Great playing my friend. I just got a MC58 this past weekend and can't put it down! I am playing mine through a Fender Deluxe III using the gain channel or on the clean using a Zendrive. Both sound great. I also play it through a MESA Express and it sounds great on that too. I also have a Smokeburst McCarty I got in 2009 and those were the first with the 57/08's and I have loved those ever since but on the mc58 the 57/08's sound incredable coiltapped clean. Great playing again:-)
@nahs1988 Read your comments on the MC58 and thought I have to share with you that you're spot on in all your comments! The PRS MC58 truly is a great instrument, and when paired with the equipment you mentioned, it becomes infinitely better:) Have a great 2012!
@ThiagoPug Thx mate =) In this video I'm going through a Leqtique (Shun Nokina) OD - Ibanez TSA15W head - Marshall 1936 2x12 with G12h-75's - Miced into Logic with a Senheiser MD421 (very low volume on recording, 5W mode, 9 o clock)
@JamieMoggridge The McCarty '58 has the new 57/08 pickups, new bird inlays, a bound neck, different pattern neck profile, and (I think) slightly larger frets.
@fretdance So why does that double the price of a standard McCarty?!! Anyway, im interested in buying a standard one, but what are the pickups like? i know they're 57/08's or 09's, but are they really much better?
@JamieMoggridge Well, the '58 I have are significantly lighter and more resonant than any previous McCarty I've tried, not that I know if this is generic to the new series. I think that the new laquer, pickups, birds and what not is the reason for the higher price tag. It is overall more "exclusive" than the previous incarnations. The 57/08's are PRS take on the classic PAF of the late 50's. They are VERY open and clear sounding, and has the best "split" tones I've heard out of a Humbucker yet.
@JamieMoggridge I wouldn't say that... They are less "PAF-sounding" with a bit less clarity and "openess" to them. Not bad at all, just depends on what you're after. I woudl say that the old McCarty's and Dragon pickups are better for heavier Rock-type stuff, whilst the 57/08 are clearly the ticket for more open "woodier" tones
@fretdance What is the "PAF" sound ? I've herard so many people talk about it, but yeah im into blues and some clean playing and rock and stuff, so you reckon the mccarty pickups and the dragon pickups could handle that?
@JamieMoggridge Well, imo a real "PAF" sound is characterized by an almost single coil'ish openness and string separation, but with more warmth and punch. With a pickup like the 57/08's you would have a pickup that is not super hi-gain for modern metal, but that would stay tight and defined at very hi gain settings, but might not be able to distort into that almost "liquid" lead-tone. For what you describe, I think the 57/08 would be a far superior choice to the Dragons, given a mahogny body.
@JamieMoggridge Yeah, that's true. Unfortunately PRS still don't sell the 57/08's in their US webshop, but I have seen the occasional 57/08-set of hums stripped from a PRS and sold off separately at around 500USD. My best tip would be to check Ebay every other day, and when a set pops up, be ready to buy =) Most selers seem to only ship within US though, so you might need a contact over there to help you out. But who knows, maybe the PRS shop will sell them soon enough.
@fretdance 500USD for a pair of pickups?!!! That's an outrage, even for them! Surely you can't charge that much for them, are they made of diamonds and gold or something?!! That's ridiculous!
@JamieMoggridge yeah, it's not cheap man =) But, considering a set of Tom Holmes PAF will set you back upwards of 1000USD lol, now THAT's ridiculous :D
@fretdance Wow...ahaha, yes it is! But nonetheless thank-you for your help, you've been very useful, and i've enjoyed your playing, an extremely tasteful player, cheers! :)
@JamieMoggridge The 57/09's are slightly hotter in output, and does nto come on the McCarty's, but I think on the Modern Eagle, and perhaps some other model. The 57/08's are the best PRS Humbucker pickups yet (imo). However, ultimately you should try to find a older McCarty model and A/B-test for yourself if possible, might be that you actually prefer the older model, depends on what style of music you play, and personal preference of course.
@fyrison Thx mate =) In this video I'm going through a OD - Ibanez TSA15W head - Marshall 1936 2x12 - Miced into Logic (very low volume on recording, 5W mode, 9 o clock)
@fyrison Yeah that's correct, separate OD-pedal in front, thought the built in TS (like all standard TS-circuits) cut too much low and high-end. As for the volume on a head like this, it is very dependent on what cab you use. The 1x12 cab that comes with it doesn't really hold up too well, nto enough headroom left for leads I think. However, if you run the head through say a 2x12 of a 100W or more, no problem!
@fretdance I'm good mate, things are going alright for me. Been enjoying all your product demo's. It's always best when someone who can really play tests products out, shows what they can do. Might start saving for a PRS, have wanted one for years, you any idea how the SE models are ?.
@DannyBoy777 heh, bro, then YOU should be doing these demos! =) The SE-models have gotten progressively better over the years, and the new PRS SE SB Singlecut is really, really good!! They are often very light and resonant, and with decent pickups. And since you can if you want get the 57/08 pickups separately from a dealer, that model is a no-brainer for a budget-priced PRS. I'm thinking of getting onefor those "hardcore" gigs up in the Swedish alps where I don't wanna risk damaging this one =)
@DannyBoy777 I would say far better than Highway, on par with the Japanese Brands such as ESP/Edwards/Ibanez in the singlecut, fixed tail-genre. It is more fair to compare with those than a Fender I would say. it has a different tone than them though, thx I guess both to the scale length, construction and pickups
@DannyBoy777 You get what you pay for of course, but they are good bang for the buck no doubt. But of course at they don't compare with a PRS at 10 times the price tag. However, more and more brands come out with quality lower priced stuff, where I guess Ibanez lead the way. Suhr's new line of Rasmus seems the same, good quality for the price and with the SUhr "feel" there.
@SeanWiseMusic Thx Sean, action is pretty slick on this one atm, perhaps around 2mm at the 12th fret. Usually go for 0.11-50 on my guitars, but so far I've stuck with 0.10 on this one. Will revert back to 0.11 again this week, find this setup a little too "slinky" for my generally heavy hands =)
I have a DGT but this sounds similar
Superb playing, really superb playing.

Nice demo bro. How do you think this 245 would handle heavy rock? I used to own a 2000 McCarty and miss it.

OD - Ibby TS head, does that mean that you have an OD in front of the amp, not using the built in tubescreamer circuit?
Oh, and how does that amp hold up for louder playing, band practice, gigs etc?
