Wow! The original and best! Though the tune is essentially a variation on "Scotland the Brave," it stuck in my head the first time I saw this ad and it became one of my favorite whistling tunes. I still use Old Spice, too!

Are you sure this is from 1971? That kid's hair looks awfully long for a "nerd" at that time, and his lapels are late-70s wide. Besides, my college friends made a spoof of that commercial in 1979 and it was still running on TV at that time. Looks more like 1978 to me.

This spot is actually dated incorrectly..it was shot around 1973, 1974. My dad, Burt Blum, shot it in SF and it's Brett Halsey NOT John Bennett Perry. It was originally just a test commercial, but tested through the roof, so they ran it.

This is my Uncle Mortimore- just kidding. I saw an interview with Matt Perry years ago and his father was in the audience, still looking great. They even played the commercial so there is no confusion. Great genes in that family.

There is a scene in a Simpsons cartoon where Homer and Lisa break into a museum to see an Egyptian exhibit. There is an object that Homer knocks down and it plays a little song. As they leave the museum Homer tells Lisa "I will never foget that tune" and he starts to whistle. Lisa tells Homer; "Dad, that's the Old Spice tune."

Kind of funny but this commercial could be taken one of two ways. Either the young man is amazed by the scent and wants to attract women as the bigger guy does  OR he has the hots for the bigger guy and is in love with everything about him, including his scent.

I vaguely remember a Panamanian Old Spice commercial. It was a crew in a ship battleling a storm. It had a similar music theme as this one. I saw it in 1974. I calculated this date by figuring out where I was living at the time and since it was a short stay here, i had an accurate year. I was 3 y/o at the time.

I'm not sure since there's no citation, but the Old Spice Sailor in the commercial could be John B. Perry, Matthew Perry's (from Friends, Studio 60, etc.) Father. I heard and interview with Matthew Perry (and read an article) where he said his Dad was the Old Spice Sailor in all the print and TV commercials in the 70's

Yes indeed, that's Matthew Perry's father. Matthew most recently spoke publicly about this in a 4/29/07 interview on NPR's "Fresh Air" with Terry Gross, while promoting his new movie "Numb." He said (jokingly) that most of his troubles began because his father was the "handsomest man on the planet."
