This man was a good friend of my great grandfather, who died 3 days before this show went on because of a car crash :( Sad but it's really cool my relatives found this
I'm pretty sure this guy is my cousin.. or so what my grandpa told me, Carl Copas. Carl's mom and dad, Anna and Delmis, didn't like Lloyd's music about drinking and such so I have little information about Cowboy Copas.
John Roger Simon wrote a very interesting book on Cowboy Copas and Patsy Cline. The title is "Cowboy Copas and the Golden Age of Country Music. It can be purchased on Amazon.com
In 52 or 53 I stood next to Hawkshaw Hawkins once but never talked to him. Was car cruising buddies (my 57 Chevrolet Belair and his 57 Plymouth Fury) with Ricky Nelson in 1957. These two, along with Buddy Holly and the rest, all died in tragic plane crashes, and to this day I wish that they, (Buddy and Patsy especially) had lived a little longer and recorded even more songs for us to remember them by.
cowboy copas was my cousin 5th my grandpa is loyd gilley he is named after him im from rarden ohio the same place he was from my name is nathan hersman
Patsy Cline, Hawkshaw Hawkins & Cowboy Copas were all killed in that plane crash. Wreck'd into the side of a mountain in the fog...........yes the day the country music died........RIP ....
great to see these old clips I have records from way back by these two stars. I just bought the Patsy Cline story From Amazon It's a great little dvd full of great songs. Many thanks for this post.
@teddyboyward ....Also, Hawkshaw Hawkins, another Country Western great....All three died in the same plane that crashed that day......Strange....that years later another group of three would also die in a plane crash...Buddy Holly, Rickie Valens, and The Big Bopper.....very strange and sad....
I think it's cool that distant relatives are interested and proud of Cowboy Copas. I am also a distant relative, 4th cousin, I believe, and I've always wanted to know more about him and my family roots in Adams County. After my grandmother Lola Copas died a long time ago, the family connection was lost.
I don't think there's a recording of Patsy doing this song, although you can get it on CD with Tennessee Ernie Ford singing it. I've looked all over, and that's the only one I've been able to find.
Awesome. I don't think Patsy ever hit a bad note in her life. She also never ever oversang or forced anything in her vocals. Truly the best. You get a glimpse of the Patsy "growl" at 0.51 in this video. Love it!
Hi my name is Mary Jane Copas this guy is my 5th cousin and no he didn't die when he was 57 and no he wasn't born in Tennesse or Kentucky he was born in Adams County Ohio and died in a plane crash when he was in his late 40's. No one on he is related to him if you really are I will quiz u
my name is Brandan Copas my family is from Adams county Ohio but my grandparents moved to washington court house ohio i am related to him. i really dont know much about the copas family my grandma is from blue creek, links area.... we should talk !
I really dont see the need in gettin all worked up over it either. especially if your a "5th cousin". Come on. To be perfectly honest almost anyone with the name Copas is related Cowboy. 99% of the Copas' in this country came from one family that lived in the Shenandoah Valley in the 1700's. Even the ones who spell their namesdifferently such as Copass, Copus, etc.
I never expected to see them perform together! We all know they died together in the plane crash, but to me he was a name alongside hers in the stories I'd read. This treasure gives me an opportunity to see the man and realize he was a musician in his own right!! Thanks for posting this very much!!!
Back in the 50s, a Henry Copas and his family lived in my community. He claimed to be Cowboy's brother, but some people didn't believe him. Was he? He was killed in a car accident November 1957 (we could see it from our house) and the family moved away.
I'm old enough to remember this song when it was new. I enjoyed it then, and I still do.
Cowboy Copas' remaining son passed this week at the age of 57. Mike was a musician as well and obtained the copywrites to nearly all of his father's songbook. It is really cool to see so much of Mike in his dad when I view these videos.....the sense of humor comes through clearly.
Cowboy Copas was my papa's brother. I remember my papa telling me a few stories about him. He was devastatded when that plane crashed. It's neat to watch these videos... I never knew him of course... these viedos give life to the stories that my papa and dad have told me. I've always wonder if Copas is a hispanic name...it means "wine glasses" in Spanish. I hate my last name because of that! People always pronounce it with a spanish accent.
Oh my gosh...This is some crazy stuff! My step Dad...(Chris Copas) Were related too! Get back with me if ya know my paps!!! This is awsome...You a Copas too???? :)
I don't think Copas is Spanish. My understanding is that it's Hungarian transposed through France, England, and Appalachia -- Kopacz or some such being Hungarian for "bald-headed man." My grandfather was one of Cowboy's half-brothers from a previous marriage.
I have never heard or seen Cowboy Copas perform, and I almost started crying, knowing what happened to them and their horrible deaths. I think I might cry anyway, he was so cute. And that was a cute song. It reminds me of the Andy Griffith show when the Darlings would come into town and sing songs. Ha ha. Cute song. Thanks for putting this up for all of us who have NEVER seen Cowboy Copas perform.
My mother left me two photos my dad took of him and his band and her hanging out the window of their car, they were friends of Cowboy and his family. I always wondered what a collector would offer for them. They knew a bunch of the oldtime stars; Red Garrett, Hank Williams and Minnie Pearl among others. Great folks and good music.
A cute song here by Cope and Patsy. I've always loved Cowboy Copas. His song "Signed Sealed and Delivered" is a classic and the first song I ever heard by him. I remember when he and his daughter Kathy did a duet "You're Just a Copycat" - the word copycat became a household word with my family. It was sad when all the celebrities died in the plane crash. Kathy was married to Randy Hughes, the pilot of the doomed plane. Thanks. - Paula
Fabulous early Patsy indeed! Thanks for this wonderful post!

Labaron,
Valens, Holly, and the Big Bopper died in 1959. Cline, Coppas, and Hawkins died in 1963. Valuable were these to their respective genres!

I agree with you Micro but, and I don't mean to diminish Ms. Cline's talent, she did have quite a body!

this was the time when singers actually attracted people with their voice...not with their bodies like today...
