  • Maria's not the only one who went on to bigger things. Worth noting that the the fiddler is Richard Greene, and the guy on 5-sting is Bill Keith, who literally wrote the book on Earl Scruggs. Hell, rumor has it that they had God playing mouth harp. Honest to God.

  • For those who don't know, when pot possession was harsh in the extreme, these guy's were smoking during their performances. Saw them at Sheep's Meadow, great performance and the band and audience were all lighting up.

  • Another one introduced to the world by Dr. Demento :)

  • @alshouse Sorry, but Kweskin and the Jig band were around long before Dr. D was created....

  • Why, I was just Viper-izing and synchro-mystically here I am!

  • And if you're in the vicinity of Shirley, MA this Friday, Nov. 12, stop by the Bull Run Restaurant and see Jim Kweskin and Geoff Muldaur together in a very special show at 8pm.

  • The Jim Kweskin Jug Band

  • I'm desperate to know the chords/tabs for the JK Jug Band's version of this song!!!!

  • Memories! I knew Jimmy from when we used to go to the same summer day camp together (think elementary school). Many years ago I was watching The Late Show with Jimmy Dean as the guest host. My ears perked up when he announced that the musical group for the night was Jim Queskin and the Jug Band. That's when I knew Jimmy had made the big time. Watching this makes it easy to go back to the folkie days when we were both young.

  • The absolute best jugband of the modern era, singing a really cool song about SMOKING POT!

  • Jeez, I miss jim kweskin---i just about memorized the playlist from the "relax your mind" LP. Was that ever released on CD?

  • took a big hit. In 1969 We ran the poppycock nightclub, did the light shows and lived upstairs. . at the corner of University and High st in Palo Alto. As close as you could be to Stanford. And Kweskin, Country Joe, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Lighning Hopkins and many others like these played there. we were 19 yrs old and had the entire building to ourselves. great days.

  • Got to mention also the great Richard Green on fiddle and Geoff and Mary Muldaur also incredibly talented. And Kweskin had the pizazz.

  • @Raymantico

Don't forget the amazing Bill Keith on banjo!!

  • @Feist9 my very hep friend...I had two comments below and you'll note the second one honors Bill K. who I just saw in a cool blue grass band with Clarence White video last night...think it's in my favorites (also saw him w/Kweskin at Newport FolK)

  • @Raymantico

I stand corrected fine sir. I notice you also mention Fritz, who left quite a legacy in Portland, OR. Of which I now reside. Much love for Fritz here! Lots of fun Jug and Skiffle.

  • That was Fritz Richmond genius of the jug.

They also had a virtuoso on banjo (Bill Keith) and on harp (Mel Lyman--gone by this gig).

This song's longtime favorite--don't know why...

  • My favorite band in the 60's. Too bad there don't seem to be many clips...

  • Neat version of the song. But why was it all chopped up?

  • Great to see and hear Jim. Just added my name and family to the Kweskin family tree. Touched base with him too! GREAT stuff as always.

  • that bass is badass!

  • where is the rest of it....Can you post the whole thing?........kinda looses it's flow when its all cut up

  • Written by the great Fats Waller

  • It was actually written by Stuff Smith, A jazz violinist in the 30s!

  • i want one of those basses

  • Fritz Richmond played the washbtub as bass. Geoff still plays and he is BETTER THAN EVER, his voice is incredibly rich now and he guitar playing is oh-so-sweet, I've seen him a few times in and around Boston these past couple of years. One of the greats, highly underrated .......he and Maria did some terrific numbers together. I use to hear these guys while in high school in the 60's at the Club 47, great days..:-)

  • Good to see... I don't suppose you have any clips featuring the notorious Mel Lyman....?

  • They're not promoting the use of marijuana. They're just singing a classic tune about getting stoned.

  • Thank you, three time... for this three clips!

It's a good day for die!!

  • I love these guys. Technically I don't regard it as a jug band though, unless it has either somebody playing (a) a washboard, (b) a saw, or of course (c) a jug!!

  • Picky, picky it's Jug Band Music alright.

  • Check out The Jim Kweskin JUG Band (a song with Maria Muldaur) you'll see A JUG.

  • The bass player here also plays the jug and is amazing. I saw him afew years before he passed away, playing with Geoff Muldaur. If you can finsd a song called "Jug Band Waltz" you will get a taste of his jug.

  • It's awesome to SEE my distant relative, Jim, singing here. Otherwise I would listen to my albums of his band.

  • Washtub player Fritz Richmond has passed away...nice to see this video...wish there were more of Geoff Muldaur

  • This is great!! I think the fiddler is Richard Greene and the banjo player must be Bill Keith. These guys are both legends themselves. Thanks for sharing this!
