The WWF in 2001 was EPIC! For some reason the WWF in 2001 just had a atmosphere about it every time i watched a RAW, SMACKDOWN or PPV. The in ring work in 2001 was at it's peak and a lot of funny things happened that year too. 1995 to early 2002 was the most popular years in wrestling but for me 2001 stands out the most in that BOOM period in wrestling. 2001 was a crazy year and it went by SO FAST and the 9/11 attacks happened in September of that year also. Michael Jackson came back too.
This is back when the WWE was ENTERTAINING. Back in the day you already knew a PPV was gonna be AMAZING. Back then i use to order PPV's without second thought because i didn't have to worry about if the PPV was gonna be good or not. These days you can't just throw money around on PPV's anymore and especially with the way the economy is fucked up right now. I just stopped watching the WWE 2 weeks ago because the same thing happens every week, all they do now is argue over a title match.
imagine how that must have been for the audience! i was round 6 at the time and i remember this, thinkin i saw the man on a different company a week ago lol
i have zero proof of this but i believe Vince Mcmahon's plan was for the invasion to start near the end of 2001 cuz by then the TOP WCW stars could be signed and a legit invasion could happen but because of injuries to HHH, Benoit, Austins neck problems and the rock potentially leaving for movies forced him to start the invasion to early and thus the Top Wcw stars came shortly after the failed invasion. This is just my opinion.
@TheWill1225 That could be true since Vince wanted Eric Bischoff in there as well but he couldn't be there til later in the year or the year after (which he was).
The reason the so called "invasion" failed was that Vince couldnt sign ANY of the WCW's top talent. the people from WCW that showed up in WWF initially were 2nd rate wrestlers wrestlers. No Goldberg, Flair, Sting, Hall, Nash...none of them till later and then it was to late. The WWF totally failed on this.
they could do this again in a similar way! have booker return to wwe. make no news of it. keep it quiet. Then have him attack a high player such as john cena or something. out of the crowd. awesome
You know it was used to be my favorite wrestler Booker T in 1996 from WCW when i started to watch wrestling(WCW Monday Night Nitro), but then i stop watching WCW in 1999, so i can go head to watch WWF(SmackDown!-which it was debuted in Thursday, August 26,1999). Now my first favorite wrestler is The Rock in 1999 from WWF(WWE) when i started watching WWF from 10 yrs. ago (1999). But still Booker T is my favorite wrestler list.
God what could have been, Vince screwed up the Invasion storyline so badly. Wished they went through with the idea of having a WWE and WCW Brand like RAW and Smackdown.
Stone Cold got fractured bones in his hand from that "border toss" like sidewalk slam Booker hit. I think that's why he got buried when he first started in that WWF/E combined with Buff Bagwell wrestling a negative 5 star match with him on RAW.
Booker and DDP were the only notable people in the WCW side of the Alliance they had people like Chuck Palumbo, Chavo Guerrero and The Hurricane. Then for whatever reason they bring in Ric Flair right after the angle ended and the nWo a few months later, when they could have definatly made it more interesting.
tell me many reasons why WCW was better? I was so sick of seeing old veterans in WCW taken over... This is why u see wrestlers like stone cold & the rock who started out young and revolutionized WWF. Today WWE still does it... and they make new wrestlers famous and what did WCW do... they kissed Hogan's ass cus they knew that's the only way to get ratings. WWF did it the way any good business man would do... They pushed their young talent! Now tell me what made WCW better than WWF?
...I'm a long time WWF fan but what the fuck are you talking about? WWE hasn't been making new wrestlers famous. They have been over using old talent and pushing new ones till the point where it is redundant on how much they win. Case in point: John Cena.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
John Cena Randy Orton Dolph Ziggler Evan Bourne Brian Kendrick Kofi Kingston R- Truth Primo Legacy Harts All The Divas they are all new talent you don't see rock austin rikishi there and if u want to see old talent like booker angle dudleys steiner jarrett shane douglas taz etc. where do u look? TNGAY thankyou and goodnight
At the time of the sale wwf was kicking wcw's ass but it wasnt always that way wwf was a poorer product for a long time... sure they still had good wrestlers but when the nwo thing started wwf looked way out of touch...
It was Aol that ended wcw not wwf.. ending the tv deal during the time warner-aol merger killed the product... no tv = no ppv buys..
wcw was still gettin better ratings than TNA, the current ecw and probably smackdown now when it was at its worst..
I liked both, but wwf had more interesting characters and was more fun to watch. WCW ran the NWO garbage in the ground. WWF at least had a new major star every once in a while.
But did WCW put WWF out of business? No they didn't. WWF put WCW out of business last time I checked. ALMOST putting WWF out of business doesn't count. The wwf REALLY (not almost) WCW out of business.
WWF WASNT planning to buy WCW but Time Warner Channel was begging Vince to buy it so he did cos vince was getting upset losing the monday night ratings war.... if WCW/WWE teamed up, then wrestling today will be HUGE!
Vince did not have to buy WCW though. Ever since January 4th, 1999, he had been CRUSHING them in ratings. Even if he wouldn't of bought WCW, WWF would of still kicked the shit out of them in ratings every week. They had been doing in for 3 straight years when Vince bought them out.
Booker was originally the face here, but then shortly after this the roles were switched. Booker went heel and the WWF were the faces along with Austin (untill he defected to the Alliance)
The thing is booker t and the rest didn't jump ship, for some reason aol time warner re-signed booker to a 7 year deal right before he won the u.s. championship before WWE purchased WCW. him and DDP just signed contract exstension as opposed to flair, sting, scott stiener, buff bagwell, and lex luger let thier contracts expire to avoid the transfer and they knew that wwe would misuse the talent and make them re earn everthing that they have already earned. goldberg bought out his contract.
you know shit gets exciting when someone recognizable jumps out of the audience and there are people in waves quickly rising out of there seats, going nuts.
wwe always has are yaw fucking BLIND!!! Yea stone cold, the rock, taker, hhh where main eventers but do u know y...CAUSE THEY SOLD T-SHIRTS OR PEOPLE WOULD BUY PPVS TO SEE THEM GET THERE ASS KICKED!!
WWE ruined what they had in Booker T by making him pay dues in WWE when he already paid dues in WCW. This why Vince is not as good a businessman as he thinks. He took a petty beef with WCW after he won and let it ruin his product. He could have pushed Booker and made him a huge face and he'd possibly still be a billionaire.
it sucks for poor vince I read in forbes about 3 weeks ago the poor guy is only got about 620 million and his poor daughter is just spitting out kids left and right how are they going to be supported
I remember how EXCITED i was when this happened....i thought WCW succesfully invaded WWF to start a series war!! Little did i think the WWF actually bought them out....damn....i miss the old Monday night wars
Hahaha....yeah, his adrenaline got the better of him. Can't really blame him though...this storyline was epic. It's just not something that can really be done again.
if it wasn't for booker t and diamond dallas page, they would never have went with this damn angle. how could you do an invasion with chuck palumbo, hurricane helms and chavo guerrero? lol it was a waste
and vince could have gotten sting of all people but sting was smart and saw how they were treating booker and ddp. booker got mocked by the rock and a midget version of himself and the undertaker (and his then wife!) squashed ddp! thank god sting didn't jeopardize his career! but this whole thing could have been handled so much better. it was cool wondering who would show up next but it was just chuck palumbo and kroniK haha
Well, and there were a lot of other things they could have done. Sting would have been great, but they waited until the angle was over to bring in Ric Flair? Doesn't make sense. If Goldberg hadn't been hurt, he could have made for some interesting stories as well....no Rey Mysterio, no Scott Steiner, etc. Lots of opportunities missed, but, kudos to them for still making it one of the better storylines I've ever seen. A little lacking, but WAY better than anything they give us now.
Instead of joining the alliance Booker T should have joined WWF and RVD I think he was m,ent to be face but Shane fucked that up by buying WCW in the storyline.

