There was actually a Friendship between Mozart and Salieri where they actually liked eachother, and Mozart's second son learned music from Salieri, doesn't sound like something enemies would do.
Definitly a great opera, but in my opinion Harnoncournts interpretation is
without soul, his Mozart interpretations are better. On this Cd he also recorded
The Schauspieldirektor and the interpretation is much better. I have heard that Hrnoncournt only wanted to prove Mozart is better than Salieri, and because of that the interpretation of "Prima la musica" is borring, but infact Salieris composition is better than Mozarts.
Why are we arguing about an excellent-on-its-own, but otherwise purely fictional, movie, when we could just be enjoying the neglected music of Mozart's friend and less-performed contemporary?
Thank you! Salieri's XXVI Variations on La Follia is a great, under appreciated masterpiece. Actually quite modern. The best recording of it ever done was The London Symphony under Zoltan Pesko in 1978. I have a cassette of it someplace, but I have never see it on disk.
Are some people here seriously quoting 'Amadeus' as a reliable source?
Salieri was a wonderful composer. Yes, he now is remembered in Mozart's shadow, but during his time we was one of the most regarded composers and had great respect for Mozart.
What this clip proves is that Salieri was a composer who could write opera buffa as well as anyone. It was, after all, this opera that was more popular than Mozart's Impressario in a head-to-head competition in 1786.
I love the syncopated tutti reinforcement in the main exposition, and the mockingly feminine satirical spirit and poignant rythm of the second theme. Salieri was a very intelligent man, well read for his time and a great friend and protector of all the races
If Holloywood had an artist like Salieri they would elevate him to God status, but since Salieri was an Italian from Legnano, oh my god cant have that!
very very beautiful .... BUT SIMPLE compared to Mozart's music , and that's why he hated Mozart so much cos Mozart's music was beyond his time , and you can see that obviously in the movie AMADEUS
@anasalwash, The play and movie, Amadeus was FICTION based on real characters and that's all. There is no evidence that there was anything but well-deserved, mutual respect between these two. Perhaps genius is just matter of degrees when their works are compared; remember the best of salieri was probably better than the "pretty good" of Mozart (if there is such a thing!)
@anasalwash you are an idiot for mentioning Amadeus. Amadeus is a fictional film based on real characters. With a terrible American actor who played Mozart, disrespectful if you ask me. The only thing that is good about that film is it brought Salieri's music back into the popular domain...plus. You say it is simple compared to Mozart, I would like to know what you mean there...some Chopin night songs are 'simple' so where does he stand?
@MrCosmoe Assolutamente hai ragione.

See, Salierei was just a good a Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, but the only problem is that Mozart's music was much more reconized in Europe.
