  • This cover by Immortal just shows the immense respect that all the black metal bands have for Mayhem.

  • Immortal is better musically than any other black metal band. I think what sets them apart from every other is that they are only a 3-piece band while still pushing out the best songs black metal has to offer.

  • \m/ \m/

  • The best black metal band ever covering one of the best songs of the genre's primary instigators.

  • este es un gran cover de mayhem no como la maricada de gorgoroth

  • awesome cover immortal rules

  • Mmmmm great cover! Immortal, you fucking rule. And old school Mayhem is just ... AMAZING. Hail muthafuckin' metal!!

  • @hellfencer

Yeah man, old school mayhem rules, r.i.p euro and dead

  • THUMBS UP IF GLEE BROUGHT YOU HERE!!!

  • @pewpbubblez ummm.. what?

  • I wonder how many crab walks abbath was doing during this recording

  • Immortal should have covered "Life Eternal". lol This is still a great cover

  • this is bad satanictic music

  • @LadyMagdalenaAnna Bad satanic is a conflicting statement.

  • @LadyMagdalenaAnna aww its soooo evil boohoo T.T

  • @LadyMagdalenaAnna "Satanictic" I'm afraid, this is the first time I have stumbled upon such a word, Although it does sound wittingly uncanny.

  • @LadyMagdalenaAnna Failictic

  • why are the vocals that faint and quiet? :/ they're sooooo awesome, but the audio-mixing's so strange.

  • @CelticDarkFFortress2 i completely agree with you. no other black metal band plays such a high level as immortal does, emperor is partially close but immortal are fucking gods, best black metal band ever.

abbath is the essence of black metal, especially his voice.

  • @D0cMabuse For my band's newest, blackest song, I am using Abbath-esque vocals because of how dark and evil it is! Man, this is a great cover! IMMORTAL MAYHEM!!

  • @hellfencer do you have an upload on youtube?

i really would like to check it out.

    mail me or whatever...

  • @D0cMabuse We would have had a recording done back in March of this year, but the studio guy was an asshat and couldn't boot up his machines (>_<)... And then our drummer died of overdose about a month later. So we had to retrain a drummer and we now have a second guitarist. I think we are back on track to recording our new black metal songs. We have one of our albums up on here though, Ice Fields of Hyperion (as well as two music videos). My band is Necrodemon. Cheers!

  • @D0cMabuse

I disagree there. Emperor is definitely more musically complex, their songs are (even?) more cleverly thought out, they are technically more proficient (especially the fact that Ihsahn is a vastly superior lead-guitarist). Ihsahn's shrieks (or whatever you'd call it) are just as good or even better, and next to that he can sing clean as well.

Just check out Anthems or their last album. They are the best black metal band if you ask me.

  • don't be so sure. The key characteristic of black metal originally was it's rough sound. But pretty much all the bands except Darkthrone cleaned their sound up a little bit. This song came out right at the end of the second movement when things were rough sounding. therefore I believe they purposely made it sound rough to emulate that sound of the time. One of the best song covers i have ever heard though!

  • I guess this was recorded when Damned in Black (album), because Abbath's voice is the same there and here.

  • im suprised the world didnt fall out of orbit when this cover was made. this is siccccccccccccccccccccccccc!!!!!!!!!!

  • Bloody hell, this cover is mightily impressive.

  • azrael, Mayhems sound was basically Death Metal up to around 90/91. Pretty much all their songs before that were just Death Metal with some extra "darkness" and shrieked vocals for a unique sound.

  • Are you retarded? Mayhem death metal? Damn you are stupid.

  • Did I say Mayhem were Death Metal? No, I said "Mayhem's sound" was basically Death Metal with a different and unique sound, until they came up with the material which they used for DMDS which was 90/91.

Listen to Chainsaw Gutsfuck... then listen to Pagan Fears, you will hear a huge difference.

  • actcually they were death metal before

  • Calm the fuck down man, not everyone can immediately distinguish Death Metal from Black Metal. Yes they are very different but a lot of people don't know, Chinese-Japanese.

  • ok you guys are retarded euronymous hated the death metal scene cause it was turning into nothing but posers,he wanted something darker more evil to express his hatred for the norway church.and convinced bands like immortal, emporer to play black metal to start a new genre of music.

  • @christslayer666 That's propably just because he couldn't play their songs and didn't know how to tune downXD

  • @varulv234 thats a horrible excuse.he liked death metal but it was like varg said we wanted to show their was another way to play extreme music.and tune down isnt hard.

