guys i have got a cheness (9260) too. its the one on the homepage called kurome.
i thought it would be rly sharp so i can cut paper. shouldnt it be like that? i mean if i hold paper and in my other hand my katana i cant cut the paper cuz the paper moves asap when i put the edge of the sword on it. would u recommend me to sharpen it? i wont do it myself but a smith.
Well, I guess it might be good, but for a replica or for wall hanger, but not for a battle ready katana, I think those need to be harder for blocking and sparring
spring steel owns EXCEPT for edge retention is very bad compared to others...... my favorite steel is 1055-1095 HC types for all purpose, AUS 8A for survival (a flexible, great alloy of stainless steel finally!) if you don't have oils and maybe VG-10, and for only a combat knife I MIGHT even choose D2 but probably not cuz it's so brittle bones might break it, I have a friend who heard some guy broke his D2 knife when chopping through WOOD so think again.
Did you watch the videos on YouTube that they are beating on metal drums with a Cheness O-Katana? It's made from 9260 spring steel and it held it's edge pretty damn good under the circumstances! I think that it's sad that people like you who don't know what they are talking about, come on here and post anything without actually owning one! Your inaccurate post might influence someone to foolishly listen to you and make a bad purchase. Are you a competitor of theirs...
If you take the time to read the comments I was responding to, then you would see that THEY where hating and I was setting the record straight! They can't just bash Cheness swords without having ever used one! The swords have been reviewed very favorably by many sword enthusiasts, including Paul Southren who runs "sword-buyers-guide,com". These people do this for a living , and are obviously much more qualified to comment about the quality than a bunch of idiots on YouTube!
Ok it sure looks as if the competition is a aluminum laito sword. It bent like a fork out of a silverware set. It really should have been far more resistant to bending then that. Not that it wouldn't bend, but come on !! Technically any sword of any brand of any type would be the competition right? So they didn't lie.
the compeditor is not even a good sword to begin with, it it was a proper japanese non-spring steel sword, he wouldn't even be able to bend it, or if he did, u would hear a huge CRACK lol but spring steel katanas are good, i rather the non-spring steel ones, i prefer having spring steel in a chinese double edged sword.
@redviolin1231 Bending an authentic sword is actually quite easy. It does have a high degree of resilience though. No cracks or anything. Dunno where you got your BS from.
There are no spring-steel katanas to begin with. If its made from spring steel or cheap stainless it is only a visual replica. No authentic sword is made of spring-steel, only replicas for fanboys are. Some swords have spring-temper though.
@Buuub08 i didn't say it was an authentic katana made from spring steel but i own one and i enjoy it alot rofl...
and really? i thought it would be really hard to "bend" it cause if u know the process of making a authentic katana, after hardening, it makes the steel on the edge very hard and brittle, so im suprised that i didn't here a crack or see the sword snap instead of bend to that degree lol it doesn't look like an authentic katana rofl
@redviolin1231 The edge of an authentic katana isnt THAT hard nor THAT brittle. Although yes - the edge is the hardest part of the blade. However, combined with the overall resilient outer layer of the blade and the soft core you end up with a flexible sword. A sword HAS TO BE flexible or it would not be able to absorb impact. A good sword should be able to be bent to about 90 degrees and still return to its original shape without taking a set.
Spring steel in general is quite resilient, thats why its called spring steel. Using this makes the time consuming lamination and tempering process unnecessary. Thats why its a common choice nowadays for sword replicas.
@violaman4 , carbon content and silicon determines flexability in steel as an alloy .
all spring steels are between .6 and 1.3% carbon by weight . too much carbon and it becomes bextremely tough but brittle . more likely to snap than bend.
a good spring steel will have a carbon ratio allowing it to flex but not break , it has whats called a memory in its crystaline lattice , so it can return to the shape it was when it was heat treated and tempered.
and heres a fact that some dont know about popular high carbons . the high carbons known as 1050,1060,1075,1084 and 1095 . ARE ALL SPRING STEELS.
the nubers in there title refer to there carbon to iron ratio . Example 1050 is 50 parts carbon to 1000 parts iron = .5% carbon by weight . 1095 is 95 parts carbon to 1000 parts iron = .95% carbon by weight .proper heat treating and tempering is actually what makes these steels good performers for swords .
