I only had to watch a few min of this vid. Sorry, but this is not natural alex. Yes, sometimes lab growns are set in fancy settings to enhance value. natural alex is never this large (it would be in a museum). natural alex is NOT that perfectly clear. I can see thermal growth lines (indication of lab) and the colors are too intense for a natural and alex does not change those colors. You have yourself a chorundum lab stone laced with trace elements. at the most a color change flourite.
after looking at the pictures, i would have to make the call, that it was a purple color change synthetic saphire. i have bough many in my travles through india...if u will have a refractive index reading done on it ...you will see it has a reading od 1.77- 1.76 which is the same as saphire...but it is a beautiful stone never the less !
The first synthetic Alexandrite was made in 1973. I have one, an heirloom from my Father, I am not sure how long he had it for but my Mother had it made for him in Peru. Whether it is real or fake I dont know although he wore that ring for a very long time many many years. It measures 12 * 10 * 4mm and is mounted in an 18 ct gold ring....it is definitely my Mona Lisa also....
10 years ago, I bought a gem from an Indian government shop in Madras now Chennai. Salesman told me it was an Alexandrite and it was a genuine stone. It's about 20 carats, with visible colour change, excellently cut and very beautiful, no inclusions but not expensive. Without testing who can tell it is genuine or synthetic.
@jabeydeera you can not buy a cheap natural alex that is 20 flippin carats. many fakes change colors labs add chorundum that is what makes it change. flourite also changes color and zultanite and the newly discovered masia blue garnet. but again not found in 20 ct stones.

As far as I know, the color change in alexandrite is from green to purple, which where two important colors in the russian history, so named it after Tsar Alexander. Hope this helps. Nevertheless nice stone.
LAB CREATED, BUT VERY GOOD STONE, Never seen an Alexandrite that goes that dark that was not Lab created, but it is a real Alex only grown in a lab, still worth a bundle. WOW ! AND THEY DID GROW IN LABS AS FAR BACK AS THE EARLY 1900;S
LAB CREATED, BUT VERY GOOD STONE, Never seen an Alexandrite that goes that dark that was not Lab created, but it is a real Alex only grown in a lab, still worth a bundle. WOW !
Natural alexandrites are expensive. If you got it cheap expect it to be a simulant or synthetic. If it was expensive let's hope it's natural. The only way to be certain is to have it tested. To me the gem looks like a simulant. but then I'm not a gemologist. To be sure you must let it be tested at a well known gem lab like GIA (Gemological Institute of America) or (AIGS) Asian Institute of Gemological Science.
However, whatever the gem is it's beautiful and adorable in it's own right.
There are large numbers of alexandrite simulants and synthetic versions. When I looked at the vid. I came to think of a book I have.
Here i a citation from the very excellent book, Gemmology third edition by Peter G. Read. Elsevier Ltd 2005, page 213. "...However, the colour of synthetic corundum (doped with vanadium) changes from an amethyst purple in filament light to a greyish blue in daylight and cannot be mistaken for the brownish-red to green colour change of genuine alexandrite."
hello...what a gorgeous piece...It has the looks of an antique piece. I want to say that in my opinion the stone is genuine. Can I ask you where in the world did you get this? Is it an heirloom piece from your family, or did you find it in a shop somewhere? I would NEVER EVER send it in the mail...my grandmother did that once, and her stone was actually removed out of her ring and replaced with something very inferior! Don't take any chances!
@winningsmile222 it is a beautiful ring. What are the markings, and do you know how old it is?? if the gem and the setting was made for the gem and never replaced and also it the ring is older than 1960's then the chances of it being real are quite possible. the ring I have with a large gem in it is dated 1850-1870's way before synthetic corundum or synthetic alexandrites were created. To see if it is real it has to go through several tests. Not just looking at it.
@winningsmile222 How old is your ring? does it have markings in it and if so wha are they?? If it is quite clean the chances are it is real. synthetics have tale tell inclusions. they look like rain going through it. what many people don't know is russian alexandrites are the cleanest stones to the eye.
@winningsmile222 DO you know how old your ring is? synthetics have certain inclusions in them which can look like rain streaks. Siberian alexandrites are a very clean stone. synthetic corundum alexandrites were created in 1961 and chatham created alexandrites in 1963 or there abouts. so if your ring is older than that chances are may be real.
