timing was really good, but for me the bunkai was the bog standard obvious ones. the more interesting are the movments inbetween the blocks, which are really breaks and locks :)
Wado looks to me like a nifty style, and at least Iain Abernethy knows a ton about bunkai; looks like he'd hold his on in a set-to, as well. The youngsters in this demonstration are doing the right thing; if you exercise when you're young, and keep it up, you stay flexible and strong when you're older. And since there are thousands of bunkai encoded in the kata, these are a nice sampler package of 'em. Keep up the good work, and keep training!
However, I truly believe that the blend of Yoshindo Ju-Jitsu & Okinawan Te, in Wado Ryu qualifies it as one of the best Martial styles in the World. But to be able to achieve this you need to look deeper into its origins, & find its true roots.
I studied wado for 15 years, & then went on to study Ju-Jitsu Aiki-Jitsu. I think much of the Bunkai is not known by most instructors & what is taught is assumed to be correct. While studying older styles you start to see comparisons with Wado. What we saw in this clip was very robotic, & is only a reflection of its true roots. Unfortunately it is a product of years of overly strict Katas.
Nice bunkai--I really like the throws especially. The kata itself is a little different from how I do it, but my style is Shindo Jinen Ryu (Ryobu-Kai).
Not bad for Wado-Ryu... Although videos like this seem to serve as a reminder that if you really want to learn and demonstrate kate maybe you should practise Shito-Ryu instead...
I really don't understand how one video can express why Shito-ryu kata would be better for demonstration than Wado-ryu kata. All the video demonstrates is that these students know a bunkai for Jion, and even though it is not perfect, they are learning in the process.
As for the video, the interpretation is interesting, but I feel that the spirit is really lacking in the movement, both in the kata and the bunkai. I do like some of the attacks that came out of the bunkai though.
What rubbish! Wado has its roots in a blend of two separate styles & it would not serve the one by focusing purely on the other. How would you understand Ju-Jitsu by focusing on a pure style like Okinawan Karate Shito-Ryu? With the greatest respect this comment had no solid foundation of knowledge behind it.
If you didnt know already, Karate already had jujitsu beended in before Wado. And if you couldnt see the jujitsu in this video then you didnt learn much in your 15 years did ya? Never underestimate direct and to the point applications, you can keep your fairy tale crane bunkai.
Fantastic one!

bunkai was very good - you guys have clearly worked on it.
What I like most is you show and understand the body mechanics unique to wado - the throws especially. Thats what sets Wado apart from shotokan etc.
The kata on its own... yes to someone used to 'exhibition' tournament katas it did look 'not bad' - but showing off is not what its about.
good stuff! nice to see karateka that deserve their dan belts