yes sping steel is good , pretty high carbon and silicon . allowing for flex and memory of its crystalline lattice . meaning it can be bent many times and return to its regular shape .
good for swords , depending on its heat treating . cheness is pretty well known for durable , useable swords for a pretty low price . if your looking for a sword that you can get years of fun chopping up shit in your back yard id recomend . if your looking for a folded steel blade go with munetoshi brand.
spring steels fucking amazing, i wanna try to smelt it with 1095 high carbon and see if itll make Spring Damascus Steel, THAT would make a fucking AMAZING katana
@lussifer99 Both are actually spring steels ;) i've recently found a clock spring steel on the scrapyard, was indeed 1095 (btween 0.90 to 1.03% Carbon and 0.30 to 0.50 % of manganese) this manganese makes the 1095 layers in the steel very black when etched, i've made a blade with L6 sawblade-steel and 1095, but i haven't etched it yet, guess it'ss come out pweetty nice :) don't know why i postedt this actually, just have the need to be a wiseguy sometimes sorry bout that
@lussifer99 doing a smelt of 9260 spring and 1095 high carbon mix in a half and half ratio by weight . would give you a high carbon with medium low silicon content . wich would have to be homoginized and normalized poured into a brick then folded to remove minor impurities and , you would basicly lose the flexing benefits of the silicon . you would be left with good high carbon , around 1 % but would be alot less work to simply start with a good high carbon .
is incredible. It lacks a hamon (temper line) but it has a silicon alloying agent in the metal that allows it to bounce back from (almost) any impact, without losing it's edge. Check out the destructive tests for Cheness spring steel swords
Do your research moron! Do you personally own one? Probably not right? Did you know that most people who bash these swords are actually competitors who sell inferior quality blades for more money, and are just jealous? Buy one and use it yourself before you judge, otherwise don't bother telling us what "someone else" told you!
@jacobleb420 fuck you asshole i sent that like a year ago, and it wasn't in the direction of every inbred son of a bitch that gets offended over cheap replica swords. get a life!
It doesn't matter how long ago you posted the comment, it's still complete bullshit! Also I don't know how pointing out the stupidity of your comment somehow makes me "inbred". I was not getting offended, I was just setting the record straight! Yeah it's not a REAL Japanese Katana, but I would never call it a CHEAP replica! These swords have proven time and time again that they are usually STRONGER than a REAL katana, for under 1/10 the price! I have a life, and it involves swords!
Spring steel is an attribute completely separate from the type of tang. Yes a rat tail tang is (very) bad but that has nothing to do with the type of steel used. Spring steel is good because it resists deformation from bending or worse yet shattering. Keep in mind that just because a company says a sword is "spring steel" that doesn't guarantee quality. Your best bet is to do some research and buy from a reputable company.
Spring steel is amazing in terms of durability. It has silicon instead of carbon. To avoid the chemistry lesson, its much more resilient than high carbon steel as shown in the video. @FlashMob22 Anything from Cheness is almost always good. Spring steel is great because it's able to bend and snap back to it's original position (Just like a fencing sword)
Further more, if it's Cheness' 9260 Spring Steel, It's one of the toughest blades around.
I can't say anything else from other companies, because I've only buy my Katana from Cheness or SBG Shop

chenese dont have katana, Katana is a japanese sword forged for samurai an is reflect his life and his honor. you shoul know that befor do another wrrong title.
Man. I feel for you --- some people rush on and jump the gate before they check to see if it would simply open..... it must give you a head ache !! Good vids Br' Thanks eh..
The spring-steel is what makes it strong and go back after being bent.
A true, japanese-made tamahagane blade (a Nihonto), created by a master smith, costing ridiculous amounts of money, WILL bend (or break) and not return to normal.
Modern spring-steel *IS* tougher than traditional tamahagane.
Besides Cheness, Dynasty Forge also makes springsteel katanas. The whole Musha line is springsteel.
But I wouldn't use it much... or any at all, cause I'm not skilled with a katana and would probably easily destroy it (even if i tried to be careful).
It's an artwork and shouldn't be used, much, if any... kind of like an antique car or something similar.
