Actually i believe it for the most part had to do with slavery. The North didn't capitalize on slavery because it couldn't. The mason-Dixon line was a vitamin D line. Of course they didn't know about vitamin D or anything about that kind of stuff, but they did know that blacks were more susceptible to disease above that longitude and latitude.
