Your missing the double bass pattern on the break between each verse line and the refrain.. Check out the live footage of the Who at the Marquee to hear this clearly.

It's not in the studio version. If I'm missing anything, it's the stick clicks (which Keith later replaced with his bass drums) as has been pointed out in a previous comment.

@babyshambler Yes, I think it's only on some live recordings like at the Marquee. It struck me when I realised what he was doing, because back in the 60s I assumed the two bass drums were just for show and some extra noise (there was no Heavy Metal then and no drummers showing their chops, except jazz and big band guys like Louis Bellson, Buddie Rich etc) Technique wasn't expected from "Pop" musicians who were looked down on. That all changed of course by the end of the 60s.

Keith changed that by 1966. His second bass drum was never '"for show" - he beat the hell out of it. He added the bass into the breaks on MG very early on, it was just not on the studio version. Have you seen the 'Amazing journey' documentary? In the extras, some fella talks about Keith's double bass style, and how he lead with his left foot - very unusual.
