I agree that Vodoun in west Africa is quite old and predates the religions of Ibrihim, recent finds in Archaeological sites have found objects, emblems, and symbols that are very much like modern day Congolese objects, emblems, and symbols. I just have to add that I don't think Judaism, Buddhism or Hinduism has done anything to try to squash Voodoo or any other religion in the world. It is not the way of those religions. I could be wrong...but I doubt it.

Hinduism is not older then any indigenous African religion, which includes the Kemetic religions of ancient Egypt (Isis and Osiris). The 'Aryans" were not Europeans. They were the ancestors of the present day Persians/Iranians. The Vedas and the foundation of what came to be known as "Hinduism" was already there having been established by the Dravidians and Ethiopians. It was later Ayranized by the Persians. Vodoun and other African religions are NOT shamanistic. That is a western myth.

Hinduism is reported to be around 5 - 10,000 years old. Scientists are even considering an "out of India theory" which seems more plausible then the "out of Africa theory". The reason is they can trace almost all human languages, religions and philosophies to the Indian sub-continent. India is also located in a position were people could spread out all over the world (Australia, East Asia, Americas etc.) All shades of skin tones also can be found in India.

I am well educated in Anthropology, Archaelology, and I have a minor in World Religion. India's location is exactly what makes YOUR out of India theory implausible. It's very location is what protected it from invasion and cultural interactions with other peoples for thousands of years. Grow up !

On what basis is Vodoun deemed to be "the oldest religion"? And if it was, what does that prove? My understanding, just off the top of my head, is that it's a mixture of West African spiritual beliefs and practices and the Christianity the African slaves encountered under slavery (and after slavery) in Haiti.

The Vodoun religion of West Africa has no Christianity mixture in it. It pre-dates Christianity as all other ancienr religions do. I don't think the statement that it is the oldest religion is trying to "prove" anything. It just is what it is.

Have you read the Wiki article on this? The info corrected my blurring of African & Haitian vodoun so I think it served its purpose. I don't really have the time or the inclination to do further research at the moment. I've also read Maya Deren's classic study on the subject "Divine Horsemen".