  • It was a joke. But Death Metal is/was often more technically prominent than Black Metal.

  • @varulv234 yeah but black metal was nvr ment to be technical.simple is better but i like some black metal that trys to be technical just a bit but true to its roots

  • I know, i was just stating the fact.

  • ahhh .. again the figh between trve and untrve .. metal is for everyone and is therefore individual, anyone who seperates people or bands into trve or untrve are acting against the philosophy of metal and are therefore untrve ... see the paradox situation ?

so let them be and dont try to seperate between trve and untrve ... in Euronymous's case it lead to his death, because he wasnt black metal enough for a maniac ... would you kill an artist because he wasnt committed ?

    I dont think so ...

  • you're confuzing the philosophy from black metal with other metal

  • ..../rolls eyes

no offense to the youth... but my god you guys are getting hung up on some petty shit. Whether E. was gay, tough, a poser, whatever..... he was absolutely pivotal in launching *modern* black metal...... where he came from simply does not matter

  • amazing immortal the best band de mysteriis dom sathanas the best black metal album

  • Fuck Euronymous. He was the biggest poser in the scene and all the people that looked up to him were youths. One great band paying their respects to another by covering a great song. Hail Mayhem Hail Immortal FUCK Euronymous. Alt For Norge

  • how was he a poser

  • Euronymous never really did anything. He hung out with people younger than him so they would look up to him. He was a straight A student and he was BLONDE. I'm not saying being blonde is a bad this but yeah. He was respectful to his parents and he didn't drink or do drugs. He could only act tough when Hellhammer and Necrobutcher weren't around because they knew who he really was. I shouldn't have said fuck Euronymous cuz he's a pivetal figure in black metal my bad.

  • were did you aquire this knowledge? i respect my dad but not my whore of a mother and i dont do drugs but i get wasted all the time.i think saying fuck euronymous is like saying fuck immortal, celtic frost, mayhem, venom

  • I don't want to turn anything into a personal matter so lets keep our lifestyles to ourselves. I acquired the knowledge from here on youtube. No, not from people posting comments, but from interviews with Messiah and Necrobutcher. I know saying fuck euronymous was kind of stupid, which is why I retracted my statement in my previous post. I would never say fuck Abbath, Tom Warrior or fuck Cronos so I should be saying fuck Euronymous.

  • so I should not* be saying. typo my bad

  • Euronymous did nothing.... hmmm he only created the Norwegian sound that EVERY band copied... Emperor included.....

  • @azrael666ethereal

Actually, Emperor is far closer to Bathory than Mayhem.

  • Actually yeah you are right BUT all the members of Emperor were playing Death Metal before they came into contact with Euronymous.... I doubt they would admit that but it's true.....

  • @azrael666ethereal

They did admit it. However, you're talking about a time when Black/Death/Speed/Power Metal were all the same thing. They were just the different names attributed to "Extreme Metal" as a whole. Helvete was a Death Metal shop, according to Euronymous, but what they sold is what we would call Black Metal.

  • I'm talking about a time when Emperor was called Thou Shalt Suffer. Listen to their 1991 demo's "Into The Woods Of Belial" and "Open The Mysteries Of Your Creation", it's clearly Death Metal with some keyboards... They came into contact with Euronymous, changed their sound drastically and finally changed the neame of the band....... Mayhem have been playing BM since 1987 even though they formed in '84 playing covers....

  • @azrael666ethereal

No, Mayhem played Death Metal - they themselves said this. In fact, they called it Death Metal until '92/'93.

You're not understanding what I'm talking about - Black/Death/Speed/Power were different names for the same music, back then.

I have both Thou Shalt Suffer demos, and there are clear influences from bands as diverse as Bathory and Mercyful Fate, there.

Finally: Emperor formed in '91, but met Euronymous in '93. Emperor's '92 demos are, basically, Bathory.

  • Mayhem have NEVER been a Death Metal band!!! They were influenced by Venom, who were speed metal but Euronymous was taken by the phrase Black Metal Venom coined.. If you have read any early Mayhem interviews you know that they hated Death Metal... Death to Trends and all that.. The first Mayhem demo P.F.A. is clearly Black Metal...

I also have both T.S.S. demos also and hear a distict death metal sound, grunty vocals and all, nothing like the Emperor sound albeit a few little things..

