The beginning of the movie is actually the end. Theresa and Charlie have baby and Johnny Boy is there... clearly after the events of the movie. Furthermore, Charlie's search for "redemption" is signified by his attempt to set Johnny Boy straight... he succeeds, but only after injury to himself, signified by his bleeding hand at the end of the car crash... like Jesus... he had to make a sacrifice for Johnny's redemption.
How can any geezer survive gettin' shot in the throat unless that missed the windpipe or something. Oh well Thats what happens you disrespect your creditors.
Always been my favorite movie. Scorsese is the best with his fave actors, and has the best sound track. Yes that is Cream with Clapton on Hideaway at the end, and Eric with Derek and the Dominoes at the beginning with I looked away, a great underrated song from Layla. Marty made some great movies after this, but I think this is the best. He put it all on the screen.
well... he didn't TRY to shoot his wife, he talked about it in the back of the taxi cab for like 5 minutes... Great actor actually, amazing monologue (in Taxi Driver)
I thought he was dead as shit the first time I saw this but in my Film Analysis class it was speculated that the 8mm clips in the opening of the movie take place afterwards and Johnny Boy is in them so...
I find it hard to believe that everyone would just forgive and forget though as Michael is also in the opening.
Exactly, why would Charlie still pally with Michael and Johnny Boy after the end; in the home movies, it seemed to me like they were having the time of their lives as if nothing bad happened before that. Michael tried to kill Johnny at the end and didn't care if it mean't putting Charlie and Theresa in harm's way, so I doubt that Charlie would still like Michael after that. And I'm pretty sure Charlie wouldn't really like Johnny anymore for the fact that he's the cause of the whole mess.
At the very beginning Charlie awakes from what seems a bad dream, goes to the mirror to reflect his dream then lays back on the bed. The home movies start at that point, so I will postulate that after having a bad dream Charlie is daydreaming of that the future he wants. The home movies being a fantasy that he sees to clear away the cobwebs of the bad dream.
Thats what I think because I agree that at the end there is no way they are going patch this up.
i dont think the home videos did take place after the film, i think that the "home videos" at the beginning were just a dream of charlies of how he wants life to be
he didn't die for those who have seen the film the beginning of the film where they show the home movies Charlie and teresa did get an apartment together and had a baby and Johnny boy is in that scene with short hair and smoking a cigarette.
not necessarily (i think not), I'm sure scorsese would say that it's up to you, like all filmmakers like to say....maybe its not about if he lives or dies just the fact that someone tries to kill you!
as long as the bullet doesn't penetrate the spinal cord....it was shot from a crazy angle so it might have gone in and then exited, producing all that blood
The song is called Steppin' Out. The version that appears in this video is performed by Cream (E. Clapton on lead guitar) in concert. You can find it in the 1972 Live Cream Vol II cd.
John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (not bluesbusters lol!) did also a cover of this song (also featuring Clapton on guitar) back in the sixties, but its not this version.
Was that Martin Scorcese doing a cameo as a hitman?? He had a tendency of doing cameos in a few of his films; in "Taxi Driver", he cameoed as one of DeNiro's fares, talking about how he was going to kill the guy who was doing his wife etc.,etc. It looks like a young Scorcese playing the hitman...anyone???
That character in "Taxi Driver" was supposed to be played by George Memoli who was Charlie's cousin in the bar fight scene ("This guy is a fxxxxx mook")
makes sense...Scorsese is the one who narrarates the very beginning of the film "you pay for your sins in the street", so I guess Johnny was paying for his??
Fact:
Johnny Boy DID NOT DIE!
Proof:
The beginning of the movie is actually the end. Theresa and Charlie have baby and Johnny Boy is there... clearly after the events of the movie. Furthermore, Charlie's search for "redemption" is signified by his attempt to set Johnny Boy straight... he succeeds, but only after injury to himself, signified by his bleeding hand at the end of the car crash... like Jesus... he had to make a sacrifice for Johnny's redemption.

It's a superb movie, but would Johnny Boy have been able to walk around like that with a bullet in his neck?
JohnKoroly 3 years ago
it's a myth that every goddamn bullet that hits you in your whatsoever puts you down.
there are many cases in which the victims are still able to walk, fight or talk for a certain time, till the blood loss is too high.
of course, the exact opposite exists too.
