i doubt it would have seemed very japanese if the waiter had spoken in perfect english with a british accent.
why is it racist for a person to speak a language foreign to them without perfect grammar? most people who can speak another language don't usually master the grammar.
not all stereotypes are racist, there are good and bad stereotypes about people. this ad shows a woman speaking in broken english because like most japanese english is not her first language.
do you find it racist that a japanese woman works in a japanese restaurant? is that a racist stereotype?
not all irish men speak with an irish accent - do you go around to those videos on youtube and say "its racist stereotyping the irish like that"
That's apples to oranges. An Irish accent is different than broken English. Stereotypes based on ethnicity are always racist. Why are you defending this racist commercial so much? Do you work for budweiser or something!?
there is nothing racist about someone speaking broken english - most japanese people can only speak broken english. why is it racist to assume that someone speaking a foreign language does not speak it as well as their native tongue? ive seen dozens of movies where english speakers try to speak another language and their are comedic moments where he says completely the wrong thing. is that racist too?
quite frankly i don't a single japanese friend of mine who would find it offensive.
You're from Australia and people are more relaxed on racism and stereotypes there than people are in America. Painting a picture of a Japanese person not having the ability to speak proper English is racist and demeaning. The broken English is not used as a joke as in an error due to a translational blunder etc., it's just blatant racial stereotyping. I've lived in Japan many years and this kind of stereotyping is found offensive.
yes i have noticed that americans tend to take every single tiny thing that might be constrewn as racist ulta seriously. that is too extreme and you're basically making race an issue while it should be a none issue.
tell me, if it was a russian or a french man in that commercial speaking broken english would that have been racist?
I don't know why you think broken English is the same as an accent, it's not. From my perspective you don't take racism seriously enough but it's because you don't deal with racism the way Americans have to because you're culture is different but this commercial is for the American market not the Australian market.
because you seem to automatically associate someone not speaking english well with racism. so that makes me wonder whether its only racist when a japanese person cannot speak perfect english. you didn't answer me when i asked if its racist for a french or italian not to speak english perfectly.
and if you have been to japan you would know that the majority of the population cannot speak english perfectly and out in the country you'll be hard pressed to find people who can speak english at all.
do you think its racist that a japanese woman has a japanese accent?
no i dont work for budweiser, i just get annoyed when people call things racist which are obviously not. the reason this annoys me is because it demeans the term racism - by associating trivial things with it you make racism appear to be trivial. so while you may think you're somehow raising awareness about racism you're having the opposite affect.
There is a HUGE difference between a Japanese accent and broken English. Racial stereotypes are racist and are not trivial. To say that me pointing out racist stereotypes somehow encourages racism is simply asinine.
haha It lay egg now! Enjoy!! xD