If I could get an actual Nihonto for free (yeah right), I would either just put it on display and take care of it, OR sell it and use the money to buy a bunch of useful stuff.
......................... is it powerful enough to withstand a giant sword or large abject coming to you and trying to look cool destorying it with the sword.
hey just wondering, how hard is the spring steel? would you be able to harden the cutting edge to get it really sharp while leaving the back of the blade soft like on a proper forged katana?
im confident the dude didnt bend the sword, the sword pushed on the dudes hand and on the table with enough force to bend itself, therefore physics bent the sword
These are excellent blades and well worth the money paid for them. Although I bought mine from Cheness the Sword Store at Sword Buyers Guide had some good buys on these blades.
I ordered a Kaze Katana and mine arrived dull/blunt right out of the box, it wouldn't cut anything and Paul Chen from Cheness left me hanging with a lot of bullshit, but i never got a new sharp sword. You better save up your money and go for the real deal, Don't buy this chinese piece of shit!
I have had those swords that bend and stay bent when you cut something it should have easily cut and it makes your heart sink a little bit knowing that you just paid $400 for a piece of crap. This is my next sword steel. I like the whole design of the Shinobi Katana(and there are still Ninja) I trust the Sword Buyers Guide dude, he tried to destroy that sword and it withstood the challenge.
"I have had those swords that bend and stay bent when you cut something it should have easily cut" thats the product of a bad cut... not a bad sword...
spring steel is just more forgiving of those bad cuts
although you bring up a valid point all cheness is doing is providing is affordable swords so people can keep practicing japanese sword and keeping the art alive. I mean mny people that work at cheness are iaido practitioners including paul chen
Here is a sword that if taken back to the middle ages would more than impress. If this metal technology was discovered further back in time then what people consider as authentic would be different .. people are just stubborn or brainwashed and this slows moving forward.,
I have permanently bent enough swords to learn that spring steel has its merits.
but you can atleast acknowledge that it doesnt hold nearly as nice an edge... dont get me wrong i love the 9260 series.. and they really are as durable as people say
Wow..just how arrogant can a person be..? OH YA..just as arrogant as YOU. You do understand that the Chinese were making swords Before the Japanese, Right? And Katana the SOUL?? Sounds like sumbudys been watching to many Tom Cruise movies. DUDE, this is not 1850. And not to take this too too far, but YES, I suppose you could be proud of a Harley made in Chinaif you were Chinese. ASS
Actually some of the techniques used in Japanese sword making was taken from the Chinese way...so I do no understand how some people say a "Chinese" Katana is inferior. The reason some Japanese Katanas cost so much is the availability of them and because you are paying for traditional methods of use. In other words you are buying a Ferrari which while well made is comparable in durability to a Toyota, which is more affordable to a broader base. Catch my drift?
the non spring might be a low end sword so it broke the crystal structure in the metal and lost its shape ps the musashi tora is practically invincible
Not only was the second sword not spring steel, it didn't even look like it was heat treated or tempered. You shouldn't be able to bend a sword that easily unless it was in its annealed state.
9260 spring steel, the stuff is so strong a guy had to hit one of those swords with a hammer several times to break it, and this was after he tried to cut open an anvil with it!!!
NOOB TALK all these ppl that knock the 9260 Cheness Katanas dont know nothing i bought the Kraze and as soon as i got it i started cutting four by four with it i would even cut dog bones clean in half so guess what if ever brought up with the situation to kill someone i think my Kraze will make even handmade Japanese Katanas look bad.
yes i know how well does the kaze cut i herd it hold and edge better than my tenchi but it is not as durable as the tenchi some people call it the tatami killer
wow you cousin must have good form to get through 5 the most i can cut at once is a 5 roll with bamboo core but i still have difficulty with the cleanness of the cut
Hmm...I think it is about the same, about more in the direcetion of the SGC, because it is more durable and can allow for more abuse, but kaze is softer and is vulnerable to rolling and chipping more frequently. Sharpness=kaze Rolling and chipping less=SGC
cold steel is a company spring steel is a special king of carbon steel tempered so it is clexible if you take fencing the foils are spring steel it is really strong i have cut with my cousins cheness spring steel blade
LOL ya good comparison when competitor uses Aluminum/zinc alloy blade

It's an artwork and shouldn't be used, much, if any... kind of like an antique car or something similar.
