It all depends on what your shooting. It has a shock mount so it will not pick up any humming from the camera itself. If your doing an interview indoors and its all quiet besides your subject then its a great choice. You can also buy a Rode mic for it to improve the quality a bit.
We have done a test on the DVCAM and standard DV format and we didn't really notice a difference, you also go through a lot more tape too. For instance, if you but an 83 minute tape and set your camera to DVCAM, you will only get just over 63 minutes from the tape.
Sorry I'm a total newbie. How do you convert the tape to digital format? Do you need to purchase software and additional equipment or can you just connect to computer directly?
Nice shots and editing!!! I'm looking seriously at this camera, but, (and I say this cautiously), it alomst looks a little "soft" on the focus, albiet, you might have used some filters or something. In some ways I like that, but in some instances, I'd like to see more shapness,or "crispness" in the picture. Hmmmmmmm!!!!!!!! I'd like to see some shots of people on a bright sunny day, and see what it looks like. Marc Trainor.
There is no filter on this video, but al the other video's on my account are filmed with the PD170! So you can watch the others if you want to see more different shots.
you can turn up the sharpness in the custom setting. The sharp you are wanting can only be done with a $10,000 fujion lense and a 2/3 chip beta cam. or hd nowdays
Yea, your probably right. I always want to get a $10,000. crispness out of a lesser priced camera. I'm amazed at what we're all getting these days in this "prosumer" 3 to 4 grand camera range, but there must be a reason that the great big film company's and news media, still use the "great big expensive cameras". Thanks for the response. Marc.
The camera rocks!! Already using it for like 4 years and still get the footage I want and need! In bright daylight or in the evening. I have never regret my descission to buy the camera! :)
I love to hear this kind of comment, because your the person who "owns one", not just some "dealer" trying to sell you something. I always like to hear it "from the horses mouth" so to speak, and the low light capability is a major consideration for me, if I ever shoot some more weddings. Thanks for taking the time to give us this info. . Marc.
I totally agree with your comment. I also shoot weddings and I know that there are better cameras as far as image quality, but when I test them out in low light my pd170 kills them all. But if I had a choice, I'd like to try out the new panasonics, awesome quality during the day and I would have to say better then the sony's, sorry to dis the sony but it's true
Wow, that's an interesting comment. I"m not sure if you meant that the new Panasonics were better in "low light" or just better picture quality, in daylight only? Now sure what you meant, but I have an older Panasonic 3 chip that's great in daylight, but sucks in low light. Marc.
No, the Panasonics have better picture quality during the day, but once the light or sun goes down, so does the quality, where the Sony will maintain the quality. Not many cameras have the low light capabilities that the SonyPD170 has.

It records on a DVCAM tape. The format depents on how you capture..
