Saw them 5 times 77-79. Maximum commitment from Joe every time. Someone said that he sang every line of his songs like it was his last breath: so true.
I met Joe sometime in 1978/79 just after Give 'em enough Rope was released. It was a gig in Camden, North London, UK. I went up to him and said: 'Alright Joe...'ow's it going?" He said: 'Alright...I 'aven't seen you for ages."
I'd never met him before. I was 15/16. He talked about the album. He went to the bar. I followed him. I felt 10 feet tall. That was Joe Strummer.
This piece is one of the great gifts Joe Strummer left us. I love hearing the whole performance from the album - been a while. Maybe I'll throw it on now. Thanks!
Beautiful tribute. My son was born on the 22nd of December, and I hope that I can instill in him the values Joe had, even though he might probably look at me and say 'oh hell, mom! Who is this Joe bloke you keep talking about?'
i have global a go go with the long version but i am obsessed with getting everything joe strummer i can get my hands on but i have not found this anywhere and his music is such a huge part of my life that i actually purchase his albums and don't download them if anyone knows what album i can get this off of and if there is a vinyl version of it the info would be much appreciated
love this song. didn't realize it was so flamin long til i got "global a go-go". was waiting for it to end so i could be on my way. saw the clash at a crap venue in 1979 and have loved them and joe ever since. got to know joe and was mates with him til his death. i miss you joseph R.I. P. til we meet agian.
Domoshigure take a bow for putting up such a great tribute to Joe Strummer....his music changed my way of thinking as a young kid....and by playing the Minstral boy is just perfect....you have done a great service to his fans.....well done...!!!!!
@domoshigure, I was lucky to see The Clash when they came to Monterey at "The Oz" which is long since gone. Joe Strummer and the guys were magnificent. I will say to you and to Joe: Well Done...
The best version of this song ever. It was a tragic day when we lost Joe Strummer.
Makes me think of all the ones who have been lost to war. No matter what side your'e on; you feel for the ones you've lost. RIP Keith Bennett 28th Military Police Company, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, Pennsylvania Army National Guard, Johnstown, Pa.; killed Dec. 112005 by a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device in Ramadi, Iraq.
It is very, very rare that I like a modern version of an old traditional tune, as so often the modern version totally loses the heart and ambiance of a traditional performance.
Joe Strummer's "Minstrel Boy" is an exception. His interpretation retains all the heart, soul and meaning of the traditional tune, and the arrangement with modern instrumentation and vocals is sheer genius in its emotional power. This will stand the test of time.
this is a beuatiful song and Joe is a great singer. This song should be played at war memorials and should always be listened to. RIP Joe we will forever love and cherish this song.
I saw Joe in NYC in Oct. 2001, about five weeks after 9-11. He opened with this song, saying simply, "This is for our friends in New York." A moment I shall never forget. I will never forget Joe, either. I'm glad to say my seventeen year old son and his friend are huge fans of Joe and The Clash. Thanks so much for posting this nice tribute.
All though I do agree that Joe is a good singer . More traditional versions of this song are better and more inspiring . And the least we can do is thank Joe for bringing this Irish republican song to wider acclaim
This is the fight song of our youth football team in Brazil Indiana - The 14th Indiana Lions. Champions in 2003 and 2008 sing along - The mighty Lions are the team to beat; And I'm proud to be a part of them. The gold and purple shall not know defeat; In the end we're bound to show you something. And come what may when the smoke has cleared; The game is won and we are out of here! Left behind, a trail of misery and fear; For we are the mean and mighty Lions! Hah-Zah!!!
I generally don't like these photo-montage things but this made me kind of emotional. I love this song. Joe was really at his peak when he left us. Global-a-go-go was one of the best things he or The Clash ever did,.
I first saw Joe at the Music Machine in Camdem on the The Give 'Em Enough Rope tour and am so sad that the journey ended early.
Thanks for putting this together - I can tell it was done with love.
nice homage. I was so into the clash from their formation years till the end. I wore out London Calling and Sandinista. Their music, besides great to listen to, caused me to examine the politics of the world at an earlier age than most. I saw them warm up the who at rich stadium early 80's. Joe was 5 feet in front of me. He sang like it was his last breath. Played only 45 minutes. Thanks for posting
Thanks for the shout out, bro. I met Johnny cash , too, but wasn't really aware of what he stood for til postmortem. I lived the clash(a little bit) at the time they were happening. London Calling Album opened everything up for me and my friends didn't dig it... I didn't care...followed my ear.. I neglected to mention I fought some jerk to "Police on Back" cause he wouldn't stop moshing me Rock on , young buck!
Outstanding Video. Joe Strummer was a very big influence on me. He was a left handed guitarist playing right handed. I`ve read the name "Strummer" came from when he was seen in england before starting a band he was always strumming a guitar. I`ve always loved how he wrote, very powerful. His beat to hell telecaster has a sound all on it`s own. The clash were the band of there time and no other band ever came close to there style. Long Live Joe Strummer!
