WOW, I just sort of discovered this incident, never having heard about it before. I served on the Trippe during a Med deployment in the 80's. Ouch, glad I wasn't there!
The old man at the time got sent to sit behind a desk in Hawaii for the remainder of his career while we got stuck going high and dry twice, and being the laughing stock of Group 4 in Newport. We were so ashamed to wear our ball caps with the ships name on it since other ships had to take on our committments. No love.
God this day sucked!!! First the burial at sea, then the collision, then we found out about the Iowa. At least we didnt have anybody die, but we did lose some shipmates that day. I remember the CO of Platte yelling over the radio "what kind of f#&*ing manuveur was that," and being on the signal bridge when PNC and I heard the Tactical Cmdr say "Im writing his detaching fitrep as we speak." We got stuck in Charleston for a month, then limped our broke ass home for 6 months in drydock.
@flags56 Larry, this is Nick Prelosky, former YN1. I remember being up there with PNC Smith when we heard the news. I'm a retired LT now, leaving on Guam working for S&K Sales.
No one on Trippe got hurt, a GM2 Gallager as I remember did fall out of his rack, bruised his knee, that was it. I got soaked, was one of the last 5 on port side to brace for shock. Thought I was dead man. We had just gotten out of the yards then had to go back in again. 3 Dry docks on one ship total between 86-90. One day I will have to dig up my damage pics and post those as well,

i was on 1075 this ship in 82-85 i heard about this around 90 when i was in the gulf didn't know if any one got hurt or not.
