Some regard Billy Kyle's playing as "simplistic" and without surprises. I've tried to play a few of his round, swinging lines and failed miserably. "Modern" jazz musicians should sometimes try and play like the old swingers, then they know what these guys achieved.
Wow - Big Sid's drumming - can tell it's him a mile away! Fast and easy on the brushes, just slightly ahead of the beat, inspiring the band members to keep up. He could drive a big band on the New York telephone book.
There`s some doubt concerning the alto. Procope should have left for Ellington by this time, but so should Shavers (for T. Dorsey). But Shavers is here and the sax player most definitely plays Procope`s style, not Holmes`. Kyle should not be present here, either, acc. to most historic data. So what`s happened? Could the old Kirby band have temporarily been re-united for this movie?
One fact should be corrected, Walter Page allready was bass playing bandleader in 1929, the Original Blue Devils of Walter Page. They made one record (Two tracks) and then the band got raided by Bennie Moten. So Count Basie and Jimmy Rushing left. But a lot of early Basie influences come from that band, the Blue devils.
Why don't jazz bands play like this anymore? I'm not just talking about the music - I'm talking about the joy and interaction and movement. If jazz clubs had bands with this kind of energy, I'd go out more often!

Also, Thelma Terry played a mean upright. Leading her band in 1928.

There are some that do! Look out for them, and make sure to get out there and support your local musicians that inspire you!

"Why don't jazz bands play like this anymore?"
Because jazz is "important" now.

Beautiful!
The alto sax is played by the wonderful Charlie Holmes, star in Luis Russell's orchestra.

Wonderful. I love the way you inserted the graphics until the band actually appears in the film. They "sure can play" !
A plus is the informative notes.