The sole reason that I'm letting Blackhawk Down play right now is because I heard the Mescalero's are on the soundtrack. Joe's later work makes me so emotional. I'd probably feel that way if he was still alive, his voice is just so heartfelt, you feel like he means what he's saying, and that's something that's rare in this world. I didn't start listening to the Clash until a year or so ago, and Joe is one of my heroes. RIP, you astounding man.
This song helped me quite a lot during the dark years of my life. Sad, but so uplifting. I salute you, sir! Rest in peace, held in the hearts of many.
Ok boys agree to disagree, it is a top tune and respect to old Joe who would be the first to admit his own paradox's. I didnt know this was an Irish tune so thank you for the nod. I also bet I am older than you pair but i dont want to restart the fight, after all irish man got a lot of problems. Gonna play this great tune a third time now thanks
and for my (Irish sic) friend sitting in sunny seattle Gan údar Do thriall chun catha óg-laoch na rann, Lár námhad Éireann ársaighe; Lann athar fáisgthe air go teann, A n-aoinfheacht lé n-a chláirsigh "A Thír na n-Dán !" arsan an laoch-cheóil grinn, "Dá m-beidheadh an saoghal dod' dhaoradh, Tá aon chruit amháin lé do mholadh go binn, 'S aon lann amháin lé do shaoradh !" Thank me later Mo Chara.
God bless Joe Strummer. He was a man who understood the suffering and hardships of the disposessed all over the world.
He was an English Punk who could understand the pain of the Irish. As a person of Irish and English ancestry, his rendition of this song holds a deep place in my heart.
He's one of my greatest heroes and biggest influences as a musician and I know that Joe's message, persona, memory, and values will never fade away.
I was referring to the fact that Joe was an English punk singing an Irish folk song, and I'm a person of mostly Irish and English-mixed ancestry, so hearing Joe sing it really means a lot to me.
He was an Englishman who understood the suffering of the Irish, and to me, that's huge.
He understood the suffering of the Irish? what like going on a photoshoot outside army barracks when he was in the clash slap bang in the middle of the troubles? He once wore a H-Block T-Shirt but what was the message he was trying to portray there? Who knows? and tell me for a man thats sang about Nicaraguan Sandinistas, Spanish Civil War, Social and economic problems in the U.S.A and England, Racial problems in England,
what did he ever say of any relevance about Ireland? I think the song would more than probably came to his attention through his mate Tymon Dogg, the fiddle player on the song, Strummer whilst being a lyrical and worldly sussed guy shyed away from anything to do with Ireland. Thats the truth. Ive loved Joe Strummer for many many years but he shirked away from Ireland. See S.L.F about understanding Ireland mate.
I never said he said anything about Ireland per se. I said he understood their suffering. You got my point.
Joe was worldly and he understood disposessed people and the Irish have been one of the most opressed groups in the world since the days of Oliver Cromwell.
I do know that the Clash also perfomed in front of a Belfast backdrop in the 70's. I've always seen Joe as an anti-imperialist.
As for S.L.F., could you elaborate? Would I be correct in guessing that you're English?
Also, I wouldn't be surprised to learn the Tymon Dogg had brought the song to his attention. I'm willing to bet that I'm younger than you, but I'm a musician myself. I know who Tymon Dogg is =P
It WAS Tymon. He played it 1 night and they learned it and ended up playing it most nights since, trust me i seen them a few times. Youre willing to bet youre younger than me? Whats that meant to mean??? Sounds like you are. BUT youre a musician??? Whoopee Doo. Ive a guitar and can play the flute and drum. so i must be a musician too? Id like to think you know who Tymon Dogg is. Im glad for you. whats your point here?
A great song about the genocide of the irish, 2 million murdered, 2 million sent into exile. The irish famine, industrial murder commited against a noble race.
An emotionally stirring and inspirational song, the "Minstrel Boy" was written by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) who set it to the melody of "The Moreen", an old Irish aire. It is believed by many that Moore composed the song as a memorial to several of his friends he had met while a student at Trinity College and who had participated in the 1798 rebellion of the United Irishmen. One died in prison, another was wounded, and a third captured and hung. The song originally consisted of two verses.
This song always makes my heart swell up. I answer to my kids when asked "dad who was your hero" I always reply it is Joe Strummer. Great song with a lot of meaning, much as Joe was and continues to be.
there is a 3rd verse though not sung herebut i think its relevent to Joe
The minstrel boy will return one day, When we hear the news, we will cheer it. The minstrel boy will return we pray, Torn in body, perhaps, but not in spirit. Then may he play his harp in peace, In a world such as Heaven intended, For every quarrel of Man must cease, And every battle shall be ended.
The minstrel boy to the war is gone, In the ranks of death you'll find him; His father's sword he hath girded on, And his wild harp slung behind him; "Land of Song!" cried the warrior bard, "Tho' all the world betrays thee, One sword, at least, thy right shall guard, One faithful harp shall praise thee!"
Although i never spoke to the man, Joe Strummer was and always will be my hero and an inspiration to be a better person, his songs and his attitude give me hope when all is looking lost, he touched my life in a way not even my own father did, a unique, inspirational, intelligent, punk rock warlord who i will always admire, i will always keep his memory alive. rest your rock n roll soul Joe, always thinking of you mate, THANKS

