I was living at Park Tower, seen on the left side of the video, back when the Mapes came down. I was out on the balcony near the top to watch this implosion that cold Sunday Super Bowl morning.
yeah i remember that morning it was cold as hell. I was on the center st bridge and we got surrounded pretty fast by the dust cloud but the people who were in the cal-neva parking garage got nailed the worst (which is funny because we got kicked out of there for not have VIP badges LOL) Wow i dodn't know park lane was gone now i moved out of the area august 2000
They could have renovated the Mapes and made it the way it once was. It would be such a historical gem. Once a friend and I snuck into the FIB building and went way up to one of the top floor restroom windows so we could look down into the skyroom and imagine what it was like back in the day. I was def not cheering when they tore this down. I was standing next to the courthouse.
You miss Park Lane Mall? What happened to it? I moved out of Reno in 2007. If it was demolished what did they put in its place? I remember the food court, the music store and the slot car shop.
@SagebrushRebel It was demolished to put in a new mall, I believe. But because of how the economy went to hell, that never happened. Now, there's an ugly blank lot with fencing around it.
The Mapes was definitely a part of my life. I spent a lot of fun times there. It wasn't just the building that was historic, it was the people and "things" that it represented. It sat vacant for a very long time (14 years, I believe) during which I would frequently stop by and do a walk-around to pay my respects. I was about 1,000 feet away when the impolsion took her down.. a lump in my throat. I have a brick and about 30 marquee light bulbs I swiped a few years earlier for keepsakes.
Nobody knows the true story of why this Beautiful Hotel was imploded except for just a few of us. There are many who still live in the city of Reno that say I was the one which caused this, maybe they are right...

The way this town destroys it's own history is fucking idiotic. I miss Park Lane, spending Sundays there with my brother and his soon to be wife.

It was demolished sometime in 08, all that's been there is an empty lot. I guess they're building stuff in it now.

Wow, I didn't know Park Lane Mall was gone. I moved out of Reno in 1999. Wow, some things have changed.

This was the most sad and horrible day in Reno's History! Nobody knew her (The Grand Old Lady) like I did...

Why was it Demolished

The owners had to file chapter 7 bankruptcy.
They opened up a new hotel called Money Tree.
And simply did not have the funds to sustain the Mapes.
The newer casinos kind of took over.
Now the space where it was torn down is an Amphatheater, Restaurant & Ice Rink aka Rink On The River.
