In response to Mr. Welch's inquiry, the reason new Japanese cars don't "smell like a new car" is because the Japanese manufacturers degas their plastics and vinyl at the factory. This is to prevent their paying customers from inhaling carcinogens, among other things.

Americans buy foreign cars because they are exotic. It started with German cars that were much more expensive to buy, but the rich bought them anyways because it was a luxury symbol. Japanese cars are the poor mans BMW. Sure they might be a little more reliable, and a little nicer inside, but is it really worth the 4-5K increase in price? Not really, its more about people wanting exotics, or pretend exotics to pretend they are rich and important.
Another point people don't seem to get is the trade deficit. If a foreign company gets revenue in US dollars, what do you think they do with it? Take it back to Japan? If they convert to YEN all it means someone else sold their YEN for dollars. At end of the day, these companies that got US dollars have to invest it back in the USA somehow. Actually my 2 cents aren't worthless if you take the time to educate yourself in current events. California was going to mandate a law that would only allow alternative fuel cars be used in Cal. to prevent anymore smog. GM developed a car, but oil companies "pressured" Cal. government to lift that law. I assure you gas hasn't been 99cents in Cal. since the 80's.
Thanks, you just proved my point. No such law was passed, and the EV1 would have been a major money loser. The average price of gas in 1998 was right around $1.00/gal. This country can't always adjust itself to what stupid California wants.
Exactly how do you know it would have been a money loser? Anyone who's ever heard of the Ev1 and about it's specs would say America needs this kind of car. I would like to have one. The only reason it didn't go into full production is because of what goes on behind closed doors with big oil companies and government. California is always 20 cents higher than anywhere else accept for rural areas which don't have a smog problem.
What's not to understand? The EV1 debuted when gas was $0.99 ($1.20 in California). The EV1 cost $80K to produce. The increased price of the car would never be made up with the savings on gas. Costs and technology from today might have changed it's viability, but in 1997 it was cost prohibitive.
Toyota came out with the Prius(hybrid) back in 2000. I saw the car when it first rolled to the dealership. If Toyota was willing to take a step out then that shows they're willing to spend money to take a lead. I'm sure it costed quite a bit. Look now though, everyone wants a Prius or a small car from foreign companies cause of the gas mileage. Even with gas being cheap right now, it'll go back up. My local area raised it 20 cents with no reason to cause it's still $46 a barrel.
On another note, I'd rather have a fuel efficient car just so I wouldn't have to buy those greedy SOB's oil as much. I do have a ford festiva(foreign made) that get 40 mpg. It's nice to drive for two weeks between fill ups. If everyone had a car that got that kind of gas mileage then gas would be .70 cents a gallon. Those greedy bastard's would be really happy then.

Buyers are now more sensitive in where their hard-earned money goes, and it should not come as a surprise when they choose the more proven, reliable option. In response to Mr. Welch's inquiry, the reason new Japanese cars don't "smell like a new car" is because the Japanese manufacturers degas their plastics and vinyl at the factory. This is to prevent their paying customers from inhaling carcinogens, among other things.
Looks to me like Mr. Welch needs to spend less time in his new Ford with the windows up and more time researching the products he's selling.

I have to say first off that I owna toyota. I love Chevy trucks and my grandfather worked for Ford for YEARS! The thing is, most Hondas and toyotas are now made in America! Yes some of the money does go back to Japan or whatever to the headquarters but most of it stays here to pay the AMERICAN and other nationalities that work HERE IN AMERICA to build the cars. Americans buy foreign cars because they are exotic. It started with German cars that were much more expensive to buy, but the rich bought them anyways because it was a luxury symbol. Another point people don't seem to get is the trade deficit. If a foreign company gets revenue in US dollars, what do you think they do with it? Take it back to Japan? If they convert to YEN all it means someone else sold their YEN for dollars. At end of the day, these companies that got US dollars have to invest it back in the USA somehow. Here is just my two cents. The auto industry has had many advancements, and bought rights to technology that can make a vehicle get 50 miles per gallon and locked it away. Just like how the Ev1 turned out to be successful with 300 miles between charges but was killed. So why should those thieves get our tax money just so we can buy their product? Actually my 2 cents aren't worthless if you take the time to educate yourself in current events. California was going to mandate a law that would only allow alternative fuel cars be used in Cal. to prevent anymore smog. GM developed a car, but oil companies "pressured" Cal. government to lift that law. I assure you gas hasn't been 99cents in Cal. since the 80's.

The only reason it didn't go into full production is because of what goes on behind closed doors with big oil companies and government. What's not to understand? The EV1 debuted when gas was $0.99 ($1.20 in California). The EV1 cost $80K to produce. The increased price of the car would never be made up with the savings on gas. Costs and technology from today might have changed it's viability, but in 1997 it was cost prohibitive.

Toyota came out with the Prius(hybrid) back in 2000. I saw the car when it first rolled to the dealership. If Toyota was willing to take a step out then that shows they're willing to spend money to take a lead. I'm sure it costed quite a bit. Look now though, everyone wants a Prius or a small car from foreign companies cause of the gas mileage. Even with gas being cheap right now, it'll go back up. My local area raised it 20 cents with no reason to cause it's still $46 a barrel.

On another note, I'd rather have a fuel efficient car just so I wouldn't have to buy those greedy SOB's oil as much. I do have a ford festiva(foreign made) that get 40 mpg. It's nice to drive for two weeks between fill ups. If everyone had a car that got that kind of gas mileage then gas would be .70 cents a gallon. Those greedy bastard's would be really happy then.

Could someone teach me what 'rice ready' means?
I know he uses the words in a negative way, but I can't tell what it exactly means...did he rhyme it with 'race ready'?...why rice?..

People dont buy american cars because american cars aren't made as well as foreign. My care is a 94'~ Toyota Corolla!!!!! 94'!!! You don't see 94' GM or Ford cars driving around! WHY??? because they are broken down in the junk yard! That's what they're good at, breaking down, stuff always breaking so you have to buy PARTS! Our auto industry needs to downsize, the losers need to be bought out.

So because I drive a Toyota I am unAmerican? Have mercy. The two previous cars I had were Fords and I liked them BUT I had trouble with them on and off. I still love Fords but I am glad to have my Toyota and by the way back in the 70's when the recession was pretty bad, had a Toyota then also. American cars were not selling well then either. This man has a stupid, racist add, I don't know why that would cause anyone to do business with him? Go figure?

Wal Mart = Value products
Import cars (Toyota/Honda) = Bang for the buck in terms of reliability/quality.
At times like this, we have the right to choose the more value-sensible option. Buyers are now more sensitive in where their hard-earned money goes, and it should not come as a surprise when they choose the more proven, reliable option. I'm not saying that the Big 3 is offering unreliable cars. However, that IS the image that is stuck in the minds of the average car consumer.

I am a FORD guy, I was raised in a Ford home and my Father drives a Ford right now. Ford is the only Domestic product I would buy. However I would never even stop at this mans dealership, because, A)I am Japanese so he's probably pissed at me anyways. B)I could never support a man with so much ingnorance.
