Wow,"white man & Asian woman" commericals were even made back 40 years ago(I've been seeing some only during the last 7-8 years in the State I live in).
Wow! The original and best! Though the tune is essentially a variation on "Scotland the Brave," it stuck in my head the first time I saw this ad and it became one of my favorite whistling tunes. I still use Old Spice, too!
Are you sure this is from 1971? That kid's hair looks awfully long for a "nerd" at that time, and his lapels are late-70s wide. Besides, my college friends made a spoof of that commercial in 1979 and it was still running on TV at that time. Looks more like 1978 to me.
This spot is actually dated incorrectly..it was shot around 1973, 1974. My dad, Burt Blum, shot it in SF and it's Brett Halsey NOT John Bennett Perry. It was originally just a test commercial, but tested through the roof, so they ran it.
This is my Uncle Mortimore- just kidding. I saw an interview with Matt Perry years ago and his father was in the audience, still looking great. They even played the commercial so there is no confusion. Great genes in that family.
"Hello ladies look at this commercial, now back here now back to the commercial, now back here. does your guy look like this? I should hope not. Should he use old spice to give you that musty scent to lure you back to his home? Maybe he should. Look left now right now back to the commercial. He got the girl.
In college thirty years ago a girl asked me what cologne I wore. I said "Old Spice". She said that is what her father wore. I stopped using then. Is now okay?
@davidh0187dc Um, excuse me "genius". I'm pretty sure everyone here already knew that little tidbit of knowledge. His name is John Perry & everybody can tell he's Matthew's father cuz they look so much alike. So the grand prize goes to u for pointing out the obvious. Think before u type next time, ok?
There is a scene in a Simpsons cartoon where Homer and Lisa break into a museum to see an Egyptian exhibit. There is an object that Homer knocks down and it plays a little song. As they leave the museum Homer tells Lisa "I will never foget that tune" and he starts to whistle. Lisa tells Homer; "Dad, that's the Old Spice tune."
Kind of funny but this commercial could be taken one of two ways. Either the young man is amazed by the scent and wants to attract women as the bigger guy does OR he has the hots for the bigger guy and is in love with everything about him, including his scent.
@chrisman737 That's rather perceptive. Kind of like "are the lyrics get us out from under Wonder Woman" or "get us out from under, Wonder Woman"? Or does the lyric "The sweetest thing I've ever known is loving you" mean "I treasure having loved you very much" or "my girlfriend, who is the SWEETEST thing, is ALSO loving you"?
My daily uniform is my favorite cardigan my hush puppy shoes and good splash of Old Spice! Don't run with the pack young men, be an individual. Sure some may laugh but there's envy in that laughter because you're a real man and you don't give a damn what the world thinks about it!!!!
old spice USED to make all types of colognes in bottles in GLASS bottles anyone remember that??? they had musk sent and a fresh sent some were blue colored i think they stopped making them? i know now they make the classic cologne in plastic containers
You kids today with your fancy cell phones and motor bikes don't know what your missing. Old Spice beats the hell out of your Drakkar noir and polo crap. Now get off my couch and get a damn job!!!
The narrator is Allen Swift, veteran New York voice-over actor and announcer...the "Old Spice" jingle goes all the way back to the mid-'50s {"'Old Spice means quality', said the Captain to the Bosun/So look for the package with the ship that sails the ocean!"}.
hey kid.. take this bottle of loud smelling after shave and stop stalking me !!! I remember this one too, and hey Old Spice even use that whistle tune in some the ads for their products today.
I vaguely remember a Panamanian Old Spice commercial. It was a crew in a ship battleling a storm. It had a similar music theme as this one. I saw it in 1974. I calculated this date by figuring out where I was living at the time and since it was a short stay here, i had an accurate year. I was 3 y/o at the time.
I too. I'm panamenian people. (mi inglés no es muy bueno... sorry) I remember that comercial you mind. But it was in spanish in the end when the loc in off talk. I was 4 o 5. I saw it in RPC Canal 4 in 70's. What a times!
Woah! This is from 1971? I saw the new commercials from Old Spice and instantly fell in love with the whistle at the end that they used in this commercial. I love when they bring back old things for new commercials. ^.^
I'm not sure since there's no citation, but the Old Spice Sailor in the commercial could be John B. Perry, Matthew Perry's (from Friends, Studio 60, etc.) Father. I heard and interview with Matthew Perry (and read an article) where he said his Dad was the Old Spice Sailor in all the print and TV commercials in the 70's
Yes indeed, that's Matthew Perry's father. Matthew most recently spoke publicly about this in a 4/29/07 interview on NPR's "Fresh Air" with Terry Gross, while promoting his new movie "Numb." He said (jokingly) that most of his troubles began because his father was the "handsomest man on the planet."
LOL. Reminds me of what the executive told Kramer in the Sienfeld episode about 'the beach' cologne: That's why people take a shower when they return from the sea - it's an OFFENSIVE odor.
