Your gfather may not have lied, as in he told you what he was told himself, which is a false account of what happened. In Belsen, as in all the other internment camps, there was no gassing of the Jews etc. Gas was for the sole purpose of de-lousing. Lice carried typhus which was a real massive problem. It was typhus which killed about 200-300,000 people in the camps.

The bodies your gfather found were killed by that, even though he was lied to also, by the higher ups.

Waffen SS = a big waste of material and resources, and all the manpower and material should have been used to strengthen and expand Heer units instead. Hitler craeted a disorganized mess, and leaders such as Speer and Guderian etc. were stifled in much of their attempts to rectify the disoraganization created by Hitler, Goring, etc.

At the start of the war the SS was a disaster. The Heer took Poland, Denmark, Norway, France. The Heer executed the early war Blitzkriegs. Only once the SS relaxed their stringent recruitment policies (You had to be tall, blonde or light haired with blue or green eyes and had to have firm National Socialist ideologies) was there an improvement in their abilities.

And they were more specialised in Armoured/Mechanized fighting units hence they received superior equipment than the Heer.

I know the SS used foreign nationals. By the end of the war, 60% of SS soldiers were non-Germans. I said in the early days of the war they tried to keep it all German, meeting tough selection criteria but that changed. And no. only the "Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler" started out as a bodyguard unit. The rest were all raised for combat. Leibstandarte is "bodyguard" in German after all.

i can show you my family bloodline on both sides back to the 1600's . my GF served in the 5th SS Panzergrenadier Division Wiking.

Im not german, but Norwegian...even better than German ;P

Wiking peaked at 19.000, and of those only 700 were Norwegians.

90% of the Wiking were non-scandinavians, mostly Germans.

Most Scandinavian with Wiking was probably its name and insignia.

Only 6.000 Norwegians volunteered for the SS. At most only 1.500 Norwegians served at same time on the Eastern Front.

12.000.000 germans served in the East, to put those very cracked up 6.000 into a perspective.

No Norwegian were ever decorated with the Knights Cross, unlike 8.000 germans and other axis.

Like pretending Norwegians fought for the Nazis on the Eastern Front in vast numbers and with huge military influence on any outcome.

Unlike the German conscripts who eventually served on the Eastern Front hardly with any leaves off, most Norwegians SS-volunteers only served for a 6 months period, untill they went back home and got high positions in the Quisling-regime and with the nazi police (Stapo) and nazi militia (Hirden), spending most of their war time harassing their common Norwegians, and doing all the dirty jobs for the Gestapo.

some of what your saying is correct.

My grandfather was Norwegian was a proud holder of the Iron Cross II. He is not listed since no one have approved using his name...his brother even changed identity after the war.

My GF best friend was KIA in 1943.

you dont know for sure if any Norwegians got the knights cross for sure..or not...or if they had deserved one. takk!

Why he should want call him self as Wehrmarcht after he served in SS? Joining to Elite ss divions was difficult. There was high Requirement for that. Backwarded germans served in Wehrmacht or in poor SS divisions like NORD only small % was decent to join in one of those 4 elite divisions.

And he had to prove his race back to 1600's and the training was hard.

And yes..he was a grenadier in the wehrmacht. Waffen-ss was under the wehrmacht.

I think you mix whermacht with the heer(army).

The Wehrmacht = Heer, Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine and the Waffen-SS. They were all controlled by the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht. But they each had their own Oberkommando.

When did he joined waffen ss? After 1940 there was no need to prove aryan birth, just 175 long, good teeth was criterion. for nordic volunteers.

he was in Finland when he was 16 in 1939. When he was 17 in 1940 he joined the WAffen-SS