If I could get an actual Nihonto for free (yeah right), I would either just put it on display and take care of it, OR sell it and use the money to buy a bunch of useful stuff.
SlLENTHlLL 2 years ago 2
Yeah :) I hope one day I'll have one nihonto... But now I can't even have a Cheness... :(

Gin132456 2 years ago
......................... is it powerful enough to withstand a giant sword or large abject coming to you and trying to look cool destorying it with the sword.
lirg123 2 years ago
hey just wondering, how hard is the spring steel? would you be able to harden the cutting edge to get it really sharp while leaving the back of the blade soft like on a proper forged katana?
PuppaTekeO 2 years ago
only if it is differentially hardened which the silicon steel blades aren't....

i love to weld with spring steel and make knives its so ideal for weapons
gamidevil 3 years ago
im confident the dude didnt bend the sword, the sword pushed on the dudes hand and on the table with enough force to bend itself, therefore physics bent the sword
starshock01 3 years ago
Im equally confident that the dudes hand had SUMTHING to do w it...it wasn't the Force bending that shit
DmakAttack 3 years ago 2
These are excellent blades and well worth the money paid for them. Although I bought mine from Cheness the Sword Store at Sword Buyers Guide had some good buys on these blades.
PublicDisgrace2 3 years ago
This has been flagged as spam show
I ordered a Kaze Katana and mine arrived dull/blunt right out of the box, it wouldn't cut anything and Paul Chen from Cheness left me hanging with a lot of bullshit, but i never got a new sharp sword. You better save up your money and go for the real deal, Don't buy this chinese piece of shit!
Therealscientizt 3 years ago
I have had those swords that bend and stay bent when you cut something it should have easily cut and it makes your heart sink a little bit knowing that you just paid $400 for a piece of crap. This is my next sword steel. I like the whole design of the Shinobi Katana(and there are still Ninja) I trust the Sword Buyers Guide dude, he tried to destroy that sword and it withstood the challenge.
Dwendt 3 years ago
"I have had those swords that bend and stay bent when you cut something it should have easily cut" thats the product of a bad cut... not a bad sword...
spring steel is just more forgiving of those bad cuts
Creationsofmyown 2 years ago 2
Will it blend ? that is the question....

A shameful sword.
This is not katana.
It is a Chinese sword.
katana is a soul of the samurais.
I cannot prepare it into a woman and the child.
Can you be proud of Harley davidson made in China?
Can you be proud of Morgan made in China?
cozysakuma 3 years ago
Well that's great. Because there are no more Samurai, therefore, no one actually deserves an actual samurai sword.
wesleetu2 3 years ago 2
although you bring up a valid point all cheness is doing is providing is affordable swords so people can keep practicing japanese sword and keeping the art alive. I mean mny people that work at cheness are iaido practitioners including paul chen
iamfromjapan 3 years ago
shameful ??
Here is a sword that if taken back to the middle ages would more than impress. If this metal technology was discovered further back in time then what people consider as authentic would be different .. people are just stubborn or brainwashed and this slows moving forward.,
I have permanently bent enough swords to learn that spring steel has its merits.
TurtleOneKenobi 3 years ago 8
but you can atleast acknowledge that it doesnt hold nearly as nice an edge... dont get me wrong i love the 9260 series.. and they really are as durable as people say
Creationsofmyown 2 years ago 2
Wow..just how arrogant can a person be..? OH YA..just as arrogant as YOU. You do understand that the Chinese were making swords Before the Japanese, Right? And Katana the SOUL?? Sounds like sumbudys been watching to many Tom Cruise movies. DUDE, this is not 1850. And not to take this too too far, but YES, I suppose you could be proud of a Harley made in Chinaif you were Chinese. ASS
DmakAttack 3 years ago 2
Actually some of the techniques used in Japanese sword making was taken from the Chinese way...so I do no understand how some people say a "Chinese" Katana is inferior. The reason some Japanese Katanas cost so much is the availability of them and because you are paying for traditional methods of use. In other words you are buying a Ferrari which while well made is comparable in durability to a Toyota, which is more affordable to a broader base. Catch my drift?
