i'm not Russian, i'm American, but even I get annoyed at all the dehumanization that went on during the Cold War (and sort of was repeated to a lesser extent against Arabs more recently).
I like movies like this. They're eye opening, theyre hilarious, theyre memorable, and they actually have a moral message too
@dchris1990 Then I was also a child here, at Brazil . I think the anticommunist atmosphere imposed by the military dictatorship was such strong , which maybe never existed in US since the Macarthy era. I remember my family ,as well as other persons ,being surprised from the title, and scared of going to the cinemas, choosing other movies.

Excellent premise and would have done better as a straight drama or comedy ONLY IF the script had been more inspired. As it is, this is a plodding piece of dull nonsense that would be a total snore if Reiner hadn't been yelling at points throughout that break the slumber. Love Arkin but he really has nothing to work with here. '66 definitely a bad year for movies since this dung was nominated for BP.
Does anyone know the name of the song that plays when the Russians first actually land on the shore with their boat, and then later when the air force leaves?
I didn't think I'd like the movie when I watched it, but it was surprisingly good. Normally, movies about the USSR during the Cold War era were heavy with pro-US propaganda, but in this one the Soviets get away and aren't ideologically converted.
And for everyone wondering, the Soviet/Russian songs are Polushko Pole and Ey, Ukhnem (Song of the Volga Boatmen).
@MaoiMeowi2 , This was the Mirsch corporation and it was done as a farce, not heavy handed like Doctor Strangelove but just what if.. .. it's a really good movie.
See the TRAC 8/13 (The Russians Are Coming) link? Start there. When it starts to play find TRAC1/13. Then follow TRAC 2/13 and so on. In 1966, I was 9 years old when this movie came out. I saw it on TV later on. I have not seen it since - till now.
Now tell me I am the only one who considers this a prequel to "Red Dawn", hee hee hee

Your comments are most moving and true. Still, the final breakthrough comes when the Russians now Arabs see this too, and aye there's the rub.
But we must be willing to dream, and God bless all dreamers, on both sides.

@kingbadmovie ..the song when the shore party sets out is the Soldier's Chorus from the opera 'The Decembrists' by Yuri A. Shaporin...hope this helps

That was my same worry, and I ended up liking the movie as well. I'm glad it showed the Soviets even as heroes at points.
