It is interesting that he talks about 'sending it'. He first starts talking about 'shooting' and how it is 'murder' but then it seems like he is desensitizing himself. I can feel the conflict in him. This guy didnt use any Marine terminology (Scout sniper school, boot camp, rifle range, spotter, infantry, stationed in Camp Lejeune not "Camp Lejeune was my base camp, i pretty much stayed there most times").In the Marine Corps, your attached to a unit, you don't just stay somewhere most times. Less then 10% of the Army's MOS' will ever do any firefighting in a real environment. That being said about 50% of the Army consist of that 10%. Almost anything you can do as a profession in the civilian world there is a counterpart in the Army.

I was a DS for 3 years and NEVER saw anyone shoot expert. And you can't CHEAT on a range. You almost NEVER talk to your Colonel. He won't be giving your ass orders neither hence a chain of command. And you are NEVER told just shoot anything that moves. I'm not tooting my own horn but 4 years of Rangers.
I shot expert 9 times. you don't know what you are talking about. We re-shoot every year. There are 3 marksmanship awards depending on your score: Marksman, Sharpsooter and Expert. When you are a Marine Sniper you work VERY closely with high ranking officers. They are the ones that deploy you into an area to set up. This is not like combat. This is very different.
You shot expert 9 times in basic? I am familiar with the scoring in qualifying with a weapon. Like I said. 22 Years retired. There is a chain of command for a reason. I know marine snipers operate differently but so do rangers. We NEVER got orders to sit in one spot kill anyone who was there. We dont ever operate under those pretenses. Every sniper I know still reported through chain of command. There is no need to get direct orders from such a higher up. But maybe marines are ass backwards.
No not in Boot Camp. you only qualify once. However you CAN shoot Expert. Many do. Snipers with the Marines are attached to a unit for a specific operation. In other words we had them in Desert Storm. They were placed near where we were with Starlight Scopes. Their orders were to kill anything forward of our position that moved. Anything forward of us was enemy so they had free range. I'm not doubting your service neither should you doubt his.
I did make it clear I don't know 100% of how marines operate. I was also a drill sergeant and Expert qual was few and far between. But maybe standards are different. I trained Cav Scouts and we had alot to focus on. I served in DS but never worked with marines. I have never been told to fire on anything ahead of us. Because its not always guaranteed that someone would know if our forces were in the area and FF would be terrible. Our sniper still had a spotter and called in their kills.
I also just kinda don't find the story interesting in the least. A gutless killing machine at 20? have taught me that. They tell you one shot one kill because your barrel heats up and your shots arn't as accurate afterwords. I don't know how marines do it but our snipers use spotters who are equally trained to do their job. Also sniping takes alot of math on the go. Not just aim and fire from 900 yards. You don't approach the bodies you use binos to check your kill unless they dropped behind cover. You can sleep hence you have a spotter. You trade off. You have water and rations.

Our squad sniper carried 3 weapons, his rifle, m9, and m4. I understand this was a while ago but still the technique and skills are relatively the same. I was a DS for 3 years and NEVER saw anyone shoot expert. And you can't CHEAT on a range. You almost NEVER talk to your Colonel. He won't be giving your ass orders neither hence a chain of command. And you are NEVER told just shoot anything that moves. I'm not tooting my own horn but 4 years of Rangers.

I shot expert 9 times. you don't know what you are talking about. We re-shoot every year. There are 3 marksmanship awards depending on your score: Marksman, Sharpsooter and Expert. When you are a Marine Sniper you work VERY closely with high ranking officers. They are the ones that deploy you into an area to set up. This is not like combat. This is very different.

You shot expert 9 times in basic? I am familiar with the scoring in qualifying with a weapon. Like I said. 22 Years retired. There is a chain of command for a reason. I know marine snipers operate differently but so do rangers. We NEVER got orders to sit in one spot kill anyone who was there. We dont ever operate under those pretenses. Every sniper I know still reported through chain of command. There is no need to get direct orders from such a higher up. But maybe marines are ass backwards.

No not in Boot Camp. you only qualify once. However you CAN shoot Expert. Many do. Snipers with the Marines are attached to a unit for a specific operation. In other words we had them in Desert Storm. They were placed near where we were with Starlight Scopes. Their orders were to kill anything forward of our position that moved. Anything forward of us was enemy so they had free range. I'm not doubting your service neither should you doubt his.

I did make it clear I don't know 100% of how marines operate. I was also a drill sergeant and Expert qual was few and far between. But maybe standards are different. I trained Cav Scouts and we had alot to focus on. I served in DS but never worked with marines. I have never been told to fire on anything ahead of us. Because its not always guaranteed that someone would know if our forces were in the area and FF would be terrible. Our sniper still had a spotter and called in their kills.

have taught me that. They tell you one shot one kill because your barrel heats up and your shots arn't as accurate afterwords. I don't know how marines do it but our snipers use spotters who are equally trained to do their job. Also sniping takes alot of math on the go. Not just aim and fire from 900 yards. You don't approach the bodies you use binos to check your kill unless they dropped behind cover. You can sleep hence you have a spotter. You trade off. You have water and rations.

Our squad sniper carried 3 weapons, his rifle, m9, and m4. I understand this was a while ago but still the technique and skills are relatively the same. He also never gives an example of a specific event where he shot someone. I can remember many times I have pulled a trigger and not killed anyone.

The sniper is the best weapon in the US arsenal. There is nearly no risk of collateral damage and it is absolutely certain that the person the sniper kills is an enemy. Remember, every enemy the sniper kills would kill him or a brother soldier/sailor/airman or Marine given the chance. Those bastard didnt give me a sniper rifle because they threw me to an artillery battelion I passed the sharp shooters courses with first place and because we don't have this weapons at our disposal then I didn't get it~! damn it I allways wanted to be a sniper =[ and that feeling of "betrail" is "Ownage" mate... he didn't see it coming and u owned him >=]

With an attitude like that, I can see why they didn't want you sniping.
Sniping is not glamourous. It is a horrible, horrible, horrible thing for everybody involved, but sometimes it is justified.
Same with artillery or any other aerial bombardment. "No-one should ever be bombed from the air; nothing could be more obvious"