Interesting Trivia: At the time this event took place, he was only a 4 time champion. He became a 5 time champ after beating Kurt Angle and regained the WCW title.
Look at the fan reaction, why they made Booker heel during that time if beyond me... Also wrestling is garbage nowadays I can't watch it... I think Vince let the fact he wanted to destroy the WCW brand get on the way of business they could've done the whole Invasion thing so much better...
and they still use that POS gimmick in TNA every now and then. i say now and then because he does talk like he normally did before that gimmick when he gets serious. but i did appreciate that legends belt he came out with. i think that belt should only be fought between guys that's been in the industry for YEARS, not just a few.
He bust his ass for WWE and they give him the King Booker gimmick, Thats some appreciation, no wonder he bailed out on them. I still enjoy WWE but they need to learn how to use their stars better other than Cena and Batista.
i totally agree john cena is phas been pushed too much .... and IMO he's not a good wrestler either all of his matches are structured the same .... and as for the king booker gimmick ...*shudders* ,to think of all the times i wanted to punch sharmell when she was on the mic shouting *KING BOOKER* again and again and again and again was so aggravating lol
you mean the king booker gimmick he's still using in TNA? the king booker gimmick where he won the world championship for the sixth time in WWE? Don't be a smark man. it's not a good look.
People need to stop deriding the king booker gimmick. Not only was it entertaining, it got him the world title, complete with THE dream role of a heated heel persona that fans actually boo. In a day now where the best heel gets more cheers than faces (Edge and Orton), that's a lost art
i know i think the greater show is WWE right now than TNA but man its messed up u cant compare it to the old days when there was the rock stone cold hulk hogan mankind legend undertaker masked kane and so much more i mean WWF was great but sadly now they worry too much bout storylines and the writers are doing there job ok but not like WWF but it was ok in 06 then when it came to 08 it started to SUCK

