This isn't new for China. Aristocratic ladies in china's past would carry umbrellas in the sun to prevent their skin from darkening. They did the same thing in europe.
Dark skin is traditionally seen as a sign of being low class. You have to work outside in the fields and therefore you're dark skinned. If you're wealthy you can stay inside all day, and are thus lighter.
The odd thing is that it has been flipped in europe and america. White people now want darker skin curiously enough
the beauty standard in most of the asian countries is to have fair/white skin... i think its sad, because asian women look so stunning without all this whitening.. you should be proud of what you have!
Whitening/Bleaching skin is now the big thing across the world. EVEN Black woman. Its horrible and Dangerous! I'm white, born white, ben white all my life. AND I REALLY WISH I COULD TAN! lol.
Yeah, I've seen the whitening/bleach creams on plenty of store shelves in the sections close to black hair products. I personally would never bleach my skin, but I do know that that happens a lot in America. Sorry about the tanning part lol! :)

people want what they don't have
hence all the spray tans or self tanners in the west, i call that a set back too... imagine having semi permanent makeup all over your body 24/7
Ugh gross...
