I think these skits are a parody of "The Little Match Girl" by Hans Christian Andersen. The match girl is sent out into the snow by her father to sell matches. She is afraid to go home with no money, so she says out in the cold and burns the matches one by one to stay warm. As she burns them, she has visions of wonderfully comforting things like warm homes and feasts. In the end, as she burns her last match, she sees her deceased grandmother, who caries her soul away. Sad.
