@Morphinestockbroker Cheers for that, saw an article last week in the local rag about 5x5 tour ,it said nothing about it being the first 5 albums.Cant see them repeating that again.

@bodthetim Beautifully said. The Sons and Fascination/Sister feelings call albums will be 30 years old in a couple of weeks time - they were released in Sep 1981. I still listen to this CD now - just wonderful music or me. Bearhug. Tx
I bought the cassette of this album at the tender age of 15 at Gateshead Metro Centre. Cost me a fiver - the date would have cost more if I turned up. I fancied Forbes' bass more.
So glad my brother is ten in a half years older than me.....he was/is my influence for listening to the greatest decade of music! I was born in '83 and SM is one of the first bands I can remember listening to. I am stuck in the 80's (and late 70's) when it comes to music...you just cant beat that particular time in music. Wonderful bands! Love SM ALWAYS!<3
I met Jim Kerr at a show in Ann Arbor Michigan. He was full of positive energy and not a pretentious bone in his body! He asked what row we were sitting and he came out on stage and gave us a high five! A truly class act, along with a great lyricist, backed by a brilliant band! Even Once Upon A Time, if you can stomach well crafted pop.
For just one ,moment in time, I want to walk where it is... Ifelt like that when I was 15 and heard this first and I still feel like that now, Its so hypnotic and powerful, All hail the MInds!
@DAVEYBOND007 Yes - at the time of "Empires and Dance" they cited "Chic" as a band they listened to a lot. listen to the bass playing in "The American" - very funky. Thank you Derek Forbes (o;
@bcjaliu The whole album screams krautrock to me... but it isn't quite krautrock... it isn't new wave either... certainly isn't synthpop.... it's funk but it obviously isn't.... Sons & Fascination is one of the hardest albums to pigeon hole I've come across. And that itself is what makes it brilliant.
@Hwral I'm not really familiar with those albums; so are you saying that they contain songs better than "Promised you a miracle"? I find that hard to believe!
What shall I say? Everyone has their own favourite songs and albums. Get that combo "S&F"/"SFC", familiarize yourself with the songs and you will be surprised by their power, drive and energy.
No matter what anyone thinks of Simple Minds now, In Trance as Mission is in their set list on their current tour - and it sounds just as wonderful as it did back in the 80's.
If you haven't already, you MUST get Sons of Fascination/Sister Feelings Call. Two of their best. You can get it used on ebay for a few bucks, and new for about $35. I just checked for ye :p. I highly recommend it.
totaly agree with this post im allso obsessed with the minds music allways have been so. even more so as im getting older best live band imo just seem them again for the 5th time and they were amazing as ever
I sort of know where you are coming from, John. My fellow got their new album a while back, and it made me miss the OLD old minds, so I've been listening to the old stuff like mad.
@johndgn for some reason I have been playing this and League of Nations and Hunter and the Hunted over and over the past few weeks, so it's a healthy obsession :) Have you heard the live version of this done last year? Brilliant.
*note, I am a fan of albums and songs after Sparkle in the Rain so I have also been playing Hypnotised over and over.
Definitely not the age, dear John - I am an ´82 model with full body kit and even to me it is like pure love to the Minds, although my whole company uses to deal with electronic music and that hip hop crap! The Simple Minds at their absolute top, it all went down down down after the Sparkle in the Rain album!
@dietcapsules disagree everything before SITR is better but they are still good and they do make the occasional gem such as Stay Visible, just my view, but at least they are still rocking and touring
@johndgn My friend I think it's because you are more than aware that this is pure class? The modern era cannot get near to this . What we have now is mass produced media friendly bullshit. Greeting's from Aberdeen, Scotland my immaculate friend.
@johndgn I'm goin on 47...and drawn back to the minds as well...it was a life changing band and music back then for me. Who can ever forget such amazing music. Glad to know I am not alone, and there is a whole world of people out there who appreciate the good old days with SM! Keep it alive baby!!
@johndgn Fact mate. Still listen to this on vinyl. Even though I am 44 and seriously into metal (and tons of other stuff) the alt scene of the eighties was without doubt an era that will NEVER EVER be rivalled for depth of feeling.
the reason simple minds dont get the recognision they deserve is simply they were way ahead of their time.if they re-released all this stuff now , well who knows...........
Sons And Fascination is the BEST album by Simple Minds, closely followed by New Gold Dream.....never get sick of hearing those albums they are two of the best British albums ever made.
