Yngwie is overrated. Its like you hear the same sweeps, licks etc all the time from him. Its boring. Vai and Satriani are 5x as tastey as Yngwie will every be.
fucking hate these twats that say fast players have no emotion....they are better then you get over it. im not a fan of fast playing but just fucking appreciate the technical ability.
@LManTehPwner Speed is obviously an important part of guitar playing, but playing fast during a whole song definitely doesn't put much soul into the music. If you check the most memorable solos they all have slow and fast parts, and that justifies the importance of speed/slow notes. You're playing with your heart when you play slow, and you're playing with your brain when you play fast. I'm not saying that playing fast is a bad thing, but hell, mix things up a little...
Malmsteen plays guitar as if he were a machine and not in a good way. It would be possible to build a robot that could pick the string and hit the fret correctly and it would sound exactly like Malmsteen.
Its not that he doesn't have emotion but just that he represents only one type of emotion, that being intensity. Other guitar players can alternate that intensity with soft, sweet and mellow lines and display more versatility that way. If there is one thing that malmsteen lacks it is versatility.
@Orphen01 You may ask him in person when you see him signing his new album at your local record store.... you 'll just have to wait in line with all those other better-players-than-him!!!
I owned the Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar DVD. I prefer the CD for sound quality, though, due to the better editing and volume control. Malmsteen totally drowned out the orchestra on the DVD. Also, all that time and planning and they couldn't do any better than florescent lighting?
Entertaining musician no-doubt. Get some better camera men and sound/video editors and you'll be set!
Personally, I find Malmsteen boring. But that's just me. Music is very personal and we all get what we need. Out of all this, I prefer Steve Vai. I've listened to a lot of Yngwie's stuff and really, it's hard to listen too after a while. I don't hear much sensitivity, just speed and arpegio's. Hey, that's just me. If you like what you like, who else matters? Cheers, Bro's
Yngwie gets WAY too much crap! the fact of the matter is that he takes classical music and makes it his own! for most people, they would turn to rock or blues to express creativity, but not very many people dare to get creative with classical music! He's an amazing technical player, he has plenty of emotion, and he is just an all around amazing musician! if you don't like him, that's fine, but you should at least respect him!
meh, to me, that's all good, but i fail to see the emotion in just blazing through a thousand notes at once. it totally ignores the emotional part of classical music, such as the melodic piano parts that chopin was able to compose. also, you say that people always dabble in blues and rock, then why dont people dabble in jazz? jazz combines technical, emotional, improvisation and technique to make a truly awesome genre of music

whatever im get alot of thumbs down but i dnt care,i find malmstein style just boring.ofcourse this is my opinion and this is what i feel.hes a good player n all but just cant seem to get into his playing if that offends some of u so be it
I hate when people say Yngwie has no emotion...By definition: (An emotion is a mental and physiological state associated with a wide variety of feelings, thoughts, and behavior. Emotions are subjective experiences, or experienced from an individual point of view.) That means its what he feels. Personally if you heard any of the Baroque/Renaissance/Classical music that Yngwie plays you'd say that its stale and lipid, so I think Yngwie does a pretty good job of adding emotion to his expriences.
Yngwie is one of the most emotional guitar players around, just that not many people identify with Classical music and instead look to Rock or Blues kind of feel for that. I mean, a lot of Classical playing is very fast with a lot of notes in it, where as Blues is mostly the opposite. It's really a shame, because his chops and sound are unmatched, IMO. He certainly does not deserve the criticism, because if that's the case then we should blame pretty much every Classical musician.
@RaynosaStudios People who say things like that, don't like classical music and/or are so musically stupid, they don't understand that music cannot be made without emotion.
@RaynosaStudios When I was in Korea back in the days, I thought anyone who said such have no taste at all, but then after I moved to US, I realized Yngwie doesn't appeal to Westerners as much as Asians. Ynggiw is still a God to Asians. I guess its just different style appeals to different people. To me, Yngwie's music is the most emotional and intelligent.
I would love to be able to play like any of these guys. I like Gilbert a bit better than these guys, but they are all good. Check out Bob Zabek. He does a original called Walk On Water that is kick ass.
Why does every person who loves a guitar player that cant play as fast as Yngwie start to attack yngwie with idiotic stuff like he has no soul in his playing or he plays the same thing all over again ( dragonforce ) he doesn´t! if he did he wouldn´t be the guitarist he is today would he? thats right he is better than your favorite guitarists at what he does best maybe they know stuff that yngwie doen´t know how to play just saying all guitarists are good at different things.
generally I agree with you, but I can't agree with that Yngwie's style is "unique" cause it's as unique as all neo-classical shreders and other classical composers BUT I do love him too:) I do love Those 3 you mention:)
The song satch plays is Midnight from his album Surfing with the alien, just thought i'd write that cuz i didn' see anyone post it :) I can't compare these guys in greatness, they are my three favourite guitarists and have influenced me in my guitar playing quite a bit. I like Satch's style the best, but i'm not even gonna touch comparing them in skill, they are all amazing. Also, what's the song Steve plays? is it original or off one of his albums?
In my opinion Vai is just dull - playing notes up and down the fret with no emotion. Yes, Yngwie is overdoing it, but at least he plays some good musik between all those extra notes he's putting in.

