type in " msconfig" and go to the last tab and unceck all the programs u dont need or dont recognise (windows will turn on all critical programs)check the box that say hide all windows apps if ur unsure

windows disk cleanup and defragmenter programs are terrible, i use ccleaner from piriform and auslogics provide a great pc cleanup program that does everything for you. just type auslogics into google.

sigh, i have many external drives 2 500gb and 1 1tb, seriusly, i dont notice anything before or after fragmenting it that suggests searching, playing, running, copying pasteing, goes slower, not noticeable. many mp3 many movies many programs many smaller things iv gathered up on the years, the terabyte one is just backup, and the test was simple, no noticeable improvement, the only thing i can notice is when i hear the external drive activateing cus that takes a second to start the spin~

@thegadgetshow Dam old comment lol, it is a bit but I prefer confusing over control and more options. Rather than AVG which while simple (and free) is also a bit paranoid over files and tends to be more of an annoyance than anything else I find.

These suggestions are gimp. I can make computers run much faster by terminating those rogue processes using the task manager and by stopping unused services. I have also found an intentional internal delay that affects every program.

They have shown a terrible way of making your computer faster. the best way is to use the Microsoft Configuration Utility. (start > run > msconfig) and disable any unwanted startup programs. I do love this show, but they don't show any open source software, such as CCleaner. CCleaner cleans your registry and temp files out. Another good app is FreeRAM XP Pro. Use that and you will notice a significant difference in performance.

A tip for defragmenting your computer is to defrag in safe mode. If you defrag in regular mode, the computer will be using a lot of system files while trying to organize them and will not defrag as efficiently. To enter safe mode, press the F8 key repetitively on starting your system until a menu appears, then select safe mode with the arrow keys and press enter. The screen will look a little messy but don't worry, you can get back to regular mode after defragging by restarting the computer.

most people don't even know what it does, it's to do with malloc. memory allocation. pointers and tidying those up. no much point to it. if you want to speed up your comp buy new hardward. more ram, better cpu.

"better" is an relative term.... if you are into artistic software, design etc you will be better of with an apple. in general apple pc's have a better user interface are more stable and there is virtually no risk to catching a nasty virus.

everything that works on an windows pc works on an apple, ever heard of windows emulator? or dual boot system? apparently not...

now when it comes to general compatability your better of with a windows pc, windows is far from superior to apple OX though

I've had quite a few problems with AVG, one with it's uninstaller and with the actual protection i was getting i use Kaspersky now but i would recomend Avira AntiVir Classic as free anti-virus and Spy-Bot Search & Destory as anti spy-ware...

My ideas to speed up the PC: use linux (never needs defragging or protection) or use Nod32, SuperAntiSpyware and LookNStop. Re-installing from a RETAIL copy of XP/Vista will remove junk from the OEM version.

The computer tips here are a little basic - I'd expect them to come up with the best downloadable software (e.g. Perfectdisk 8 or Spyware Doctor). They need to offer better advice to more advanced users imo, instead of using the (poor) pre-installed windows software.
