This should've been the big hit from "Door To Door". Clearly better than that lame "You Are The Girl" song. I bet it would've gone Top 10 or higher had Ric, Ben & co released it as the first single off the album. Instead they waited to release it as the 2nd single off "D2D". This is clearly the standout track off the album. Too bad Top 40 snubbed it. Went to #4 on the AOR charts but after it expired off the charts AOR stopped playing it altogether. SAD!
Is Elliot playing the guitar or is the guitar playing him? Only a man who has complete control of this instrument responds to his own lead riffs the way he does. It's a pleasure to see such a performance. He does it every time in every video. I like when he's finished with a solo, he'll return to the chords with a solid strum, looking away from the guitar. Like it's a afterthought. As he says, his guitar style is played with "economy." Perfect term.
incredible! i just can't believe that they didn't make it on the list of greatest artists of all time VH1 special........... and BEYONCE WAS???????????????? something is seriously wrong with that picture!!!!!!!!!!! anyone else agree?? please, someone????/
@mediterraneanqueen Totally agree with you. It feels like the population is in some kind of coma. Follow the leader-whatever they feed to them they like. I am not saying that Beyonce isnt good, because I think she is one of the few who is talented, but your right-give it some time before you label anyone a greatest artist of all time.
The Cars should have been on that list and definitely in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
God willing they will be in soon; their new album is very good.
He is NOT wearing a shirt under that vest. I have looked at that myself and thought "Ben doesn't look like he has any chest hair". I have always liked men with no chest hair or very little.
My comment about Jeans, T-Shirt, & Blk Leather is how the girl looks.
I love to where those colors, to this day. My home is decorated in blue denim color, black furniture, and white accents. They say you should decorate your home with colors you love. Blessings-

The album Door" to "Door was a "Great one!! It "Kinda went back to the early years of the Cars.It had more of a "Rock and Roll sound to it instead of the "Techno vibe of the albums that preceded this one. "Great stuff! Thanks for posting this " Vid.
As much as I love the cars, I don't think I had ever seen this video before? The fabulously talented Elliot, outrageously sexy Ben, the quirky Ric. He always fascinated me for some reason, WHERE does he come up with his lyrics? So cool! I pity anyone who didn't grow up in the 80's and grow up with this band. So talented and so underated!
@flybug67 I think all of Elliot Eastons solo riffs are Extra Hot, but I think his solo on "Tonight She Comes" has got to be the most innovative rocker spot, ever! The Cars Rock It Hard!