Well, Bogie has a "legit" chance as he would have only been going on 52 since he was born on 12/25/1899 (Merry Christmas World!)
and Joe was born on 08/21/1952 which would means conception was approx 12/21/1951 (Merry Christmas again World!!!).
The real question is where was Bogie when Joe was conceived?
Apologies to anyone who finds this comparison offensive.
That said, I'm truly a big fan of both . . .

He is singing and playing with his band, The Mescaleros, but this song is a cover, I think it is traditional.

In the late 70's,I hated his guts, thinking he was just another Punk.
An Anti music, sloganeering twat, pushing a dubious agenda.
By the mid 80's.I had realized that he was actually rather intelligent and talented.I quickly got up to speed and rediscovered THE CLASH.
By the mid 90's,he was just like me! or at least seemed to be making the music I would make if I could.
By 2005,I was missing him more than nearly any other musician I've ever loved!..

The Minstrel Boy to the war is gone
In the ranks of death you will find him;
His father's sword he hath girded on,
And his wild harp slung behind him;"
Land of Song!" said the warrior bard,
"Tho' all the world betrays thee,
One sword, at least, thy rights shall guard,
One faithful harp shall praise thee!"

The Minstrel fell! But the foeman's chain
Could not bring that proud soul under;
The harp he lov'd ne'er spoke again,
For he tore its chords asunder;
And said "No chains shall sully thee,
Thou soul of love and brav'ry!
Thy songs were made for the pure and free,
They shall never sound in slavery!"
caecilius192 3 years ago 4
oh how sad he died I had no idea, this song really left an impression on me.

