i dont think his voice is powerful enough for this song... he either whispers or sings too powerfully and over powers the song itself... its a more powerful and sweet song then that (and he cant really keep a steady pitch)

I think the problem is people get used to hearing a song one way and don't like it any other way. Don't get me wrong I know I do it too. But I actually thought this was really good. Not his best, and I know he changed up the song and stuff but come on. His voice? Beautiful. Haunting. I love it. And he beat Archuleta because while Archuleta is also a great singer he doesn't have the whole preformer package like David does.

Though I'm going to have to agree, the Switchfoot version is better.

AI tends to crank out backstreet boys types. Sure, they can sing, but they're not musicians - their passion and love for music is often questionable. This guy doesn't just sing, extremely well, he can play guitar and he has musical ability. The key to longevity as an artist is having a passion for and knowing music inside and out and getting lucky. Most of the idols haven't made it past the first album because they're not musicians. They're just people who can sing. David Cook is a musician.

it definitely wasn't his best performance, but it wasn't his worst either. he didn't "ruin the song" in any way, like some of you are saying...and this is coming from a big fan of the original.

This is not an impressive performance. I've liked Cook along the way, but wow. I saw Switchfoot less than 2 weeks ago and I was blown away by the song and his voice.

I don't expect Cook to replicate the song, but if he's going to do a song, he should make it his own and blow people away with it, not half-ass it.
