I agree with lefty. Although we can never truly no the motivation for dropping a band name in song, my feeling is that they're simply trying to paint a picture.

From the rest of the lyrics it sounds like a guy having problems communicating with his girlfriend and song "Chicago" brings back good memories. He just wants her to "collapse, tired with joy".

I wouldn't put too much thought into it, sounds like you have a skeptical nature, which isn't necessarily a bad thing in other contexts.

I don't think writing a song that includes a reference to a well-liked song will make your song well-liked. "Hands Open" is a catchy song, but I don't think the name-dropping thing is necessary. It's like those kids at the back of the bus that just list off cool bands they like in the hopes that someone else on the bus will be like "I know of that underground band. You are cool. I will admire you from afar." It doesn't work like that.

i will be honest, i think the name drop was just for content and to make a point, not to make the song well liked, and they didn't drop a song name, just a band name. and does it really matter? it's just a damn good song
