  • Playing around with the recording again. A very wierd b flat

  • What a great performance...I do not understand all the negativity. He hits the money notes and sings the aria well with true understanding. Awesome performance.

  • Thanks for this Operalala, it is great. I just bought his Gioconda recording on which he is over 60, I guess.

  • opera queens are the worst of bitches!

  • Sounds pretty awesome to me! What a great tenor and career.

  • Impresionante!! Bravisimo Placido!!

  • Berrea, que algo queda.

  • This was a live broadcast. And none of the notes as sung have taken away from anyone's enjoyment of this aria.

  • @Operalala I can't stand people that only critisize small details. Opera is not about perfect tecnich it also requires a huge amount of feelings, and in thar field my friends Domingo is outstanding. Bravo Placido!

  • WHAT'S WRONG WITH THEM!! gosh some people are hard to please! I wish i could sing like him, flaws and all!

  • have you heard CIELO E MAR OF JUSSI BJORLING? LISTEN & COMPARE

  • nice sound and always great phrasing. what can you say? he's always prepared. wish the top would open up but he never trusts that it will happen if he lets it go. he's never been a baritone and he never had the chance to finish learning how to free the top. but damn, he survived that deficiency and has carved out a fabulous career! pav's version is sung on the breath at all times and the times he pushes he doesn't need too

  • You are wrong when you say that he has never been a baritone. Placido started his career as a baritrone. He is what is called a pushed up baritone. not a true tenor voice that is why he has such difficulty with the high notes.

  • No, he was never a baritone in opera. He began his operatic career at age 19 or 20 with small tenor parts then moved on to tenor leads. He sang quasi-baritone parts in zarzuela (Spanish operetta) as a teenager before completing his vocal training. The voice as heard here is pure tenor and even lyric, not at all baritonal. Compare with Giacomini or Galouzine.

  • I prefer the sound quality of the 'pushed up baritones' which they are not. They are tenors -often a lot more magnificent than light tenors who you may call born tenors -Florez, Brown Lee or even Bjorling as great as he was. Their upper range developed later with lots of effort but often with greater qualilty. Recall del Monaco, Corelli, even Domingo. Their careers as tenors were not as long since their voices were not naturally high but we really care about singers' voices at their prime.

  • You are joking, that Domingo's career is not long. Corelli finished at 60 in good voice. A high tenor also can demage his voice very young.

  • I agree that here Domingo's upper range was not the best. You can tell he was losing the tenor's 'ping' as the aria progressed. He relied very hard on the ping and tried hard to keep his voice light to preserve the upper range in his career. Enzo is not an easy role and this aria comes after significant singing. One can't compare it to a stand-alone aria. I boldly say Domingo truly had the best artistry and the most beautiful voice (if not most exciting) among all tenors - historically!

  • You are totally right, I just said to Samurai9 a few words as a comment on Placido´s first years. Regards.

  • Bravo Plácido!!! El mejor en celo e mar

  • I agree - I really like Domingo's Enzo - so many other singers just plod through Cielo e mar.

  • Hi! operalala I guess it´s just you and me enjoying Placido. Please listen to him in e lucevan le stelle and amor ti vieta. See you there.
