I have all 3 videos, watched 'em and when it was done compiling (2 1/2 hours later) it game me errors on both .deb packages and nothing installed that i could tell. I did it on my laptop, so if that's potentially a problem, I'll do it on my desktop. Any thoughts?
@OhHeyItsLou When I run it on my desktop (cause it has newer/faster hardware) I'll see if it has any errors, and if so, i'll capture it somehow, even if i have to take a picture lol
@OhHeyItsLou Well, I reinstalled the 2 .deb packages and the only error I got this time was "system program problem detected" (do you want to send a report?) Nothing like the other 2 or 3 I got. Would the same problems have come up from the first time if there really was a problem installing them?
@OhHeyItsLou ok, when i just ran it, only got one error, then i restarted and ran it again, and it said "Sorry, the package "bcmwl-kernel-source" failed to install or upgrade. And not only that, but my laptop runs slower than when i first installed linux.
@OhHeyItsLou I used Zorin OS 5.2 cause i figured any linux disto would be fine. I have others I can use. Someone on a forum somewhere said that openSuse was a good flavor for VMs so I thought about trying that one. The kernel I used from kernel.org was 3.2.8, and i'm not sure what base config you're talking about. I just followed the steps in your videos. I haven't ran it on my desktop yet, will do that today if I have time.
@OhHeyItsLou I just installed Mint 10 (same as in your video) and the default package installer was already set to GDebi Package Installer. I saved the files from when i had Zorin OS on here, saved them to my ext. drive, then I ran the 2 packages that compiled and it looks like all went well. Any thoughts? And will this whole process allow me to run my VMs a lot faster?
Thank you, good sir, for putting this up. I've been trying to get the right git's for the android kernel, but i didn't think about just using the linux 2.6 and simply compile it to arm.
I have a question though, I'm using 11.10, which uses the kernel 3.0, would this be bad to use in android? I'm already betting yes it is, but I'd love to hear more.
Feel free to make more videos about this kind of thing. =)
thank you, i did all you explain in the videos, now is compiling, hope every thing will go the right way....your explanation are very clear, good job!!
@TheSaproductionz Just install Ubuntu in a VM cygwin doesn't help you with the required packages needed to compile the kernel even if the packages would work in cygwin I'm fairly certain you would have to build them from source
Noticed you copy/pasted that file name when you were using tar. Juts wondering if you knew about Tab completion? Start typing the file or directory name, and then hit Tab. It automatically finishes typing it out for you :D
I have become a fulltime linux user as well since I got my android phone and when I started flashing linux distros on my pc it felt the same as when I was flashing roms .
Thanks so much for your hard work and continued development of ROMs & kernels in the Android community!! Awesome to see you're a full-time Linux user too. Check out Ultimate Edition (based on Ubuntu), it's fully tweaked out with tons of features and eye-candy.
Just flashed RR 2.4 on my D'Inc. Running like a champ. Cheers and thanks again.
Just curious, you said that you switched from OS X. Are you running linux on a mac, and if so, does it have one of the newer trackpads? I recently got a macbook pro from work, and I sorely miss linux, but trying to use it with the trackpad is a bit of a nightmare. Just wondering what your experience with this is.
@davefalke I actually sold my Mac I'm running Linux on a Sony Vaio laptop. The newest kernel 2.6.38 currently in RC has updated synaptic drivers that should allow for trackpad multi-touch.
Fantastic dude!!! Just one thing though, how do compile a 64bit kernel? Tried this method on my AMD dual-core running ubuntu 10.10 64bit and it keeps spitting out i386 kernels.
@OhHeyItsLou OOPs! my screw up. Turns out when i burned my Ubuntu iso's to disk, a32bit distro and a 64bit i mislabelled them and ended up installing the 32bit. Will get round to remedying this, the newly compiled kernel works sweet though.
Love you videos have pretty watched all of them!! would love to see you do some work/walkthrough on mint kde.

@OhHeyItsLou Yes definitely, I like using programs like Firefox Aurora, I may not be able to contribute money, so I at least contribute testing

I find the Ubuntu repos to be kinda bad sometimes for decent package versions. Fedora FTW (personally)
HTATigersBasketball 6 days ago
@HTATigersBasketball Fedora is definitely more bleeding edge.

Any other way to boot into this kernel?
Also how can I make a bootable ISO/IMG of the customized kernel?
prasannakarthik123 1 month ago
Compiling was fine.updated grub.
Getting the following when I boot into the kernel 3.1.8..
On the boot up screen,
Driver 'mdio-gpio is already registered,aborting..........
kernel panic-not syncing: VFS:unable to mount, root fs is on unknown-block(0,0).
Also capslock+scroll-lock keeps blinking intermittently in this boot screen.
How do I solve this boot issue?
prasannakarthik123 1 month ago
Will this work on Ubuntu 10.04/Linux Mint 9? Or only later versions?
TheZeroAssassin 1 month ago
3.1.8 kernel doesn't have 3.1.8 specific bfs patch .
It has 3.1 bfs patch . no issues?
prasannakarthik123 1 month ago
@prasannakarthik123 The 3.1 patch should work just fine.

The latest stable kernel to date is 2.6.37.1 -- does it matter that the patches are for 2.6.37 ?
dickieprime 1 year ago
@dickieprime You'll have to wait until the BFS and BFQ patches are updated for 2.6.37.1 or back port them the kernel won't build other wise.
