I prefer the version he (Derek Trucks) played when he was a kid in 1993 . I liked the tone of his guitar back then, and his style. His new Qawwali inspired style is still awesome, I just really liked the rawness of his tone from back then and the emotion that he conveyed back then.
@BMitch628 Easy there kid. It was a joke... i just dont understand why he would use a pcik for this tune.. it needs more of groovy bass line that you get with your fingers... do you play bass? doubtful... so understand that it was a joke and calm yourself
@Guitarman0081 Clapton is God? Psht...even he knows Derek is the greatest of all-time by miles. Derek is God, Clapton cowers in the light of his divine playing skill.
WOW!!! i wish i was there to witness this. great video! thanks for posting! Derek is amazing. the sounds he gets out of his Gibson are out of this world!
AGREED on comments about Derek! Warren is our Clapton (Cream) incarnate. But Derek is operating on a different planet than any Jazz,Blues,Country, and Rock, guitarist on EARTH. His poise, and focus combined with the training he has received, enables him to channel the "Force" or "Energy" that infuses all music. not just this song but all his performances!
the really sad part is clapton coulda played the same guitar that he recorded this song on, if only he hadn't sold the damn thing at auction.
I know when I heard this was going to happen, since it couldn't be Duane and Eric I just wanted it to be Gold Top and Brownie Strat back together again.
@DigAPony69 A little bit of trivia for you - besides the fact that it's not Whitlock on piano - Whitlock also did NOT play the piano part in the original studio version. It was the song's co-writer and drummer - Jim Gordon who played the piano part at the end.
How the hell did Kurt Kobain, Kirk Hammett, Jack White, and of all people the fucking dudes from Radiohead beat Derek on they're list. Derek blows all those dudes out of the water. Fuck Rolling Stone and they're gay ass list.
Dickey Betts was and is an integral part of the Brothers sucess."Blue Sky and Liz Reed "are classics. I am unaware of any problems between Dickey and Jack.Check out Duanes Stonybrook Bluesky solo. WOW
Although i'll never forgive Greg and asshole Butch for ousting Dickey out of the group, I cant bash Derek any longer. Derek unlike his uncle is truly one gifted player, who plays the lead straight up (without overlayers of guitars) and knocked a grandslam. The brothers lineup of guitar players are truly some of the finest players ever. Thank you,Duane ,Dickey ,Dan Toler,Warren,Derek and Jack Pearson ,who might be better than all of them. Check out Jack Pearsons Bluesky solo.
@skydogging Do you blame Dickey for basically forcing Jack out of the band over something as petty as the arrangement of the amps on stage, to accomodate Jack's hearing problems?
@tormentor91 Sure he can play it better. But that is one of the classic solos in all of rock music. IMO he does Duane the greatest justice possible by staying close to the original while adding his own subtle improvisations.
@mpre53 well i would say he's mostly improvising and quoting the original solo sometimes, but one of the things, that made duane allmans solo so amazing was that he was playing notes that "weren't on the instrument" (Tom Dowd), and that's what derek trucks could have tried too, at least sometimes.
I'm sorry to be contrary, and Derek does play the signature riff during the vocals better than anyone could ask for, but I stopped attending ABB concerts because I find Derek's attack harshly aggressive. I'm afraid he's unfamiliar the the term "dolce".
Gotta totally disagree with you here. Derek does not always play fast & aggressive, nor slow & sweet (yes, I know what "dolce" means). His range is absolutely vast. Someone described a Derek solo as sounding like a battle between heaven and hell.
You may want to try him again, I'm not sure I've ever seen his equal and I've seen many inlcuding SRV, McGlaughlin, Carlos, DiMeaola, Beck, Page, Trey, and of course, Dickey.
You know, I have put a bit of faith into believing that Derek's solo can bring sight to the blind. I even think it beats Clapton's. Don't get me wrong, Clapton is a genius when it comes to music. His lyrics are incredible. But Derek is amazing. And that's the only way to describe it in words.
@Obiwannabe On the slide solo or the rock part? If it's the slide, on the Layla track you can barely hear Duane playing on the slide. Eric covers him up. The rock part, I don't know, it sounds fine to me.
I am just wondering why Clapton did not use Gibson ES335 in this rendition as everything else I suppose was meant to be like in original version from "Layla and other..." album.
@dread007 he didn't use a ES 335 on the Layla album, he used his first strat 'Brownie'. He made the big change from Gibson to Fender whilst with Blind Faith opting for a telecaster alongside his 335 and firebird.
Open E is what he usually plays in. I don't think it is the standard. But I barely know anything about guitar besides the basics :P. But what I do know is Derek Trucks is truly the most talented person I've ever heard on slide.
I love Derek's playing....until he gets too much into that mid eastern thing he does ...it just goes into somekind of uud ...thing ...that drives me nuts ..fantastic player ...that is what makes him unique ...I wish he would just stay melodic and bluesy without that ...jerky thing he does ...Clapton sounds great and Warren is one of the baddest players on the planet ..and I mean that in a good way !!!....
The sound is a bit odd....lacking reverb or??? ...anyways thanks for posting... the lineup i think we all dream about xD...except Duane is missing off course
The torch is being passed. Eric to Derek. The two finest guitar players alive. Warren is right up there. Thanks for posting these wonderful video's Hopefully a full DVD will follow.
