We prefer Phuket..the sea water is much cleaner and the islands are out of this world...we did 5 islands in one day.
The Thai people are also more friendly i think...they go out of their way to please you, and also you are not hounded by street sellers in Phuket, as you are in Bali.
Great hotel near the beach? Look for "Gemini Star", its on the Poppis 2 road. Also recommend you to go diving at Tulamben (Liberty Wreck), one of the fines divesites in the world! Just ask divecentres to take you there for a whole course or just a day of diving. Lots of cheap clothes and other stuffzor at Kuta Square. I spent two weeks in Kuta couple of months ago. :)
Oh by the way. By the road at the bomb memorial there is a restaurant called "Sky garden" or something. They got great meals there and free internet access. Both TP/Wifi.