I was with my gem by the 5th Gemologe! This one said, my gem, who is the same, is a synthetic Rubi! I don't believe that, I know, the gem is natural, and maybe there are only two of them in the world! Why must they be in a museum? And find a museum, who can buy this stone!!! I also wait from your message after Christmas! Greatings Katkan
Hi. Katkan68, Just to let you know.. We are back at square one. the gemologist tried to convince me , to let my ring go to another place to be examined.. He was supposed to do it in my presence , but he changed his mind after seeing this video.. Den
Thanks for message! You have to be careful. I don't trust in nobody, when it goes about my gem! If it's synthetic, or not! It is a very rare stone and let it be by this! Each specialist said a other think about, you feel what you have! Greatings K.
yours is sadly manufactured but it is tsill a true marvel like someone earlyer said a real gem that size would be in a museum or on a kings finger. anyway if that gold is 18ct then it is still very valuable i have a collection of alexandrite jewlry and none as big as yours oh well best wishes to you
Wow that is a beautiful stone! i would love to own one but the less expensive natural gem i found is $79.00. but its only 2mm big. i think the one you might have if it is natural could go up to $200 for the gem alone. have you looked up the Alexandrite gemstone history? it is very interesting. fake alexandrite gems have been circulating around since about 1906. so it may not be real. but dont take my word for it. it is still beautiful!
Hi Lore1n ! Can I ask where and when you bought your ring..and is it gold? I would suggest that if you want it appraised, ask that it be done , in your presence. Often they will say it will be sent somewhere else and it could be lost in the mail...don't take any chances. if it is lost, there's nothig you can do about it. Den
lol , I just discovered today I have a ring like that I have been wearing daily for about 5 years now. It looks about 3/4 of the size of yours and changes just under those colors .... wonder if I should have mine appraised :P
If people could see this ring in person, it is so beautiful.. Even if man made.. I went to many jewel stores and the alexandrite gems they have , even man made, are very small and the purple color almost inexistant.. Nowhere did I see such a ring as mine.. the cut is perfect , the colors , extraordinarily beautiful and design of the ring , sort of medieval,, like a kings crown with maille on the sides.. it is absolutely breathtaking..
It's rare to find a genuine alexandrite that size, I own alexandrite but much smaller. hold on to it, if you want to sell it go through a big auction house, or a gem show.
that alexandrite is man made. a natural alexandrite very rarely exceeds one carat in size, and the chances of ever seing a natural alexandrite are very slim and they command astrnomical prices in the market. a natural alexandrite only has 2 colours that it can change to. Green in daylight (bluey green, yellowy green) but it has to be a shade of green, anything else then the stone is not genuine. then in incandescent light it has to turn either a shade of purple or red.
to the King Tiger Tank.. thank you for your info.. the fact that this ring is 18 kt gold, I thought maybe it could be a genuine Alexandrite... but even so... I 've been to many jewelry stores and I never saw a ring such as mine... even if it is man made, I wonder what year , it could have been produced, where and by whom... ? the beauty of this ring is absolutely amazing.. thank you for your input. Den
thankyou. it's just that alexandrite rarely gets over a carat. it just looks too flawless and too big to be genuine, a genuine alexandrite that size would be in a museum.
hey anyway, accept a gem's beauty whether its real or fake, it is a lovely ring!
just had some nutter send me a messege saying that i am a beginner on gems lol, i am actually an expert. well never mind, thanyou for being nice about things! lol

@TheKingTigerTank Hi I lam new to this site but I am not new to alexandrites. I have one that is very large. Been seen by an antiquities dealer of New York and He was impressed with the size. It's amazing how some gemologists have said that even though it had no synthetic inclusions did'nt make it a real one.synthetics were created actually in the 196O's my ring is dated 1850-1870.
Hi.. thank you for your concern.. I measured the gem , without taking it off the ring.. The caliper shows 14.55mm and it weighs 0.3 grams. just thougt you would like to know. Den
What are the Jewelry saying? Is this a russian Chrysoberyll or an synthetic Spinell? I have also a stone like this. And nobody says the same of this Gem Specialysts!!! But i am sure, it is not synthetic.
Hi.Katkan.. I was told that this beautiful jewel was cut to perfection by a master jeweler. I have no idea if it is a genuine alexandrite or if it is a synthetic one. but the color change is extraordinary. the dispersion of the light is amazing,
I will not send it to be appraised as I fear it might get lost . the person who checked the cut of this jewel thought it was genuine but the mystery remains, which makes it even more desirable... I thought of selling it on ebay ,, but I am not totally decided in doing so.. an 18kt gold ring with a different alexandrite than mine was sold on ebay for over 3,000$ us last week. thank you for your comment...Den
