today its not really posible
Germans were lucky the allies did not dive bomb watergates of the canals, power plants and all bridges. The lack of food, electricity and other supplies would have caused disaffection, for which the government would have been accused for. The carpet bombing of residential areas only fed the propaganda machine of Herr Goebbels. Churchill was totally wrong because he did not know the mental disposition of the German worker.
The UK did not have a dive bomber with such range- the Hurricane was used for ground attack but the range was limited. The RAF and govt would never think in this way-already investment and technology was in place for big bombers -the idea that "the bomber will always get through"
They were locked onto the destiny that would end in Dresden.
The US copied the Uk mind set, with large bombers, then carpet bombing ,realised it was crap, and their destiny ended in Nagasaki and Hiroshima
A little story: When Hitler saw the ME 262 A first time he said: "This is our new dive bomber" and Oberstleutnant Galland (The man with the burnt face) answered: "Only an idiot like you does not see, this is the best hunter of all times!"
Nothing happened to him.
Galland was C in C of the Luftwaffe after war, he was the first German to fly the new Starfighter.
Germany should have bought the English Electric Lightning-the best interceptor of the 20thC -designed for two things-fast interceptor of USSR planes and then their destruction.
The performance of the Lightning has now only nearly been matched by the F!5 Eagle
The Starfighter was not realy a pure design-and was inately unstable, hence its nickname "widow maker"
Starfighter could carry a nuclear warhead, therefore Franz Josef Strauß purchased it. And the plane was built in Germany (VFW if I remember correctly) so Germany could restart her Aircraft industry soon after war.
150 Starfighters fell from sky.
"What have you to do to get a Starfighter? Buy a piece of land and just wait."
its interesting how many German words and English words are similar when spelled -"witwenmacher" "widow maker" lol What is Cat and water in German? lol
Interesting fact, the Luftwaffe actual ordered a British Interceptor before the Starfighter off the drawing board,it was called the Saunders Roe SR170,performance of the prototype was 1800mph far higher performance than the Lightning, the arse hole Government cancelled it because they preferred missiles.
I think in the 1950s GB still thought they were still a super power but then looked at how much wealth had gone in the war-just had to cut back generally
I also think the British aircraft industry had one huge problem that became almost monstrous after the war-namely the American aircraft industry.-I think they decided they were to build the planes for the west-and almost achieved it by the 1980s. Airbus now offers an alternative ,but long gone and dead is the Trident, VC10,BAC 1-11,Comet,Viscount,Vanguard,Bristol Brittania ,HP Hereld etc etc
The AA call center near the river on the Newcstle buisiness park is built at the exact spot where HMS Invincible the first battlecruiser was launched, the road at the back is called Invincible Drive.

great pics, poor old hood, peerless when launched a great example of being able to outrun what couldn't be outshot. If only she'd met Lutzow or Sharnhorst. After Hood, the RN would loose it's naval leadership.Hoods rivals,Lexington and Akagi would set the trends of the future.Hood,a symbol of past glory.

In a spectacular own goal the drawings of Furious were provided to the IJN,this is why Akagi is so similar as built to Furious,Lex and Sara are amongst my favourites also.
Sharing technology with Japan, and giving them the German Pacific mandates,in hindsight what were they thinking. The USN in the 20's trained for the possibility of fighting both the IJN and the RN.Australia felt a slap on the face as well .
@bv141a Kaga and Akagi were not that ugly. Jap ship design was interesting, good lines, big pagoda mast IJN Hiei one of my favorite due to the fact USS Laffey closed in with it and shot up its upper work. I believe until the Yamatos the Lexington and Saratoga were worlds largest warships.
@jers59 Lex and Sara were superhoods,My personal favorite warships, handsome lines.Compared to the Ijn BC BB conversions, which I beleive to be some of the uglyist vessels ever built. How bizzare it must of seemed in the 20's to have such large warships fitted with such frail aircraft,I think your right, they were the biggest warships afloat till Bismarck?
@bv141a I believe the Lex and Sara were longer then the bismarck and displaced slightly more tonnage then bismarck. Maybe someday the wreck of Lexington will be located?
@bv141a Saratoga in 1945 her elevators were to small not sure about being worn out took couple kamikazes off Iwo but is she was not sunk in the test would have been sold as scrap around 1947 as carrier Ranger was. Not bad ending If you can dive you can still see her

one of my elderly neighbours worked in V-A in the 1960s.
apprentices used to race motorcycles on Scotswood Rd. .
One lad had a Triumph triple cylinder "Trident" -famous for leaking oil onto the back wheel)
With a stop watch he achieved 101mph from a standing start, at the end of the run-lost control at hit a lamp post.
The only thing left recognisable was two pistons and a human tongue.
