  • Btw the gamekeepers are stropy because you are atracting tourists on to land which is home to many wildlife which are being disturbed by every twat who goes looking bit of an old ww2 B-17!!!

  • i went up and found it, try the co-ordinates 53,35,20'66 N 1,53,29,67W

if they are not exact then you wont be far off, If you start at the summit of wes nab and walk in a straight line down the middle of the moor, you should be able to see blackmoorfoot resovoir easily on your right, STAY MIDDLE BUT A LITTLE BIT RIGHT OF THE MOOR

  • been there. its a windy walk lol

  • Is this up by the catch? I live in Meltham.. But full on do not know how to find it by "it lay within the boundaries of the 'Marsden Moor Estate' ( ? ) and therefore private land , and my original OS map with the wreck's co-ordinates is long gone . But , using the trig' point atop West Nab as your datum stride about 1000 yards NNE , 320d'ish and be alert for a small pile of remains . 53,34'57"n/1,53'43"w , ...maybe. "

  • "Is this up by the catch?"

    I don't know. "catch" ? What / where's that ?

If you are unable to employ co-ordinates, you ought to be able to find it during a good stride about the moor. About the middle, a little nearer to West Nab than the quarry edge overlooking Marsden.

  • Hi, I am a bit of a plane enthusiast and live in Meltham I just wondered if you could give me some directions so I could get some pictures? Thanks in advance

From what I can tell it looks like its near West Nab and the waterfall am i correct?

  • Yes . Collier and Wilkinson in their original book 'Dark Peak Wrecks' of 1979 didn't oblige with map references for the B17 as it lay within the boundaries of the 'Marsden Moor Estate' ( ? ) and therefore private land , and my original OS map with the wreck's co-ordinates is long gone . But , using the trig' point atop West Nab as your datum stride about 1000 yards NNE , 320d'ish and be alert for a small pile of remains . 53,34'57"n/1,53'43"w , ...maybe. Google Earth displays a light patch .

  • cool tho. my comps speakers less so only watched the video but can kinda gather it was windy.. i been looking round some near me, living in yorkshire they is loads of old bases and crash sites to explore..( cause most our bases had the crash master Halifax b)... have u seen the web site derelict places..

  • very intresting video, i recently looked around the crash site of a halifax and found a 8" chunk looks like the cockpit area..may have to have a look myself one day..

  • Aside from the obvious bits such as undercarriage and engine blocks most of the moorland wrecks around here have been pillaged of recognizable parts or you need to be an aero-engineer to put a name to the rest . Glad you found the vid' - despite the wind noise-'very interesting' . Heck !

  • Nobody died in the plane on impact. But unfortunatly 2 died later in hospital from there injuries.

  • According to Collier's book of 1979 'Dark Peak Wrecks' , of the five crew ,three were uninjured and two hospitalised . He mentions only Johnston , the pilot ,dying from his injuries a long time after the event in1961. The other injured person ,Vukelic the navigator , made a full recovery. ( They had both been forward in the plexiglass nose blister at impact ).

  • B-17g 43-37667.709th Bombardment Squadron,447 Bomb group, USAAF.Crashed Meltham Moor April 6th 1945 whilst putting hours on newly fitted engines.

  • Any indication of casualties?

  • i found the crash site whilst running and took a peice home

  • hi mercsport, ermm i was walking over there a 2day, and my step dad told me about the plane.. i told him i would try to find the location, could reply to this please.. or hav you got an email?

  • O.K. , will p.m. you .

  • thanks, working on a site of intentionally burried P-38s, B-24s, 25s encouraged by condition of your B-17

  • Pleased that you found it of use . I don't recall finding any engine blocks at this crash site . Buried ? The nearest road is nearly a mile away . There are a lot of wrecks on the moors about here .

  • Thanks for your comments . Sorry you found it such a disappointment - as so much stuff is on You Tube - even I find it a bore on playback . I'm slightly amazed you found it at all . And yes , must look into how to muffle the sound in wind .

After watching your vid. about the Porsche , your note to me - " Please post something worthwhile " - is a bit bloody rich !

  • Ignore him mate. At least you made the effort to get out there, which I appreciate, and not film some boring old car in a warm garage. Why criticise anyway? You're not claiming to film producer of the year are you? Criticisms would be better directed at those who post tasteless videos and those videos that encourage youngsters to peform stupid and dangerous acts. Nobody made him watch it. Cheers mate.

  • Thanks for the moral support Biffo . I suspect 07FJC , after enduring the stupefying boredom of my little vid., was only trying to be helpful . Too late now but I have in fact only just discovered a way of editing 'in-phone' before download . As my school reports always used to say " ..can do better ! ". Cheers .