and vince could have gotten sting of all people but sting was smart and saw how they were treating booker and ddp. booker got mocked by the rock and a midget version of himself and the undertaker (and his then wife!) squashed ddp! thank god sting didn't jeopardize his career! but this whole thing could have been handled so much better. it was cool wondering who would show up next but it was just chuck palumbo and kroniK haha
0Mike0Banks0 2 years ago 7
Well, and there were a lot of other things they could have done. Sting would have been great, but they waited until the angle was over to bring in Ric Flair? Doesn't make sense. If Goldberg hadn't been hurt, he could have made for some interesting stories as well....no Rey Mysterio, no Scott Steiner, etc. Lots of opportunities missed, but, kudos to them for still making it one of the better storylines I've ever seen. A little lacking, but WAY better than anything they give us now.

Damn man, Austin got his ass smoked by Booker!
Howell1236 2 years ago 3
Instead of joining the alliance Booker T should have joined WWF and RVD I think he was m,ent to be face but Shane fucked that up by buying WCW in the storyline.

cashmoney510 3 years ago 3
Technically he's a six time Champ.
wSaKy 3 years ago
That's correct.
Interesting Trivia: At the time this event took place, he was only a 4 time champion. He became a 5 time champ after beating Kurt Angle and regained the WCW title.
ilikethecoke 3 years ago 3
Wyclef Jean used to be WCW champion? I never knew this.

ruedalex93 3 years ago
haha jr was about 2 say wwe champion
ruedalex93 3 years ago
they had no idea bout wwf was going to change wwe at that time so at that time it meant nothing
322016 3 years ago
Look at the fan reaction, why they made Booker heel during that time if beyond me... Also wrestling is garbage nowadays I can't watch it... I think Vince let the fact he wanted to destroy the WCW brand get on the way of business they could've done the whole Invasion thing so much better...

These were the days where WWE was actually entertaining.

Bald bitch wouldn't sell the axe kick.
Goukimessatsu2 3 years ago 2
I know right. Stone cold never sold anything. too old and not athetic enough...go see a Rock vs. anyone match..He sold every move!
ShatteredHawk 3 years ago 7
hahaha Rock did sell every move
he made Hurricane look bigger than he really was
but he did oversell half the time like with Stone Cold's Stunner
backflips arent needed
toberaw 3 years ago 2
Isnt that what makes a good match? Showing how powerful his move is?
ShatteredHawk 3 years ago
not in my opinion
a good match should show skill and back to back action
if he has a powerful move that doesnt make it a good match
toberaw 3 years ago
whats the wwcw champion

back when booker t isnt KING BOOKAH! -_-
and they still use that POS gimmick in TNA every now and then. i say now and then because he does talk like he normally did before that gimmick when he gets serious. but i did appreciate that legends belt he came out with. i think that belt should only be fought between guys that's been in the industry for YEARS, not just a few.
ironman711 3 years ago 2
see how wcw was still cheered then?
travisrosenau 3 years ago 3
He bust his ass for WWE and they give him the King Booker gimmick, Thats some appreciation, no wonder he bailed out on them. I still enjoy WWE but they need to learn how to use their stars better other than Cena and Batista.
AlterEgo2k8 3 years ago 3
i totally agree john cena is phas been pushed too much .... and IMO he's not a good wrestler either all of his matches are structured the same .... and as for the king booker gimmick ...*shudders* ,to think of all the times i wanted to punch sharmell when she was on the mic shouting *KING BOOKER* again and again and again and again was so aggravating lol
baldyaldanos 3 years ago
you mean the king booker gimmick he's still using in TNA? the king booker gimmick where he won the world championship for the sixth time in WWE? Don't be a smark man. it's not a good look.
pvegeta 3 years ago
i agree! King booker the worst gimmick ever!
coreydec 3 years ago
People need to stop deriding the king booker gimmick. Not only was it entertaining, it got him the world title, complete with THE dream role of a heated heel persona that fans actually boo. In a day now where the best heel gets more cheers than faces (Edge and Orton), that's a lost art
HeyArnoldsspleen 3 years ago
you cant blame it on the heels
the heels are doing a good job
but the faces arent
Cena agrees with everything Vince says and look where that got him hes 50/50 now (even in Boston)
toberaw 3 years ago 2
i know i think the greater show is WWE right now than TNA but man its messed up u cant compare it to the old days when there was the rock stone cold hulk hogan mankind legend undertaker masked kane and so much more i mean WWF was great but sadly now they worry too much bout storylines and the writers are doing there job ok but not like WWF but it was ok in 06 then when it came to 08 it started to SUCK
322016 3 years ago
ok, wait so, the ppl that vince doesn't like, r made heels, and the nice ppl r made faces?
