Try ride a motorcycle with 180hp with this sound on your mp3. This sound is better than Metallica! And much better than Limp biskit, because the guitar is very good. And they keep out of comercial standards.
I totally agree. It took me awhile to really come to appreciate this album. It is different from early stuff of course, but still has some great cuts on it.
Like you, I didn't like much of the Monochrome album at first, but upon further listening, I think it's one of their best efforts in quite awhile. The new drummer (Mike Jost) does good work through out it. Another couple of cuts I really like from the new album are "On Your Way Down" and "Goodbye".
I loved Monochrome from the beginning. I'm not a Helmet fan, I just started listening their music some years ago.
I loved the way everything sounded, and I found that new drummer Mike Jost very skilled, I liked him better than every other drummer that helmet had (except for Stanier of course)
btw, is that guy on the drums Mike Jost? I never saw a video of them live with the Monochrome line-up
Hear me out- Cause I'm on a quest- A mission from god, if you will. Am I the only person who would appreciate a Helmet version of the Barney Miller theme song? Wouldn't that be the coolest cover song ever? Whatever- screw you guys, I don't need your help. Quests are better done alone, and without any kind of moral support even. He's coming through my region in mid-november, I'll ask him then.
It's funny that you say that you don't have to be a virtuoso because Page is a virtuoso. He studied jazz as a kid. You should here some of his session work. It's difficult to find, but it's out there. He doesn't feel the need to show off, which makes him even cooler. I saw him back in March in some shit bar in AZ before they took off to Australia. He had to come out and set up his own gear and everything. I felt really bad for him.
Oh yea, it was a helmet show. The staff from the bar helped him, but he was luggin' amps and pedal boards right there with him. Page came out and had beers and took pictures with everybody after they were done. I had a chance to talk to him a little bit. A real nice guy. The show wasn't that great. But it was worth it just to spend 5 minutes with him. I idolized him as a teenager.
wow man, i wish i could see a gig like that. during the 90´s i played loads of helmet covers w/ my college band, he was/still one of my musical heroes.
hrmmmm...that didnt happen in australia...he has his own guitar tech (some black dude) and page didnt touch any of his gear...and there was some nerdy roady dude who set up all his pedal boards and stuff...
I was just thinking the same thing--Page is a virtuoso. It's my understanding that he has a Masters Degree in jazz guitar theory from Juliard(spelling?)
Maybe it's just me, but those crushing, haunting chords that quickly became Helmet's trademark sound even better in "Drop-D" tuning tuned down an additional step (low to high: C G C F A D), which they've been using since they did the smart thing and got back together. Either way, isn't the time about right for a live album from Mr. Hamilton & Co.?
I know was in C# and there were a few B-sides in that tuning around that era, so page had been writing in C and C# drop tunings a decade before "size matters" came out
I don't see how anybody can write such kick ass riffs