  • @azrael666ethereal

Again, you're missing the point. This isn't my opinion, this is simple fact: the terms "Death" and "Black" Metal were interchangeable until the late '80s, when the distinction started to be made. Morbid Angel play Death Metal, but they called "Altars of Madness" Black Metal.

You have evidently not listened to Thou Shalt Suffer if you can't tell that it is Emperor done in a "trendy" style. The composition is identical for both; only the execution differs.

  • I can assure you that i have ben listening to the TSS demo's sine '96.. Sounds very little like Emperor to me for the most part with little hints of what was to come...

Where do you get your info from??? Altars of Madness is a death metal classic...

Actually BM in the 80s didn't really exist as we percieve it now... Bathory were considered a thrash band at the time....

  • If you take out the time changes and change a couple of notes to remove the "atonality", then most of the "Into the Woods of Belial" demo is Emperor, with some copycat "Death Metal" thrown in. The spirit is Black Metal, regardless.

Bathory were considered pioneers of Black Metal, Thrash, and Death Metal, depending on whose interview you're listening to, or which zine you're reading.

My info re Altars of Madness comes from Azagthoth, who claimed inspiration from Black Metal.

  • I agree there are some parts which are BM with the demo's, but those passages are very fleeting.. Most of the guitar work is chunky like the typical death metal style and the vocals, well... haha.. TSS were know as a Death Metal band regardless.

I love Bathory and I do see them as the innovators of the true Black Metal sound... I would say Metallica were the real pioneers of Thrash metal though...

  • If it wasn't for Euronymous Norwegian Black Metal never would have happened....

  • this cover is awesome immortal and mayhem 4 life!

  • Oh damn one guitar is missing :(. the bass makes up for it ten fold

  • Comment removed

  • Mayhem isn't even worth Immortal's shit...Mayhem should play a cover for the Legendary Gods of Norway ie Immortal.

  • without mayhem you probably wouldn't have immortal

  • "Euronymous of Mayhem (Nor) is credited for getting Immortal into the Black Metal Scene. "

    From Metal Archives.

  • Euronymous turned ALL the extreme bands onto Black Metal... Immortal, Darkthrone and Emperor were all Death Metal when they started out....

  • all respect!

  • This is a decent cover, but Gorgoroth's cover of Life Eternal is the best in my opinion.

  • better than the original from the dark past

  • ouww, thats a good cover

  • Good cover. Not surprising since it's Immortal who covered it. They always bring quality to the table.

  • America has had a ton of great metal bands. Quit being a dumbass.

  • great version men! its just dark and blaaaaack!!!

  • thx alot for this SONg !! oué oué oué!

  • hail Immortal

  • Hellhammer has never recorded for Immortal. He appeared in the Grim and Frostbitten Kingdoms music video, but did NOT play the drums. He was simply on the video. Abbath did the drumming. The only real drumming he's ever done for Immortal is from their '95 Battles tour.

Horgh is a fine drummer, one of the better ones in black metal, much better than the overrated Frost, and his dickless Satyricon buddies.

    Hail the grim Immortal!

  • Horgh is a great drummer but better than Frost???? Thats debatable... i doubt it...

  • Horgh has played (I think he still does?) with Hypocrisy too, he's really great.

  • Great cover 5 stars ; )

  • if you dont know, that drummer is horgh from immortal and he also played in hypocrisy earlier

  • You don't have to be drummer, I can hear the difference between Horgh and Hellhammer myself, and i'm a guitarist. It's definetelly Horgh !

  • hellhammer has played for immortal, and i find it a bit hard to hear who is hitting a drum lol!

  • i wouldnt be suprised if hellhammer is playing drums here

  • very very nice cover, well the whole album

  • is it youtube or this sounds a bit bad recorded?

  • Your new to Black Metal.

    Fuck Off!

  • you fuck off!!! I don't have the album, so I didn't knew how it sounded. that's no reason to be an asshole. and i'm not fan of cover compilations since the originals are always waaay better!!! as for that shitty line "your new to black metal", i don't follow a trend: to be new or old or whatever. i've been listening black metal for about 5 years, but it's not my only listenable type of music

  • So listening to Black Metal for five years and your new to the not so good sound quality? Of course the originals are better! I don't remember saying you should only listen to Black Metal.New or Old has nothing to do with a trend. You are an idiot!

  • i'm pretty much used to pour sound quality (bootlegs, gigs, demos). I just asked if it is from youtube or it was the way it was recorded. I never said anything like beeing not used. no complain. i exagerated a it about that trend shit, but you also have preconceptions about things you don't know (e.g. persons)

  • Big fucking deal.