Somehow I ended up being friends with Mike Ogletree on myspace. He told me this is one his favorite SM tracks also. Mine too from THIS album. Along with 70 Cities,20th Century Promise Land and Wonderful In Young Life. Careful In Career is a GREAT song to workout to,as is Boys From Brazil! Lol!
wow! In dec 1981 I was 12 years old and rented this cassette out of the library (I had heard "Love Song" on the radio a while before and liked it - although it only got to no.47 inthe charts) This cassette grew on me....eventually when I got a CD player in 1989 - this was the frist CD I bought. The whole album is beautifully played - Simple Minds at their peak (o; I just love this album. Timeless memories for me (o;
@hairycub69 Spot on hairycub, it was not the first CD I ever brought but I got the SNF and SFC double CD as soon as Virgin released it in the late 80's. Timeless and this is one of the best tracks - even better they play it on their current tour
I saw Simple Minds in 1981 (or 82?), I was 12, my dad took me to see them at Mainstreet (Ak, NZ). I still love this early stuff -- timeless for me too :)
shit these guys were the business, no one was this original or had the balls to do this. When the lyrics started making sense they lost something in my humble opinion
Yes, it all changed when the lyrics started making sense. (Same with R.E.M., in the late 90s lyric sheets appeared on their albums, the lyrics were more "substantial" but some of the magic was gone.)
My first Simple Minds album was New Gold Dream. It did have a lyric sheet, but it just served the purpose of proving you had heard correctly and Colours Fly And Catherine Wheel made bugger-all sense. And that was great. Part of the magic.
There's very little music that matches the opening 45 seconds of this song for grandeur. MacNeil's keyboard chords are especially brilliant, although it's Forbes' bass line I'll always remember the song for. Listen for how each instrument glides in and builds on the previous ones, before that controlled baritone voice seals the deal. Jesus! These guys were SO SO SO good, and this is one of their best four or five songs.
Thanks grayham37 ... great to find this on YouTube. I bought this album because of Love Song and adore every single track ... the whole album is fabulous journey. When I bought it on CD many years later I was glad that Sister Feelings Call was included. I always loved The American and Theme for Great Cities.
My all time favourite song of theirs. Mind you I lost interest in them after New Gold Dream. I was so disappointed when they wanted to be U2 on Once Upon a Time.
Can anyone help me with this one? Who started this myth that The Minds decided one day to "copy" u2? As I have said before,if there was any copying going on it came from the u2 camp.Simple Minds were, and still are the innovators!
It was around this time U2 and Simple Minds were using the same producer (Steve Lillywhite) who had a unique mixing style, big sound ,heavy drum track etc. this is probably why the 2 bands sounded so similar
I just dont get this one.Which u2 album has the same sound as Once upon a time? There is no comparison in my eyes.If anyone was doing the copying it was u2 with unforgettable fire ripping off New Gold Dream!
i totally agree with you ! they have always had a different sound and for me simple minds music is magical and has that space where the music just grows and grows ! simple minds have always made better a wall of sound !!
I Have never heard Silent Running before I like what Ive found here on youtube the music especially keyboard sound like SM but singer i reckon sounds like Julian Cope from The Teardrop Explodes
No, I think when Simple Minds went commercial they began to sound suspiciously similar to U2- the Big, Passion-fueled Rock sound.
Their early arty stuff (everything up to New Gold Dream) was brilliant and unique, though. Nobody can take that away from them, no matter how uneven they've been since.
i agree its hard to tell a band wot to do ,duran were lucky they were able to change gradually, but simple minds just ditched their sound after new gold dream to sparkle but times did change and sparkle spawned some great songs.great songs but the albums died.
I agree with the latter part of your comment, but I guess it's like criticising someone for not living to 185 years of age. There is no such thing as permanent excellence....well, not in this world......I'm just thankful for what we did get from the 'minds' early on.
back in 85,I first heard of this band, and they instantly became my favourite band.I saw them the following year, and I'll always remember it as one of the greatest times I ever had.
I remember hearing this when I was 17 on a very frosty night on my walkman. The sky was filled with stars and it just fitted perfectly.Whenever I hear it Im always reminded of how I felt so alive with my whole life ahead of me at that time.Great atmospheric song.
Sons and Fascination / Sister Feeling Call has to be one of the most under-rated albums of the 80s. Every track unique, and ground-breaking. I feel this was the last of their experimentation, and the following album marked a change of direction, a distillation of what they had learned by experimenting in the service of pop songs. It worked well: New Gold Dream was a magnum opus, but the last real Minds album.