I never knew that they did a video for this song. This album was not a commercial success, which is probably why it led to their breakup and solo careers, but it is interesting to see. Weird fact - on door to door, two songs were pulled from their first song writting sessions in 1977 when they wrote their first album. Double Trouble was one of those songs, I think this is the other (and explains the heavy guitar use - a throwback to their first album).
@dudefromtherock I agree! My 6 year old son is a huge Beatles fan and I just downloaded The Cars "Sad Song" single coming out on their new 2011 album and he is now hooked and wants me to get the The Cars entire library. Yes son, whatever makes you happy. I know it will make me happy when I get it. I know it will be worth it. Children and music they grow up with is priceless. I'm in dream land to think that children can be so easily influenced my music recorded over 30 to 40 years ago.
What a cool vid, although I have loved this song since it came out I have never seen the vid, one of those ones that fell between the cracks I guess. I like this song mainly because it sounds more guitar driven like their earlier stuff.
@Boblobblaw88 He's playing the Kramer EE model (yup, named for him), which wasn't very successful... if you check out the Rolling Stones' "Mixed Emotions" video, Mick Jagger plays one.
Agreed, awesome guitar riffs. This while album was awesome... but it didn't sell and was overlooked (by Whitesnake and other very heavy acts back then).
I have been waiting forever and a day for The Cars to release a DVD of their official Music Videos. It'd be fun to see all the behind the scenes making of them. Recently, a Live DVD/CD is available of past performances called The Cars Unlocked.
This is an interesting video, somehow feels isolated. The girl in the purple dress running looks as though she could seriously be my twin, or double... gosh.
Though critically panned by the press...I think door to door was a great album. With this song and the beautiful Coming Up You on the playlist, it is well received by all whom I have shared it with. The Cars are, to me, were the best part of the 80's music. Thanks guys.....and rest in peace Ben. You brought joy to many in you short life...
If you listen to some of their interviews, Ocasek and Orr recorded all of their songs using both of their voices and then they decided during editing and finalizing the album who they would go with. The Cars were taken by surprise that Strap Me hit the charts like it did. They were concerned about slow sales of the album and of course the critics remarks at the time when the band finally called it quits.
Why is Ric always seen the most in the videos? Just a few shots of the other guys, and are they standing in order of importance? I think Ben was the leadman.
I honestly swear I have played this song weekly over the decades...thats 1000 times and I never got sick of it and deeply enjoy it...ive played in the shower...in the car ...lifting weights jogging with my "walkman" tape player...thankyou!
ithankyou!...i like many cars songs...rick songs...benjamin songs...but I think I love this song the very best! (outstanding sexy video) I play this song thousands of times and still love since day 1...(1986 or 87?) just yesterday to me I'm 45! /@ milwaukee
@rocketshipstud6 You know this whole album never got the credit or attention it deserved. How many life experiences can you remember while you were listening to this song? One listen to this song and I take a time machine back from 44 to 21in 2 secs flat.
@dudefromtherock you know why, this album came out during the hair band days, you know, warrant, poison, etc, this great album never had a chance, i never even saw this video on mtv at the time
@jinfanger The greatest gift you can give your child is a influence in music...good music, music that will be heard 20, 30, 40 years from now. Music like this and not the disposable crap of today like Britney Spears and Lady GaGa. To quote David Lee Roth "here today, gone later today".
@dudefromtherock I agree! My 6 year old son is a huge Beatles fan and I just downloaded The Cars "Sad Song" single coming out on their new 2011 album and he is now hooked and wants me to get the The Cars entire library. @dudefromtherock The problem was when this song was released it was right in the middle of the hair band days, BON JOVI, POISON, and DEF LEPPARD were topping the charts, plus at this time U2 released there big album THE JOSHUA TREE, SO THE CARS ALBUM DOOR TO DOOR never had a chance
WOW, I never knew they made a video to this song. This was a really good album. These were the days...... Glad I was around for them !!! Saw them live in Dallas on this tour.
Damn...was it that long ago? Was driving down Queen St. E in Toronto when I had this in the tape player of my 83 Honda Civic, blasing it for all it was worth. Good times...
These guys really need to release a greatest hits DVD already. Classic videos like this as well as many of their others would be so awesome to own in one's personal video library. I love the footage of the Mojave Desert in the background. Something about using the isolation of the desert to add impact to the words of a song just never seems to get old. Thanks for posting this timeless classic of a video.
@Wheeljack35 I totally agree, they need to make a DVD where this is a tribute to Ben Orr and the pancreatic foundation, just like they did with the 1979 Cars live album
Yes a DVD of all the cars music videos would be great. it seems something like this came on VHS way back in the time when Heartbeat City came out. it was a small collection of their videos from that album plus some inserts from Shake it up and Panorama. That alone would be worth getting even if it is via ebay. From what i understand, it went out of print a while ago unless there is a copy on sale somwwhere.
This is a much better song than I remember it seeming to be back when it was released second from this album, at the time I thought Double Trouble or Coming up You would have garnered more chart attention. This video is also quite a departure from what they usually had done. Were any other videos done after this one?
A Great song from a brilliant group from the 70's & 80's and what I missed out on in terms of brilliant music. Well least I found it!! I like Ric Ocasek on this record like many! (great voice) RIP Benjamin Orr.
Ric Ocasek has this unique "ugly" cool about him. Only the lead singer of The Cars could pull it off.

Of all the bands from the '70's/'80's, I miss the Cars the most! One of the truly underrated bands of all time..

I would love to see all their videos on DVD too

@Wheeljack35 I totally agree, they need to make a DVD where this is a tribute to Ben Orr and the pancreatic foundation, just like they did with the 1979 Cars live album

Yes a DVD of all the cars music videos would be great. it seems something like this came on VHS way back in the time when Heartbeat City came out. it was a small collection of their videos from that album plus some inserts from Shake it up and Panorama. That alone would be worth getting even if it is via ebay. From what i understand, it went out of print a while ago unless there is a copy on sale somwwhere.

@dressshoeguy This was after the Heartbeat City VHS.

This is a much better song than I remember it seeming to be back when it was released second from this album, at the time I thought Double Trouble or Coming up You would have garnered more chart attention. This video is also quite a departure from what they usually had done. Were any other videos done after this one?

Paulina was a popular model back then, so they both had cash. Rick was a really unique man and artist.

A Great song from a brilliant group from the 70's & 80's and what I missed out on in terms of brilliant music. Well least I found it!! I like Ric Ocasek on this record like many! (great voice) RIP Benjamin Orr.

This song is great. Period. I think it may be one of their best. So, what's new is old...What's old, is strikingly New...*