i bet your a cool guy and all buy sir or mam you are musically dumb because vai has more emotion than malmsteen in all his playing you should listen to him more often and you'll here mlmsteen literally plays the same thing all the time dont get me wrong i like him but his music has no emotion just all shred vai is brilliant if you ask me yngwies very good at covering classical artists but his musics all the same no emotion
Everyone is entitled to an opinion. You don't have to bash people for not sharing your taste. I just find Yngwie's music more appealing. For example, No Parole from Rock'N'Roll (with Yngwie) is a great album by Alcatrazz. Disturbing the peace (with Vai) is completely uninteresting. Slip of the Tounge is probably the only Whitesnake album I never listen to, etc. If you like Vai, fine. Buy his albums and listen to him playing. I don't.
What Malmsteen is playing is his "Trilogy Opus Suite" from his Trilogy release. It's originally done with drums and bass but the orchestra is a nice touch.
the drummer looks like Pat from Mr Big (maybe it is), Billy Sheehan yay! the virtuoso bass player from mr big :D I miss seeing him with Paul Gilbert But Vai really is AMAZHING!
Damn I hate Malmsteen even more now after having watched the whole video and seeing how he uses a fucking whole symphonic orchestra to play uter shit, seriously.
Don't get me wrong, malmsteen can play, and he has some nice licks and what not.... but watching him do nothing but shred as fast as he can over a beautiful orchestra which happens to be showing some progression, etc (Some signs of emotionally touching music) for 4 minutes is just vomit inducing. Technically mind boggling, yes, but good music... not so much. sorry malmsteen
They all sounded great, very inspiring and well played, some of the world's best, I will continue to reference this video for ideas to incorporate into my playing.

I don't.

Steve Vai is better..
Malmsteen doesnt have any emotion..music is about transmiting feelings..
You just havent heard Vai's "For the love of God" and "Tender Surrender"
then u will understand..

and you fucking think Vai has it.

What Malmsteen is playing is his "Trilogy Opus Suite" from his Trilogy release. It's originally done with drums and bass but the orchestra is a nice touch.

Billy and Steve actually played together long before Shehan was ever with Mr. Big. David Lee Roth anyone?

the drummer looks like Pat from Mr Big (maybe it is), Billy Sheehan yay! the virtuoso bass player from mr big :D I miss seeing him with Paul Gilbert But Vai really is AMAZHING!

Hey Steve, is it a boogie? ;-)
Great inspiration from Satch.
Why Malmsteen is hated or loved !
Is because he's a genius or impostor!?
Only time will tell but it seems it's working for him.His symphonic masterpiece is just incredible!
Those guys are part of the very best because they created their own world of music and others can just (sadly) try to imitate them.

Damn I hate Malmsteen even more now after having watched the whole video and seeing how he uses a fucking whole symphonic orchestra to play uter shit, seriously.
Beaudereck 2 years ago

if no then you shouldnt be giving he crap if yes then go ahead give him crap

Don't get me wrong, malmsteen can play, and he has some nice licks and what not.... but watching him do nothing but shred as fast as he can over a beautiful orchestra which happens to be showing some progression, etc (Some signs of emotionally touching music) for 4 minutes is just vomit inducing. Technically mind boggling, yes, but good music... not so much. sorry malmsteen