We don't live in an understanding world, where everyone is equal and non- judgemental. Get over it.

  • you have serious issues or you just try to look tough?

  • i guess all you need is atention that's why you always try to answer my replies all the time. i petty you.

  • Hypocrite.

  • Psh both of you suck, it doesnt matter how long you listened to Bm. But i've listened to it since elementry school. so fuck you all! but really doesnt matter if anyone is "new" or unfimiliar their bm fan either way. we should fight true enemies here guys... SLIPKNOT FANS!!! HARDCORE SUPER XXX HARDCORE BAND GUYS

  • Yeah....

  • Well, true. It's not really very important how long are in BM, but you have to admit, that people who are new say crap about BM much more often that "veterans", cause they know shit and want to know everything

  • Well, ya'kno what linking park fan178 , Fuck you. I can already tell your a sad trendy Fucker, haha look at your fuckng name lpfan178, i sugest you get a new name before you get made fun of more you miserable fucker I can agree with you that slipknot sucks dick and so what youve been listening to BM since elementary well i have since grade 7 and you dont see me bragging about it except for now because im trying to prove a point.

  • Actually means LiopleurodonsFantasy, was a clan and 178 is my tag number. rofl i dont even rember talk trash on here but it seems i have. by telling how you jump to conclutions and how terrible your grammer is, Im not going to waste my time either.

  • Immortal as a whole are actually more talented than Mayhem is and this song actually sounds as good if not better than the original. Abbath even tailored his voice properly to sound a slight bit "Attila-ish." lol

  • How can it be better than the original? That would be impossible. Better is a matter of opinion. But think about it....

  • Glen Benton will kill you for such blasphemy. Also If Sun is good enough to get Atilla's respect then they have mine.

  • Ah you gotta love IMMORTAL! Abbath is great! rubengrappig, you have a good point but I think Immortal just wanted to pay tribute in honor of one of the truest black metal bands of the second wave that inspired their band a lot, while remaning true to their own trademark sound.

  • This version is worthy of The True Mayhem!

  • i love the immortal sound, but this just doesn't fit the song. Immortal is a fucking great band but their guitar sound just doesn't fit the mayhem atmosphere and abbath's voice doens't really sounds like atilla or dead, so i can respect their cover but i prefer mayhem's version. Hail black metal!

  • What it lacks in atmosphere it makes up for in violence. I like the drum in this cover.

  • This lacks the atmosphere that the original has. And that, for me, is the most important. This brings me to the conclusion that the original is a lot better.

  • Hmmm, very good song indeed!

The blast beats are excellent and the bass is better here than in the original version by MayheM....but the guitars from that version are better.

  • Cannot compare mayhem to immortal the tow bands is perfect , but the immortal s sounds just a lil better :P mayhem is a fucking good black metal band 2 !!

  • Mayhem is a good band, but compareing to immortal they are just rubbish

  • hmm strange that a Slipknot fan would say something like that seeing as they have the most over-rated drummer in history and their vocalist sounds like an obese American taking a shit.

  • if you're going to go around saying things just to piss people off like a little junior high prick at least make sure they're legitimate statements and stop making a fool of yourself.

  • that's all you got? A fucking smiley face? Keep your bullshit and your IM jargon to you and all your 13 year old friends.

  • It was better than anything you could ever think of. :)

  • P.S. im just fuckin with you, calme down, its youtube lol I dont hate Black Metal, but i do make fun of it for fun sometimes.

    :)!!!

  • I'm sorry folks but I am an obese American and that mental image is funny as fuck.

  • hahaha the first image that comes to mind when I hear Slipknot is a red faced fat guy sitting in the stall in a public WC straining to releive his bowels.

  • whoa Immortal shouldof been the ones to create the song lolz awesome cover

  • aguante Immortal desde argentina!!

  • I like the original better because they have more that feeling you know. Immortal has always been about war and nature, while Mayhem focused alot on death (which this song is about), and this song, written perfectly by Pelle is best intepreted By Atilla.

However, pretty much like Diabolis I say, this version IS pretty awesome, and Immortal (as usual) do not disappoint.

  • mayhem's original vaersion is wAY better than this! other than that i still love immortal \m/

  • this is a good cover...but its immortal so it wouldnt be shit anyway

  • I prefer this version, but original is good!

  • Awesome, but I still like the original better.
