Clever man, very patient listening to ideas from students. Best takeaway: dividends are like getting married, stock buybacks are like hooking up.

Another theory I heard about buybacks is that it's a form of backdoor compensation (for all employees, not just directors). I have heard of instances of companies pouring many millions into buybacks, whilst at the same time the number of shares in issue has actually shown a net increase.
