duuude! I can't post a video response to this, but check out my video titled John scofeild - ? - it's stratus now that i see this. But check it out its pretty cool...if you get a chance. But anyway, you are nasty and quickly becoming one of my favorite new guitarists. :)
fantastic playing. great tone! your improvising is top class loads of interesting phrasing and intense technique. frank would be rocking out watching this!
@Undercurrentuk1 oh thanks man.. thats the lonestar with 2 cabs fitted with EV's... I loved that amp too! but it was way too expensive to ship it when I moved to the US. Frank is the man!
would love to... need to get a band together here in the states first.... thanks for the support! Actually would like to shoot a nice DVD - camcorder footage is kinda OK but hard to get a good balance
yeah - but it really depends what tempo you play it at... the original by John Coltrane was very fast and the changes pass by very quickly - not easy to improvise over!
Excuse my dullness, but if you use the Lonestar (head or combo?), why do you need another power amp?
Do you get your gain sound from the BB or from the amp? Or do you drive the amp with the BB?
Sound is great indeed!
I recently tried out a setup with my new GSP1101 (digitech) using a mixer/pa power amp/2x Bose 802 setup and I was AMAAAAZED at the sound I got with it. All modeling + flat amp. Terrific. Only upgrade remaining would be the AXE_FX.
I am using a combo, though I would have preferred a head. If I powered both speakers from the lonestar power amp I would get the same delay signal going through both speakers... hence not being in stereo.. I run the delay in the FX loop so I get the sound of the lonestar preamp through both sides... but run one output of the delay back into the effects return and the other output into the separate power amp input this saves me needing 2 lonestars really.
The distortion comes from the BB.... I never really liked amp distortion on the amps I have owned... always sounds too fuzzy to me... not smooth enough. Personal preference I guess... Heard great things about the Axe FX you mentioned.
That's really great! Never knew a gain sound that good could come from a pedal. Thing with me is the opposite: Never liked the distortion I heard from pedals thus far. But I always have a horrible time with distortion sounds. Mostly still play clean, although last saturday I finally had a bit of good luck with a more edgy sound.

ooo now theres a tough tune to solo over - I play over it from time to time but its not an easy one that's for sure!
nickkellie 2 years ago
It's that hard? Figured a fusion guy like you would have no problem..?

I see you're using the FG model?
Does it also have extremely low action?
How heavy strings you use?
Still got the Holdsworth axe?
drfretboard 2 years ago
hey man - I have the action fairly low... but could probably be lower. I use 9-42 d'addario.
Don't have the Holdsworth any longer.

Nice! And the gain sound?
drfretboard 2 years ago
BB preamp only

Hi Nick,
Very nice! What gear-setup did you use?
drfretboard 2 years ago
hey how are you alex? I used a mesa boogie lonestar classic.... ran in stereo with 2 cabs and a 2:fifty power amp
I split the signal with a UD stomp stereo delay set to different delay times for each side and a BB preamp.... pretty happy with the sound.
speak soon
Nick