Charliegone 3 years ago 4
more like a Lada than a Toyota to me ;)

its tiny, at least it looks like a bend on this clip its right at the tip of the blade
MrJesus666 4 years ago

is the second one like machine made?
i cant bend my Musashi Tora katana at all xD
SheepMasterTojo 4 years ago
the non spring might be a low end sword so it broke the crystal structure in the metal and lost its shape ps the musashi tora is practically invincible
iamfromjapan 4 years ago
thanks for the reinsurance xD
i understood the spring style
SheepMasterTojo 4 years ago 2
Oooohhhh that makes me feel giggly....
KendoSoldier88 4 years ago
the second sword...must have been aluminum...no form of steel or iron bends like that normally...
starshock01 4 years ago 3
Not only was the second sword not spring steel, it didn't even look like it was heat treated or tempered. You shouldn't be able to bend a sword that easily unless it was in its annealed state.
lucky7z 4 years ago 2
ok the sword that bend what steel was that
redsamuraiclan 4 years ago
9260 spring steel, the stuff is so strong a guy had to hit one of those swords with a hammer several times to break it, and this was after he tried to cut open an anvil with it!!!
Master293 4 years ago
no fare that you have a spring steel one..i need that T^T I have a katana thats not spring steel...waa!!! T^T
theguitarhero3 4 years ago
lol i actually bought it from my sensei but working at burger king i had a long time to save up but its really the best job a 14 year old can get
iamfromjapan 4 years ago
NOOB TALK all these ppl that knock the 9260 Cheness Katanas dont know nothing i bought the Kraze and as soon as i got it i started cutting four by four with it i would even cut dog bones clean in half so guess what if ever brought up with the situation to kill someone i think my Kraze will make even handmade Japanese Katanas look bad.
KingPun 4 years ago
yes i know how well does the kaze cut i herd it hold and edge better than my tenchi but it is not as durable as the tenchi some people call it the tatami killer
iamfromjapan 4 years ago
lol indeed it is my cousin has it my kraze is good but iv seen my cousin cut 5 mats at one time with that and it still looks brand new out the box.
KingPun 4 years ago
wow you cousin must have good form to get through 5 the most i can cut at once is a 5 roll with bamboo core but i still have difficulty with the cleanness of the cut
iamfromjapan 4 years ago
actually the non bo-hi version of the tenchi/shura has better edge retention than the kaze. but i still like the kaze
gunitgaurilla50 4 years ago
I own the kaze, crazy sharp sword, but you are right. Kaze does stay sharper longer though.
JesusFuckingChrist84 4 years ago
do you know if the kaze has better edge retention than the SGC katanas?
gunitgaurilla50 4 years ago
Hmm...I think it is about the same, about more in the direcetion of the SGC, because it is more durable and can allow for more abuse, but kaze is softer and is vulnerable to rolling and chipping more frequently. Sharpness=kaze Rolling and chipping less=SGC
JesusFuckingChrist84 4 years ago
wered you get the dog bones O.O?
starshock01 4 years ago
regardless flexibility, both're bad swords
Mitzrael19 4 years ago
have you ever used them my tenchi is my favorite sword and has no damage whatsoever after almost 2 years
iamfromjapan 4 years ago
how do you figure, i have kaze, getting tenchi, and are both excellent blades, you have no right too criticize
JesusFuckingChrist84 4 years ago
which one is which?? Is Cheness the one that flexes?
chowing0823 4 years ago
cheness is the one that flexes without losing shape and cracking on the edge
iamfromjapan 4 years ago
man i have bad grammer
iamfromjapan 5 years ago
too bad 9260 spring steel is pretty crappy stuff. the only good thing about it is that it flexes.
I prefer 1075 high carbon myself.
rulebook 5 years ago
really, why do people have too do this? it is great steel, get over yourself
JesusFuckingChrist84 4 years ago
what about cold steel? is it better that spring steel?
darkfallz007 5 years ago
cold steel is a company spring steel is a special king of carbon steel tempered so it is clexible if you take fencing the foils are spring steel it is really strong i have cut with my cousins cheness spring steel blade
