and women sitting by men does not necessarily mean equality! in Islam segregation in the mosque is to allow ppl to concentrate on the religious matters presented in the khutba and not to be distracted while the sermon is going on. plus the nature of the physical practice in Muslim prayer, no man would not be distracted by a woman in front of him bowing down, makes sense to segragate.
