It is most likely that a chicken arrived 1st. I am a biology major and imo what probably happened was that 2 non-chickens mated and the DNA in their new zygote contained the mutation(s) that produced the 1st true chicken. Prior to that first true chicken zygote, there were only non-chickens.

My answer: It depends what definition you use of "egg". If it is any egg, then, of course, the egg comes first. However, I'd say it means "chicken egg", and by my definition, "chicken egg" means "egg laid by chicken", no "egg that hatches a chicken". So, an animal very like a chicken but not quite a chicken would have laid an egg, not a chicken egg. The bird that hatches from the egg would be genetically mutated so much so that it is what we would call a chicken. So, the chicken came first.
