NASA isn't stupid ffs. It cost $500 to make pictures from a balloon, yes very clever. But im afraid what nasa does is a little more complex. I don't see any amateur shooting tons of cargo into orbit, walk on the moon, driving around on mars, or taking a satellite to jupiter. Besides, the thing isn't even close to "space". It hangs around 30 km while real space starts around 100km.

This is cool & cheap, but it's not "space." Space is 100+ km altitude. The importance of these stratospheric balloon flights is the demonstration that you don't have to be a government to do such things. After WWII, most everybody got 'stuck' with the BIG & EXPENSIVE way of thinking about space. BUT modern microelectronics are so small, reliable & inexpensive that we can now do tiny & cheap, and put our own micro-payloads into space - even beyond Earth orbit. Just search "Microlaunchers".

The Russians also used grease pens with PVC slates. The Fisher space pen was developed in 1965 at a cost of around $1 million, as it had to function in a wide range of pressures and temperatures. The main reason for developing the space pen was because lead pencils are combustible and can create a hazard if the lead breaks.

Also, NASA didn't invest $1 million, it was the fisher pen company and NASA only became involved when they dreamed up the space pen, and then sold it to NASA.
Nasa ordered 400 space pens, and russia ordered 100 pens and 1000 cartridges.

A private company invested up to 1 million of their own dollars and once the pen was completed, NASA bought 400 of them for 6 dollars a piece.
