At least one Loehle P-40 Kit has been built to look like a Hawker Hurricane. Don't know if it's flying. Recall that the owner (Grants Pass, Oregon) was modifying it back to a P-40 replica. The P-40 and P5151 Kit fuselage is a basic box construction that is profiled to look like that of the original fighter paricularly feathers, rudder and cowling profiles. The P-40 kit has more wing dihedral than the Hawker Hurricane which detracts from the Hurricane's authentic appearance.
@aussieflygal Actually I never said I was modifying it back to a P-40. It is staying as a Hawker Hurricane replica. I did say that I was redoing the nose to make it look closer to the Hurricane. Stock Loehle P-40 nose is too steep. If you look how Loehle did the wings and tail, their P-40 design is much closer to that of a hurricane when viewed from above the aircraft, in my opinion. Progress is coming along slowly, but surely. I want everything done right so I won't have to fix it later.
@mazdarodi Sorry about my misunderstanding re your rebuild and pleased that you are staying with the "Hurricane" replica. Looking forward to seeing your bird fly.
@aussieflygal That is quite alright. With a little luck I will have it flying next year. I hope everything is going well for you and your P-40. Any new flight videos?
@mazdarodi Started work on annual ready for spring flying though it's a tad chilly in the hangar. Have some video of the work being done. Will need editing to post.
The Loehle P-40's and P5151's fly just like an aircraft with three axis control. They are not fast and cruise at about 85 mph. They are quite responsive but not twitchy and a great pleasure to fly. They are not a short coupled tail draggers so the ground handling is quite benign.
The Loehle P-40 and P-5151 3/4 scale war-bird replicas are NOT high speed high performance aircraft. They have a Vne of 100 mph and perform well within their design parameters (Rotax 682, 2 cyl 2 stroke - 65 HP or Geo, 4 cyl-4 Stroke 80 HP). There is a Yahoo Group site for Loehle Aircraft builders, which has a mountain of information on these aircraft. If you are thinking of installing a more powerful engine to improve performance this is not the aircraft for you!!!
@aussieflygal i dont think they need to scream like their military counterparts, but from the videos i have seen (keep in mind i have not seen a flyby) they seem quite sluggish, almost like a kite wing plane. Would that assumption be correct?
Ive looked at a few different replica warbirds. One is the S-51, hard to find, and im afraid of the cost. If its anything like the Spitfire MK26B, its $130k. Well then i stumble across this plane. The only P40 i have found (My favorite warbird, grandfather flew one) and at the price of a used car. My only problem is the engine. I want a little more horses, at least a v6 sc. Has anyone boosted the powerplant in these? I know it would be listed as an experimental, but the others were that also.
Search for Loehle Aircraft on Google. They have kit price lists there. There are other kit suppliers too. Just browse Google - you'll find lots of information to make comparisons.
mikey73174 This was my first flight in a Loehle P40 P5151 design aircraft. The builder Bill Sjoberg had flown 150 hours in the bird and had proven it's airworthiness. Notwithstanding I still had a huge pucker factor when holding short for take-off in an unknown aircraft.
you guys are awesome

It would be easy to make a Hurricane out of that kit.

Personally, I wouldn't have ID'ed the aircraft as, "BS P-40".
Still, looks like it would be a kick to fly.