It should be noted that Joe never wrote the song; however, he sings the most haunting version. He will be missed dearly.
AcolyteAbyss 3 years ago
Agreed. Joe had a way of bringing out the true emotion of any song. His version of Redemption Song is, in my opinion better than any that Marley did.
fightinscot 3 years ago
I never knew he sang a cover of Redemption Song. Thanks for the lead. It is great. :D
AcolyteAbyss 3 years ago
I agree! he might have been "punk" but had so much heart, that Redemption song is wonderful! I cant stop listening to these two songs...

I know. Me either.

Peace and love from Seattle!
Joe never died!
NuNegus 3 years ago
He's got Scottish ancestry, not irish, his mother was from the scottish highlands.
STRUMMER772003 2 years ago
I know he was Scottish on his mother's side.
I was referring to the fact that Joe was an English punk singing an Irish folk song, and I'm a person of mostly Irish and English-mixed ancestry, so hearing Joe sing it really means a lot to me.
He was an Englishman who understood the suffering of the Irish, and to me, that's huge.
NuNegus 2 years ago
He understood the suffering of the Irish? what like going on a photoshoot outside army barracks when he was in the clash slap bang in the middle of the troubles? He once wore a H-Block T-Shirt but what was the message he was trying to portray there? Who knows? and tell me for a man thats sang about Nicaraguan Sandinistas, Spanish Civil War, Social and economic problems in the U.S.A and England, Racial problems in England,

CONTINUED:
what did he ever say of any relevance about Ireland? I think the song would more than probably came to his attention through his mate Tymon Dogg, the fiddle player on the song, Strummer whilst being a lyrical and worldly sussed guy shyed away from anything to do with Ireland. Thats the truth. Ive loved Joe Strummer for many many years but he shirked away from Ireland. See S.L.F about understanding Ireland mate.
STRUMMER772003 2 years ago
I never said he said anything about Ireland per se. I said he understood their suffering. You got my point.
Joe was worldly and he understood disposessed people and the Irish have been one of the most opressed groups in the world since the days of Oliver Cromwell.
I do know that the Clash also perfomed in front of a Belfast backdrop in the 70's. I've always seen Joe as an anti-imperialist.
As for S.L.F., could you elaborate? Would I be correct in guessing that you're English?
NuNegus 2 years ago
Also, I wouldn't be surprised to learn the Tymon Dogg had brought the song to his attention. I'm willing to bet that I'm younger than you, but I'm a musician myself. I know who Tymon Dogg is =P
NuNegus 2 years ago
It WAS Tymon. He played it 1 night and they learned it and ended up playing it most nights since, trust me i seen them a few times. Youre willing to bet youre younger than me? Whats that meant to mean??? Sounds like you are. BUT youre a musician??? Whoopee Doo. Ive a guitar and can play the flute and drum. so i must be a musician too? Id like to think you know who Tymon Dogg is. Im glad for you. whats your point here?
STRUMMER772003 2 years ago
how understood Irish suffering? Apart from singing an old folk song that WAS Tymon Doggs idea.
I know a bit about Irelands suffering. Famine, Revolution, Oppression, Risings, Battles, Hunger Strikes.
They didnt perform in front of a Belfast backdrop, it was from the notting hill riots.Ive always seen him as Anti-Fascist, Anti-Racist, Anti-Violence.
S.L.F understnd more and sing about Irish troubles more thn Joe. Name 1 song where Joe sings about whats going on in Ireland?
Im Scottish

The song originally consisted of two verses.

drummerkane1 3 years ago 5
there is a 3rd verse though not sung herebut i think its relevent to Joe
The minstrel boy will return one day, When we hear the news, we will cheer it. The minstrel boy will return we pray, Torn in body, perhaps, but not in spirit. Then may he play his harp in peace, In a world such as Heaven intended, For every quarrel of Man must cease, And every battle shall be ended.
STRUMMER772003 3 years ago 3
I definately agreee with that statement. At least, I know I'm praying for Joe to return...
